TJ California Olive Oil

New York City shoppers, do your local Trader Joe's sell California Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil? I've been wondering if my NYC relatives would be able to buy it there or if is it only available to us in the west.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

Thanks to both of you. Next time I'm bring my mother to Kaiser WH on a Thursday, I'll stop and buy something from him.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

I know this is an old thread, but since someone has restarted it: I saw a grass fed beef stand at the Woodland Hills Kaiser Hospital Thursday farmer's market last week. I did not have time to stop and look closely, so can't say what brand it is.

Old Ambassador Hotel

I'm going to lunch with someone who works at the LA Unified Schools complex in what used to be the Ambassador Hotel. Where can I take her and get back within an hour?

Best gourmet ice cream and patisserie?

Shortnin Bread Bakery in Long Beach makes their own ice cream, which they sell by the pint or as sandwiches. The selection changes; today I had strawberry creme fraiche ice cream between two buttermilk biscuits.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's - January thru June 2012

Organic, fair trade Sumatra coffee. I don't know if they can't get it now or it got too expensive, but it is gone. The house blend coffee is Columbian and Sumatran, but I do not remember if that's fair trade and it is a darker roast.

Knotts Berry Farm

Thanks to everyone.

Knotts Berry Farm

Thai Nakorn is one of our favorites and if my relatives like Thai and the parking is really in-and-out, I'll suggest that as a first choice. Good idea, thanks.

Knotts Berry Farm

That's what I have heard and why I am hoping there is somewhere we can walk for lunch without having to drive. I just don't want to have to pay $15 for parking twice. Avoiding park food is a given.

Knotts Berry Farm

My visiting relatives want to go to Knotts on Wednesday and I haven't been there in years. Is there any place good for lunch (no sushi) within walking distance?

How do you drink your milk?

Cold 1%, has to be hormone free. I have it on my mixture of bran flakes and homemade granola for breakfast and a glass, about 8-12 oz, before going to bed.

Coconut Cake - by the slice

Bake 'n Broil in Long Beach, but not every day.

Jongewaard's Bake N Broil

They are both good, but my favorite is the yellow cake with chocolate chips and whipped cream. It is only available occasionally, so you would have to special order it.

Trader Joe's coffee

TJ's has discontinued the organic, free trade Sumatra coffee. Anyone know who the supplier was?

Need to replace discontinued coffee

I've seen it (I think) at the Northridge store, but not around here in Signal Hill or Lakewood.

Need to replace discontinued coffee

I'm in Long Beach. We have been to Kean and like it, but it isn't really close to LB and I like to buy coffee weekly if possible for reasons I probably don't have to explain here.

Need to replace discontinued coffee

Trader Joe's has discontinued our coffee, the fair trade, organic Sumatra. I'd like to find something similar that is available locally, preferably also organic and fair trade. I know I can find that online from folks like Green Mountain, but really don't want to pay shipping if that's avoidable.

Schooner or Later (mentioned on that triple Ds show)

Nice location, but very crowded on weekends and the food is not better than you can get in other Long Beach restaurants, and not as good as my favorite Long Beach breakfast places.

De Cecco Organic Pasta

I noticed this product at Pavilions for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone tried it? Is it good?

Those crazy French! How do YOU eat your burger?

+1

POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?

Long Beach, CA. I can walk to a Pavilions in 5 mins, Albertson's, Stater Bros, and Fresh and Easy are 5 minutes further. Going in another direction, Ralphs takes 15 mins. Bristol Farms would probably take about 20 and to get there, I would pass a Target that has everything but fresh meat.

Lefthanders, how do you eat?

+1

Left noodles boxed up on the kitchen counter all night. Is it okay to eat?

I remembered reading about rice and food poisoning, so paged through my books. Here's what Harold McGee says: most raw rice has dormant spores of Bacillus cereus, which produces powerful gastrointestinal toxins, some of which survive cooking at high temperatures. In cooked rice left out for several hours at room temp, the spores germinate and the bacteria multiply, so toxins accumulate.

A mixture of rice vinegar and sugar acts as an antimicrobial.

Is your extra virgin olive oil " Extra Virgin "

When all this started to come out, and after reading the New Yorker article, we switched to California oil. I have not read anything that suggests California EVOOs are adulterated. Anyone know differently?

Long Beach convention center

Okay, now I'm feeling testy. Your OP does not say dinner.

Long Beach convention center

Are you asking about dinner? Breakfast? What's your budget?

Vegetables that cannot (or at least should not) be eaten raw?

That article is nonsense. While it is true that people who have hypothyroidism should eat some foods such as cruciferous vegetables and soy in moderate amounts, the rest of the suggestions are ridiculous. There is no such thing as the thyroid diet.

Left-handers - how do you handle your cutlery?

Fork or spoon in left hand and knife in the right. I do not switch hands after cutting. When eating with people other than family (where we all know who's who and where to sit), I remind them that I'm left handed and we adjust the seating accordingly.

Husband is having gallbladder removed

My mother, husband and I all had ours removed years ago. None of us were told to do anything other than eat the healthy diet we should eat with or w/o it. My husband's diet is terrible and he has had no problems. Mine is mostly pretty good: no problems for me. My mother eats too much saturated fat, but she has no digestion-related issues.

ETHNIC markets ??? Long Beach area (Middle Eastern, Indian, Indonesian, Korean, etc)

There is a 99 Ranch Market in on Pioneer in Artesia, where there are also various Asian Indian places (sorry, but I don't know any names). You could just park on Pioneer and walk down the street.
