NYC Restaurants that Cater?

LeahBaila, this list is awesome. I was looking for the same and my search turned up your post. I just ordered catering (dinner for 12) from Meatball Shop. Such a great idea. Thanks for posting!

NY'ers spending X-mas week in Santa Ynez and are starving already

Done! We are pretty good (and eager) NYC guides, if I do say so myself....

ps. perhaps you may appreciate that we tried to go to Longhorn for breakfast and, ummm, the server was quite brusque. we decided to leave and go to Burger Barn after she grunted it would "be a while" before she could bring menus. she would not make eye contact with us at all.

we met some locals who laughed and said, "yeah, we know her. she's SO angry all the time and none of us know why. glad you didn't stay."

We had the greatest trip there. Drove to LA last night (boohoo) and we're going back home Sun.

Santa Ynez Valley is magical and magnificent. Aside from eating, my fondest memories are of walking around our "neighborhood" and feeding apples to the horses and rallying the goats for some baby carrots. I hoped the ranch owners would appreciate my giving them wholesome, organic produce only.

We'll be back in March. I hear there's a bakery opening in Santa Ynez near the drugstore. PLEASE keep me in the loop on anything else! I can't thank you all enough for your generosity and exquisite taste. You enhanced our trip immeasurably!

A few. Biked to Rideau which was our fave so far.

Made it to Succulent yesterday for lunch. Truly fab, as you said it would be. They had a crabcake sandwich special that was delicious. Wish they were open for din. They're not, I don't think. Although...hmmm...

LOVED Red Barn. I looked at hubby and said, "We're not in Kansas anymore." Seriously, nothing but imitators in NYC. This was the real deal and so far, my fave. I loved the prime rib (I am getting so fat) and their sweet pickles on the table. Perfect.
I missed the drinks in favor of wine, but I didn't read your post til just now. Have to go back for some vodka concoction.

Drove up to Rancho Oso the other day on way to hiking to take a peek, grab a flyer etc...Not sure whether they have a store, but there are def grills and even basic accommodations. Would prob be a fun place to stay for a night but we are situated on a gorgeous farm (no animals yet) surrounded by neighbors in every direction with horses (I snuck them a few apples) and goats and chickens. Yep, not in Kansas anymore.

So sad to leave tomorrow. But we'll be back in March for my bday. Already decided.

on the list!

NY'ers spending X-mas week in Santa Ynez and are starving already

Thank you! I am grabbing the scant internet connection in town for a hot minute to say hi and tell you how much we loved (so far):
Grappolo
Mattie's Tavern
Cold Springs Tavern (not the food, but the place was so special)
the farm market (sorry, blanking on name) in Los alamos (yum to their rotisserie chicken salad) near Quackenbush Cafe
and the great Mexican place in Santa Ynez.
Red Barn tonight for din, I think.
Will give a fuller report as soon as I'm back home over the weekend. Thanks to all for the fabulous suggestions. Also hiked upper Oso trail, fabulous, and going horseback riding at Oso Ranch on Thurs. HEAVEN, you lucky people, HEAVEN...

I am here now! We had to re-sched. Somebody pinch me, please. You guys are LUCKY! Woke up in Santa Ynez this morn (drove to farm in dark) and had no idea the paradise I'd wake up to. Jeez.. I'm here copying all of your amazing suggestions into an email so I can start eating (properly). Will report back fo' sho'!

San Luis Obispo: Madonna Inn restaurant and cafe review

Thanks for the comprehensive, wonderful review. I am already salivating over the cake. I'll let you know how much we loved it after our Xmas din there. Maybe won't try the propaney steak. That would bother me too. (But who eats steak on Christmas, anyway?)

i love you guys (and your coast). it's official. i might as well start packing.

Junoon (bad)...Other suggestions for Indian, please?...(very long)

Totally agree. Also, I can't recommend Devi since they served my hubby raw chicken (that's right) and then admonished him for ordering it in the first place. I ate at Dhaba recently and it was good.

We are not connoisseurs by any stretch but enjoy all kinds of wines, red and white. (this is a very sad answer, I know)

Seriously, we are open to anything in the area that you love (or like a lot) and that you feel is worth a try. Syrahs, Cabs, Chards etc...

Would love some sense of a little tour. Meaning, drive here and drink a little, then go 5 miles down the road and find next gorgeous vinyard etc...I don't think we'll go nuts with a million tastings, but would be interested to hear your top faves.

done.

Custom made Gucci's are not our style at all. We are artists, not at all into that yucky B-N-T scene. We are happy to eat with no hype. Just good food.

Credit all around! And even if you can't grant me perfect 80 degree days, I will happily bask in a single ray of sunshine that breaks through here and there. It'll surely be nicer than the weather here in Dec.

I feel like I may be pushing my luck here, but if you wanna throw your favorite vinyards at me, feel free.

A full report is absolutely forthcoming. I'll be looking forward to that! Thanks again!

No, we are staying at a friend's place in Santa Ynez. Just hubby and I (friends won't even be in town) who are from NYC and have never visited the area before. Since our CA trips usually involve work in LA or San Fran, you can imagine how excited we are to relax and enjoy it.

I am certainly not above peeking in the men's room :-) I'm sure they'll be as surprised as me...

You've seriously helped me plan our whole trip, esp now with the hiking. Can't thank you all enough. Make sure you reach out when you come to NYC, if you ever do leave your paradise there. It looks beyond gorgeous.

You guys are the best. We just booked Madonna Inn for Xmas din, now calling Cold Springs Tavern for the 26th. We plan to gain a pound a day. Thankfully, seems we can do some hiking in the area too.

OMG--Madonna Inn looks like a blast and they are open Christmas for din! Thank you so much! Such great recs all around. Now I want to plan an extra week. Thank you again!

NY'ers spending X-mas week in Santa Ynez and are starving already

Fantastic recs, very excited!

We are staying at our friend's house, though they won't be there. They are new to the area and aren't of much help yet on the food front. They do have a beautiful kitchen so if there are some nice grocery stores or farm stands nearby, I might even cook once or twice. We have 8 nights to plan for.

Thank you!

I have trolled the board and found some wonderful places in the Santa Barbara area. On my "maybe" list so far are:

Root 246
Cass House
Cold Springs Tavern
Grappolo
Super-Cuca's
Wine Cask
The Chase

We are not interested in super-fancy; just great food. We eat everything. Please let us know what absolutely not to miss (vinyards, restaurants anywhere within 30 miles of Santa Ynez) and what you feel is over-rated. (Cold Springs Tavern?)

Also, we have called around and almost every place is closed for Xmas dinner (on the 25th, not Xmas eve). Any ideas?

Thanks a million in advance. We're here for you when you come to NYC.

Upper Westside Brunch--what's good and takes a res?

Sounds great. Any guilt-free hollendaise sounds good to me.

Upper Westside Brunch--what's good and takes a res?

You rock. Thanks for doing that for me.

Upper Westside Brunch--what's good and takes a res?

booked it, thank you! haven't been to Ocean in ages but always had a good experience there.

Upper Westside Brunch--what's good and takes a res?

I have a friend coming in from out of town that wants to eat on the UWS for brunch next Sat, just the two of us. I have searched for decent places but many look blah or are too fancy (Dovetail etc..). Where would you go that would take a res? Thanks a mill.

Any reviews of current menu at LUPA?

Totally agree. So disappointed our last 2 visits, used to love it passionately. Now it all makes sense.

Where is the best place to get a wedding cake? Best value for the $

Just had a fabulous cake for hubby's bday from City Cakes in Chelsea on 18th St. LOTS of foodies at the party, lots of raves. They do fun and outrageously delicious cakes and I did not find prices to be prohibitive. I would def add it to your exploritory list.

Big Bday dinner for Mom--she loves ethnic and fun places she can't find in the 'burbs

You're kidding! (abt the Michelin star) I am so happy for them. I have been there a few times and enjoyed it. Also a good idea for mom. Thank you!
