Breakfast near Cobo Center Detroit

Thank you, but I suspect we won't have time to travel at all. It is a very busy convention.

Budget less than $20pp, not including drinks.

I was thinking about all the lines named after colors. plus the Expo line. My experience with Metrolink is more limited; I don't know about the rest of my group.

Great burgers Long Beach

My favorite burger in Long Beach is at the Crooked Duck on PCH near Clark. It is from grass fed, sustainably raised meat. That's probably too far for you, but I don't know of a really good burger downtown (that doesn't mean there isn't one).

When my political group has a speaker, we usually meet in the room off to the side at Casey's Irish Bar downtown, but on Aug. 9th when we next get together, Casey's is participating in some kind of beer crawl and we need another venue.

We can get from 15-40 people at our events, but the place has to be within walking distance from public transport, preferably the train. We've been to Pasadena, Culver City, downtown, North Hollywood, and Los Feliz, we live all over and we'll go just about anywhere if it's close to a train station.

Alcohol on the menu is not a requirement, but some veggie dishes would be good.

Best Markets for Cooking at Home in the Long beach Area

Enriques is a good choice and close to where you are staying. They usually have a roast chicken special that's not on the menu; it is enough for two adults depending on how much they eat or one adult and one child. You can ask them to substitute the bean soup for the rice. It is a mixture of various beans served in the cooking liquid.

Going further south on PCH brings you to Seal Beach and The Crema Cafe for breakfast and lunch. They also have a bakery with wonderful breads and pastries. The bread in the cafe comes from the bakery. From there, you can walk down the street to the Seal Beach Pier and the beach.

A little further south of Seal Beach is the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a nature center with trails suitable for strollers if your kids are that young, various kinds of wildlife and native plants. Bring binoculars for bird viewing. Kids usually love it there and it is across PCH from the beach.

Breakfast near Cobo Center Detroit

Three of us are going to a convention at the Cobo Center and staying at the Doubletree July 17-20. We are not at all familiar with Detroit and could use advice about where to eat breakfast. Actually, we don't know where to eat anything. We will not have a car. None of us is a vegetarian or gluten intolerant.

I'll be glad to return the favor if you ever travel to Long Beach, CA.

Best Markets for Cooking at Home in the Long beach Area

For in-store made tortillas, salsas and other Mexican goodies, try the Northgate Market just a few minutes away.

On Sunday, there is a big farmer's market close by here http://www.goodveg.org/LBSE.html and a Trader Joe's across the street on Pacific Coast Hwy from that.

What kind of restaurants are you interested in? How many people in your group?

Solo in Long Beach

No more Olallieberries. The pie is too sweet for me, but I had the shortcake a couple of times before it was too late. Yummy.

Is there a terrific Jewish style deli in OC?

Some things at Katella are okay, but I tried the French dip brisket sandwich recently and it was awful. The meat was so fatty I gave up trying to eat it.

Restaurant recommendations for family with kids

There is a Souplantation close to W. Hollywood, on La Cienega and 3rd, across the street from the Beverly Center mall.

Restaurant recommendations for family with kids

Bake n Broil in Long Beach is a good family choice. If there is room, the three of them can sit at the counter and the kids can watch the wait staff doing stuff. The menu is big enough for everyone to find something they can eat and they are usually pretty good about substitutions.

Lunch in the Granada Hills/Northridge area ...

A&W Seafood Chinese is affordable and close by. They have dim sum on Sundays. Call for dim sum hours.

Or you could try Mandarin Deli directly across the street. Pay extra for the handmade noodles. I recommend Noodles with Special Pork Sauce and the cold cucumber salad.

If you choose one of these, try the Hawaiian shaved ice place for dessert, just across the street south of Mandarin Deli. You might want to order a size smaller than you think you want.

Joe's really is too small for the number of people in your group.

SF Valley/West Hills

If you like burgers and prefer they come from sustainably raised beef, try Hook Burger at the northwest corner of Topanga Canyon Bl. and Erwin in Woodland Hills.

Thousand Oaks

Niroj sounds very good and the prices are very reasonable, plus there are lots of veggie options. I think this is my first choice. Thanks.

Thousand Oaks

That's the one. Great band.

PF Changs would never be at the top of my list, but could work since I think they have some tofu dishes for my veggie friend.

I know Brent's in Northridge very well, but one of us is a vegetarian and Brent's is not a great choice for him. I appreciate the suggestion and will suggest it anyway.

Thousand Oaks

We are going from Long Beach to the Fred Kavli Theater in Thousand Oaks for a concert Saturday night. I know lots of places to eat on the way, but nothing in Thousand Oaks and we would like to eat near our destination. Since we don't go to Thousand Oaks, we have no idea where to eat.

This will be the kind of concert where people get up and move to hybrid South African/Western music, so a big heavy dinner would not be my first choice. Suggestions?

Kosher chocolate in Los Angeles

Munchies looks like a good choice to check out after Passover, but for right now Whole Foods is just half a block from where my mother lives in W. Hollywood. Trader Joe's has some decent Kosher chocolate bars, but I want to get something a little more special.

Thanks.

Passover granola

I make granola without any oil or other fat. Just leave it out. You are just giving up a tiny extra bit of crunch, most of which you can get from baking a little longer. And the way to keep the fruit from getting dried out is to stir it in when the granola is completely cooled.

Kosher chocolate in Los Angeles

I would like to bring a gift to the staff of the assisted living facility my mother moved into a couple of months ago. Their certification is Rabbinical Council of California. Where can I buy something very good for the staff to share? I can wait until after Passover if there isn't anything KLP available.

Stops along the 405 West LA to Irvine

For dessert, get pie at Bake -n- Broil at 3697 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, a few blocks north of the Atlantic off ramp at 37th St. You can park in the church lot across the street except on Sundays.

Ask to see the pie list. Sometimes there are cream cakes; those are good.

I also like the sour cream pecan coffee cake (not available every day) and the lemon muffins. Skip the blueberry muffins. Mr. susans is a fan of the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I'm not a frosting fan, so can't say a lot about it.

Greenspan's Grilled Cheese Opens Friday

This place is on the way home from my mom's, it's a long drive to Long Beach and a woman needs a snack. I'd like to try a Johnny Apple Cheese without the pastrami. Sometimes simple is best.

BURGERS!

The name comes from an old family story. And they do have duck a l'orange as a special some days. I have not tried it. I don't like duck.

They may have other off-menu duck dishes and the wait person may patiently tell me about them and I may tune out because I don't like duck.

BURGERS!

My favorite right now is at The Crooked Duck, a neighborhood restaurant in Long Beach. The menu description is outdated; he is now using grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meat. The kitchen is handling the meat carefully, not squishing it together tightly so that the burger dries out.

The place is fairly small and there are a few seats at the bar. Be prepared to wait. On PCH at Clark.

Getty Center Restaurant

Thanks for the advice. There is nothing special happening at the museum during that weekend, but the Queen Victoria and Photography exhibit should be good.

I think we will have brunch. My mother loves crab cakes and maybe that dish will be on the menu then. Is this the type of place where they might do something nice if I tell them it is her 90th birthday?

Getty Center Restaurant

Looking for a place to take my mother for her 90th birthday, I've decided on the Restaurant at the Getty Center since she likes the museum and it gives us something else to do without having to drive to more than one location.

We'll be going on a weekend at the end of April. We have eaten in the Cafe, but never in the restaurant. We can go on a Saturday or Sunday. Which is better, lunch or Sunday brunch?

I've just seen that Pier 76 Fish Grill has lost it's lease and will be re-opening on Pine Ave. April 1st.

Culver City Metro Line

We went to City Tavern, which was mostly good. Our reservation was for 20 and they set up an outside table for 12, but we added seats and also sat at nearby small tables. The long tables have stools, not chairs, which don't give you anywhere to hang a sweater or purse. There are umbrellas for shade, but there aren't enough of them.

I had the roasted beet salad, which was mostly baby greens, plus shaved fennel, pieces of fresh orange, pistachios and the beets. It was good, but I've begun to find baby greens too limp and boring. The salad would have been better with some crunchy toasts or rolls.

My husband had a burger topped with a caramelized onion jam that was wonderful. I need to learn how to make that. The others seemed to be enjoying their choices, especially those who had the mac n' cheese. It looked yummy; so did the roasted cauliflower.
