Passover granola

I make granola without any oil or other fat. Just leave it out. You are just giving up a tiny extra bit of crunch, most of which you can get from baking a little longer. And the way to keep the fruit from getting dried out is to stir it in when the granola is completely cooled.

Kosher chocolate in Los Angeles

I would like to bring a gift to the staff of the assisted living facility my mother moved into a couple of months ago. Their certification is Rabbinical Council of California. Where can I buy something very good for the staff to share? I can wait until after Passover if there isn't anything KLP available.

Stops along the 405 West LA to Irvine

For dessert, get pie at Bake -n- Broil at 3697 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, a few blocks north of the Atlantic off ramp at 37th St. You can park in the church lot across the street except on Sundays.

Ask to see the pie list. Sometimes there are cream cakes; those are good.

I also like the sour cream pecan coffee cake (not available every day) and the lemon muffins. Skip the blueberry muffins. Mr. susans is a fan of the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I'm not a frosting fan, so can't say a lot about it.

Greenspan's Grilled Cheese Opens Friday

This place is on the way home from my mom's, it's a long drive to Long Beach and a woman needs a snack. I'd like to try a Johnny Apple Cheese without the pastrami. Sometimes simple is best.

BURGERS!

The name comes from an old family story. And they do have duck a l'orange as a special some days. I have not tried it. I don't like duck.

They may have other off-menu duck dishes and the wait person may patiently tell me about them and I may tune out because I don't like duck.

BURGERS!

My favorite right now is at The Crooked Duck, a neighborhood restaurant in Long Beach. The menu description is outdated; he is now using grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meat. The kitchen is handling the meat carefully, not squishing it together tightly so that the burger dries out.

The place is fairly small and there are a few seats at the bar. Be prepared to wait. On PCH at Clark.

Getty Center Restaurant

Thanks for the advice. There is nothing special happening at the museum during that weekend, but the Queen Victoria and Photography exhibit should be good.

I think we will have brunch. My mother loves crab cakes and maybe that dish will be on the menu then. Is this the type of place where they might do something nice if I tell them it is her 90th birthday?

Getty Center Restaurant

Looking for a place to take my mother for her 90th birthday, I've decided on the Restaurant at the Getty Center since she likes the museum and it gives us something else to do without having to drive to more than one location.

We'll be going on a weekend at the end of April. We have eaten in the Cafe, but never in the restaurant. We can go on a Saturday or Sunday. Which is better, lunch or Sunday brunch?

I've just seen that Pier 76 Fish Grill has lost it's lease and will be re-opening on Pine Ave. April 1st.

Culver City Metro Line

We went to City Tavern, which was mostly good. Our reservation was for 20 and they set up an outside table for 12, but we added seats and also sat at nearby small tables. The long tables have stools, not chairs, which don't give you anywhere to hang a sweater or purse. There are umbrellas for shade, but there aren't enough of them.

I had the roasted beet salad, which was mostly baby greens, plus shaved fennel, pieces of fresh orange, pistachios and the beets. It was good, but I've begun to find baby greens too limp and boring. The salad would have been better with some crunchy toasts or rolls.

My husband had a burger topped with a caramelized onion jam that was wonderful. I need to learn how to make that. The others seemed to be enjoying their choices, especially those who had the mac n' cheese. It looked yummy; so did the roasted cauliflower.

Lunch in W. Hollywood

My mother has moved to assisted living at Fairfax and Santa Monica, so I'll be going there frequently. In addition to Farmers Market, where should we have lunch?

She is a moderate eater who likes most cuisines, but not sushi or Indian. I have to travel back to Long Beach after I visit, so don't want to drive very far to a restaurant.

Long Beach next week

Coffee Cup Cafe for breakfast or lunch, 3734 E. 4th St at Grand. Don't park in the lot across the street. There is a counter and tables.

Enriques for dinner. The roast chicken is not on the menu, you have to ask for it. Comes with broccoli and his yummy rice, but you can ask for beans instead. There are a couple of combos with shrimp, but you can ask for the shrimp as an entree. I know Enrique's mother-in-law; she says he is fierce about cleanliness in the kitchen at home and in the restaurant.

It's A Grind coffee on Ocean is popular. I don't go there because it is owned by Praise International and I don't like their politics, but YMMV.

Modica's Italian deli has some good sandwiches and it is a very short drive from the convention center.

The Crooked Duck is probably too far for breakfast or lunch, but not for dinner. You can eat at the bar or a table. Very good burger and my BIL likes the meatloaf.

Culver City Metro Line

I'd really like to find a place in Culver City that can accomodate 10-20 of us, within walking distance of the Metro Line. Last time we went to Rush Street, but it would be nice to find someplace new.

Alternatively, another location Westside-ish that is also walking distance of any train is good. Less than 20 pp, not including liquor would be good. Thanks in advance.

The online menu for Park's appears to have the prices in Korean. Do you know the price range there?

Good German Chocolate Cake

Bake 'n Broil has it, but since I don't like it, I can't say if it's any good.

I just asked my husband, whose favorite cake is German chocolate, and he says BnB makes a good one.

Box Lunch Caterer serving Long Beach?

This is a place we go to in our neighborhood. They cater, but I don't know prices.
http://www.groundscafe.com/

Gelson's caters and there is now one in Long Beach on PCH/2nd St.

These folks make good sandwiches and do catering, but I don't know what they charge.

I have had food from all three. Post again if you need more suggestions.

How far off the Fwy? Five minutes, 15?

Weiler's Deli is on Nordhoff and Balboa, just five minutes (depending on traffic) west of the 405. I haven't eaten there in quite a while, others may be able to report.

A good restaurant mid-way between North Hills and Irvine?

Do you like Middle Eastern/Israeli food? If she is already in North Hills and you are going to the Valley, for less than $100 try Hummus Bar&Grill on Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana. The site has a webcam so you can see if you like the way it looks ahead of time.

CSU Long Beach

Also good at Enrique's, but not on the menu so you have to ask is a decent half roast chicken that comes with his good rice and a fresh veg (usually broccoli) and the garlic shrimp which is on the menu as a part of a combo. They don't have the chicken every day. You can ask for the shrimp as a separate entree.

They will also substitute the mixed bean soup, which is really just a variety of beans in the seasoned cooking liquid AFAICT, for refried beans on request.

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Five of us will be visiting the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden on Saturday during Smithsonian Magazine free museum day. Any recommendation for lunch? We will have already driven a couple of hours to get there, so we would like to go somewhere close if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Close to train

Thanks, but I don't think Langer's has tables big enough for us and it may be a bit too noisy. We are a political group and when we can't hear each other talk it gets frustrating.
