Pork Butt (No pulled pork, BBQ or smoked recipes)

I'm a big fan of Zak Pelaccio's Pork Shoulder With Maple Glaze: http://nymag.com/listings/recipe/pork-shoulder-with-maple/

It has a lot of stuff in it, but the flavors are so complex when it's finished. And the thai chilies give it an amazing kick.

Pulled Pork

Does anyone brine their shoulder before cooking low and slow?

Need top notch Italian where I can get a great steak?

I second Peitros. It's old school super tasty italian and steak.

Lively downtown spot under $50 per person?

What about Hearth? Without drinks, tax and tip I would estimate it's about $50 a person. It's super cozy in the winter. I had a birthday dinner there once with about 8 or 9 people and they were extremely accommodating and they handled it seamlessly.

homemade chilled red beet borscht

Little Poland (2nd and 12th) has a delicious cold borscht with sour cream. It's delicious!

GE Monogram kitchen stuff--any good?

I second complaints on the dishwasher. I have the 18'' W dishwasher. I stopped draining after the 4th time I used it. I need to call the repairman. What a pain.

Any Menus with Soft Shell Crabs?

Had the soft shells w asparagus and ramps today at Union Square Cafe. The ramps were conspicuously missing, but it was a delicious nonetheless. Two meaty nice sized crabs.

Lotus of Siam in NYC

Entrees were in the $26 - $30 range if I remember. We did not drink, were not charged for the appetizer, and it came out to around $63.

Lotus of Siam in NYC

I went tonight for dinner. They were serving their full menu. I went with 1 other person. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entrees. Appetizer: Thai Chicken Wings. Entree 1: Sea bass with drunken noodle. Entree 3: Crispy Duck Penang.

Everything was delicious. Fresh. Well prepared. Service has some hiccups, but I believe that is to be expected this early. I will definitely go back. Note however, that it is not cheap.

Sarge's beats out Katz's

Great borscht at Sarges too.

Should I take my girl out to a Steakhouse on first date? Teens

If what you mean is that you want to be at the bowling ally at 4:30, so then you can have a 1:30/2:00 pm lunch, take your time dining, and then stroll over to leisure time for an early afternoon of bowling, then I suggest Gotham Bar and Grill. It will make you look sophisticated and sexy, yet I think the menu is approachable and that the restaurant will make you feel welcomed there.

I definitely would not go to a steakhouse. As a single woman, I have been taken on quite a few dates to steakhouses and find it a complete turn off - the atmosphere is just too masculine for a date. It gives the impression that the man only is thinking about himself when he makes that choice, and not what the woman may like. Bad move. Think about what she wants when choosing the restaurant.

In search of your favorite red borscht

I love the cold borscht at Little Poland - not far from Vselka.

Mikey's Burger on Ludlow

I am by no means a burger connoisseur, but I tried Mikey's tonight and really enjoyed it.

I ordered the BLT burger with cheese, which is a hamburger with chinese bacon, kewpie mayo, lettuce and tomato. The burger itself was juicy and flavorful on its own. But the bacon and kewpie made it a little different than just your average burger. The flavors all worked together very nicely - and the lettuce and tomato were crisp and bright and fresh.

The fires are thin cut with the skin on, and in my opinion, salted to perfection. They were a little soggy, but I did take out - so I'm thinking they make have gotten a little soggy on during the walk home.

British Indian Fusion

If you don't mind a scene, you can try Double Crown.

help at russ & daughters?

I like the gaspe nova. It's mild. Ask for it fatty. I also like the baked samlon, again ask for it a fatty piece. Both are very consistent. The sturgeon has been terribly inconsistent, so if you're going for sturgeon, ask if it's good first. ANd you should definitely get a herring in cream sauce. And a chub.

Lunch near Bryant Park for 6 people

Pera on Madison between 41st and 42nd has a $24 prix fixe. Turkish and tasty with a lovely atmosphere.

What do you drink with a JG Melon burger?

I second the bloody bull. JG cheese burger with a bloody bull... one of my favorite pairings in NYC!

Rare Chains in New York City (Findings and Request for Advice)

I believe Bon Chon and Kyochon are fried chicken chains in korea with outposts in flushing queens. That would by an interesting addition to your journey.

Soft Shell Crab on the Menu

I had the soft shells at Gotham last night. The serving was 2 nicely sized crabs (large enough that I gave half a crab to a friend I met at the bar - albeit I'm can't eat a lot in one sitting), fried and in a brown butter sauce. They were fantastic. Not too heavy, but with a richness in taste. I highly recommend.

30th birthday dinner

Try L'Ecole at the French Institute. I've noticed that they seat large parties. It's priced so reasonably that your guests are sure to appreciate. And it's a nice atmosphere... although a little loud.

Shanghai Square on 13th

Has anyone tried Shanghai Square yet?

L'Ecole at The French Culinary Institute

I am in full agreement with you. My family went there for my father's 70th birthday - and my father can be quite difficult to please! We loved it. It's a little noisy, but the food and service were spectacular, the wine list offered quite a selection - and the prices blew our minds!

What I also noticed is there is space for larger parties (approx. 10-12 people). The next birthday dinner I'm suckered into planning will definitely be at L'Ecole.

Peter Pan Peanut Butter in Downtown?

Gristedes on 14th between 5th and 6th has it too.

Bar seats for 1

I am a fan of Gotham for a solo bar dinner.

$100 to burn!

I suggest going to Pearl Oyster Bar. I took a friend of mine out for his 30th birthday and 1 app, 1 bottle of wine and 2 lobster rolls was around $100 (if I remember correctly). Not to mention it's casual, american, seafood and deeeeelicious!

Russ & Daughters vs. Murray's: the great nova and sturgeon shoot-out

My family sticks with the gaspe and the scottish salmon - we are HUGE R&D fans. However, we've had many dissappointments with the stureon of late and now only buy it when Josh recommends it. But between the smoked salmon and the baked salmon, we are forever R&D lovers.
