Upscale Chinese in Baltimore?

If you are willing to travel to Hunt Valley, I've been to Jesse Wong's kitchen 3 or 4 times in as many years (most recently a few months ago) and have had very good experiences there (perhaps in contrast to other restaurants in Baltimore proper).

Problems with Whole Foods in Harbor East

I regularly go to the Whole Foods in Mt. Washington and since one unpleasant employee left years ago, have had nothing but stellar customer service at checkout and when I've made requests of the manager. If you can make the trip, it has always been a wonderful experience, at least with the employees.

Nice place to chat and hang out in B'more?

I'll second Hampden as a great place for walking around! Golden West has very good lunches. I've only been to Dogwood for dinner, but if the quality of the food and the service are comparable for lunch, it would be my vote for a place for a group of people to comfortably meet for the first time. http://www.dogwoodbaltimore.com/pdf/D...

South Indian food in Baltimore?

Not Baltimore but Catonsville: The Spicy Garden on Route 40 a little over a mile outside the beltway http://thespicygarden.com/
I can't speak to their authenticity, but can tell you that I have been twice and really enjoyed the food, including the Spicy Garden Special Dosa. It is a very casual place, almost like take out with tables. The lunch buffet provides paper plates and plasticware for dining.

Wilmington, DE Chinese--a winner!

Wow! Excellent food at Dumpling House on 11th! At first, my relatives from LA and NY were complaining about the prices, which were much higher than the chinatown prices that they are used to. So, we ordered a couple of appetizers, an order of dumplings, and two main dishes for 7 of us.

I hesitate to go on, wondering if I will be able to accurately describe it all and do the meal justice. First came the fried tofu, veggie dumplings, and scallion pancake. The tofu was light with a slightly crunchy exterior. As people around the table began to sample, you could hear mumurs of approval, and positive comments. All dishes arrived fresh and hot and were very good.

The main dishes were absolutely superb! Fried rice noodles actually had more vegetables and toppings than noodles. Vegetarian Delight - stir fried mushrooms & vegetables, were the highlight. Although the dish is slightly sweet (not my personal preference), it contained specialty mushrooms and eggplant and for those of you who like cilantro, this is an excellent dish, with just a smattering of the usual vegetables found in a chinese stir fry.

The chef came out later to greet us and I believe that she said that she is Hakka from Taiwan and uses her family recipes, and had previously owned a catering business for a number of years. She prefers that people make reservations so that she may be prepared for them. This was a great recommendation, travelmad! Thanks for your original post.

Wilmington, DE Chinese--a winner!

I am meeting 8 of my relatives in Wilmington on May 20, and would like to hear of a chinese restaurant I can take them to. I looked at the dumplinghouse link, and looked at google street view, it looks like this restaurant might be gone.

Any other ideas for good chinese food in Wilmington?

charleston

Yum! I took my parents there for my Dad's birthday earlier this month. It seemed that the earlier seatings - men were in dress pants and button down or pullovers, and the later seatings - all were in jacket & tie, and some of the ladies looked Very nice.

Local source for raw / unfiltered honey

Breathe books http://breathebooks.com/ in Hampden and the Mt Washington branch of Whole Foods sell jars of "Really Raw Honey". http://reallyrawhoney.com/

edit: per their website, they are a Baltimore based company, but I don't know if their honey is locally produced

Do you lie to your friend? Do you?

My response would depend more upon how much the questioner wanted the truth versus a pat on the back. I have a close friend or two who would prefer to be given a few props than to hear my honest opinion, and I would find something that I felt comfortable saying such as: so-and-so seemed to really enjoy your legendary dish, your guests had a great time. If anyone, strangers included, wants to hear what I truly think, I am probably too ready to offer suggestions for improvement.

Easter Brunch Baltimore

I believe Pisces has closed. http://baltimore.hyatt.com/hyatt/hote... "open for private events only"

Really good weekday lunch in or near Baltimore

I second Petit Louis, and, as previously mentioned, they have a three course Prix Fixe for $20. French onion soup (extra charge), Salmon & Greens, Chocolate Mousse - Each bite was magical.

I have had mostly good experiences at Sammy's Trattoria, always decent experiences at Thai Landing, and really enjoy Dukem for ethiopian. Aloha Sushi is one of our favorites because of the Aloha Roll and the $1 sushi. Also, a nice touch, they serve complimentary miso soup and small salad. The quality varies depending upon the sushi chef.

Two young people visiting Baltimore first time

We were confused about this also - apparently they are allowed to give a glass of wine on the house and they keep a bottle (or more) on hand. It was nice of Gia.

Two young people visiting Baltimore first time

My first experience at Gia's doesn't have me eager to return. Gia was impressed that my dinner date was willing to walk in the door before checking out the menu and offered him a glass of wine on the house - that was nice. Our server was very nice also, but pronounced prosciutto as "proskutoe" and explained "it is a kind of a ham" and also kept talking about how good the "yonky" (gnocchi) were. This would have been amusing if the food had been anything more than passable. The dressing on the grilled caesar salad was overly thick and uninspiring, and my dinner companion's chicken was dry and inedible. He is willing to go back again and give the restaurant another shot. I think life's too short. I second the suggestions of the Helmand and Iggies (818 N Calvert St, Baltimore, MD‎), both about a mile north from the Inner Harbor. Dishes at Amicci's range from savor-each-bite 'Carlo' , to save-your-$. http://amiccis.com/AmiccisMenu101508%...

Tasty Sunday morning brunches in Baltimore ?

Oh Yum! If you like mushrooms, the mushroom fritters from the mushroom lady (across from the omelette stand) are achingly good.

Do you ever like the crappy better than the excellent?

Aha, the true secret ingredient being wax not plastic. Thanks for the clarification and thank goodness for seven year olds :)

What am I missing?

I really like the lemon Larabars, but my new, absolute favorite are the sweet and salty Mojo bars by Cliff. I admit I haven't gotten past the Mixed Nuts, that's all I get when I go to the store, but I have heard good things about the Peanut Butter and Jelly flavor as well as the Mountain Mix.

Sparkling, Still, or Ice Water

In reference to the discussion thread about upselling:

Went to Pazo http://www.pazorestaurant.com/default... tonight during restaurant week. After taking drink orders, our server asked "Sparkling, still, or ice water". It was a classy method of resolving the controversy around this question.

Baltimore Artscape - What's the Food Like?

Dangerously Delicious Pies is also at the Green Food Court on Charles St (across from the Charles Theater). Their Lemon Chess pie had bits of lemon peel (in a good way) but was very sugary - I had to save the rest of my piece for later. I had a taste of the apple pie - not too sweet, great apples, amazing crust.

Right! And the quotes around the chocolate - crunchy brown melty substance possibly containing cocoa, likely containing plastic. still yummy. :)

Thanks for the info, AD. The person who told me about it also had added garlic cloves and said she reeked for that week. I think I'll pass :)

Thanks for the list, Kaz.

The Yabba Pot http://www.theyabbapotcafe.com/ on St Paul St serves amazing vegan food (and I'm an unreformable carnivore). If they have the Kale salad - I recommend a taste.

Do you ever like the crappy better than the excellent?

Ruffles potato chips with french onion sour cream dip

Campbells homestyle chicken noodle soup loaded with saltine crackers (especially when I'm sick)

Those pre-made, pre-wrapped "ice cream" cones that are coated with "chocolate" and sprinkled with peanuts really do it for me.
