Tre Venezie -- worth it?
If a Michelin star is what draws you, I would suggest the Dining Room at the Langham Huntington Hotel. Craig Strong puts out some seriously delish food
Late-night dining near South Pasadena/Pasadena area
We went to the late happy hour at Red White and Bluezz on evening, and had a choice of 3/.4 or 5 course fixed price menu as well as a nice selection of ala carte entrees. I would certainly go back there again
Pasadena - Family Place with Character for Baptismal Celebration?
Red White and Bluezz
Briganti in South Pasadena-resh house made pasta and the gnocchi is awesome
Firefly is family friendly but the food can be hit or miss
Chef Al Rosas - Organic Chef - Content Thief
I despise people that steal work from others and then call it their own. it would be sad to be forced to watermark your images, but perfectly understandable. I so enjoy th food blogging community. Everyone I have encountered has a true and generous spirit, sharing a part of themselves as well as the recipes, and the beautiful photography is icing on the cake for me. I spend hours reading food blogs. The Rosas of the world must be stopped, and quite frankly he should be hit monetarily.
TOP CHEF FINALE THEORY
I've never seen Stefan as a villain, and I think he got a taste of humble pie after last weeks dressing down. I just get a bad vibe from Hosea, much like I did Elan from his season. I suspect hosea will be the bigger ass, as he seems intent on "besting" stefan, when what he should focus on is being the best regardless of who is left in the competition.
I shall miss Fabio. Funny guy. Not as adventurous with his food perhpas, but a solid human being and great cook.
Biscuits and gravy
Sadly, unless I make them mysel, the only time I have had good biscuits with Sasuage gravy is when I head back to the NC mountains.
I have hit on a good solution for us White Lily flour deprived folks. use your favorite biscuit recipe, and substitute regular cake flour for 1/2 the AP flour. I do the frozen grated butter as well. i think you need a mamaw's touch to do it with the fat in a softer state.
Huge King Crab Leg Problem
Since they are already cooked, I heat them through in a huge roasting pan in the oven. this method doesn't add any more water to the luscious crab, and the heated shell imparts flavor into the crab as it is reheating.
MMMMMMMMM pass the butter and lemon!
WOOOHOOOO - Gordon and Hell's Kitchen are back this Thursday
I've watched since season one. Who doesn't love trash talking tv?! Now GR's nemesis, Marco Pierre White is getting a show too. I guess we'll see where the hurling o abuses originated as I do recall ramsay mentioning that Marco was the only person to ever make him cry.
I must say, that last weeks episode, a completion of service by both teams could bear out well for the rest of the season. I mean, in season's past it wasn't until near the end of season that any team could get their act together long enough to complete a service.
I prefer the Brit version of Kitchen Nightmares, and I really enjoyed this season of the F word.
La Canada
La Canada, San Marino and South Pasadena were our three choices when we relocated here. I can say that now, South pas has a number of restaurants to choose from in the time since we have moved here.
It seems La Canada would be an easy enough location to get to some "good eats" in nearly every direction.
Ultimate Top Chef
By unique ingredients, I didn't mean blasphemy in the kitchen ;-)
I think a protein, veg/fruit a not so common herb or spice as mandatory components would force them into one aspect of the competition that hasn't been, or is difficult to demonstrate for the viewers. Taste everything, and create something wonderful.
I hated that quickie mart challenge and the vending machine challenge. Allow these chefs to be chefs and bring on challenges that chefs face in the kitchen every day.
Fresh & Easy coming in Pasadena
I appreciate the inexpensive sandwich bread. With 4 kids and many lunches, it is much better quality than the cheapie air puffed loaves at Pavilions.
I have only purchased a chuck roast at F&E so I can't review anything else, but it was horrible. basolutely disgusting. The connective tissue never melted down, and the flavor was wretched.
Limited selection, but it is a regular stop now for a fvery ew staple items.
Help! Good Restaurant near beverly Hills/ Hollywood
It's going to come down to where you might get a reservation! I prefer Mastro's over Cut, but given the restaurant is in their hotel, would you stand a chance of getting a reservation there a bit earlier?
Foie Gras
I like seared preparations the best. I had a seared Foie served with a bricohe bread puddin, some salted roasted nuts and caramelized stone fruit. Each part on their own was fabulous, and in combination, that creamy atty goodness and the sweet/salt/sour component, oh man, my mouth is watering. Unfortunately this restaurant buckled to the Foie haters, and alas I still await the recipe :-(
Honeycrisp Apples?
I've enjoyed honeycrisps. I tried a JAZZ apple this year, and have been buying them every time I see them.
My all time favorite from my east coast days remains the Northern Spy
Ultimate Top Chef
for the challenge I wouldn't mind seeing a few mandatory ingredients, odd pairings,,if you will.Somewhat reminiscent of Ready Set Cook.
A signature Dish round
Just desserts would also be a good challenge as so many contestants constantly whine, I am not a pastry chef..desserts aren't all about pastry, and surely if one can cook, one can come up with a dessert of some sort
Top Chef Carla - Fraggle Rock
LOLOL. When she was in the confessional,my husband was saying she was big bird! raggle Rock is an even better character reference.Hootey Hoo!
Top Chef 5 - Picks for Top Three?
The last couple of weeks have been an improvement. It's been a rather ho hum season. I do like though, that their behavior in the kitchen, at least up to this point is more representative of what goes on in a real kitchen.Helping each other, while highly competitive, they seem to genuinely appreciate and respect each other.Fabio just cracks me up every week. Should he be eliminated I will miss his "Its top chef, not top_______" Surely that will be this years T shirt unveiled at the reunion, LOL.
Carla has been the sleeper all season, I think both she and Fabio shook Stephan up a little bit this week. That's good. he needed that to happen.
Too bad jaimes dish was so miserably bad, I liked watching her work in the kitchen.
I'm glad Leah is gone. Nothing I can truly put my finger on, just didn't appreciate her at.all.
Chopping Block
Anyone going to be tuning into this American spin on "The Last Restaurant Standing"? The show features Marco Pierre White, and the story is that couples will be competing for their own restaurant.
So many food spinoffs lately. I get that the TV guru's see the need for great food television, but we will reach a point of oversaturation, especially if the best they can come up with are knockoffs , or substandard shows. I'll give this show a shot, but I suspect, given the connections to the Hells Kitchen prod company, that they will overly dramatize ala Gordon Ramsay.
Dutch bakeries in Pasadena area?
I grew up with hagelslag, and was absolutely stunned to find it at a coupe of asian markets, and a few Med ones as well.
I always orget which, but there is some Asian market going up either at Garfield or Atlantic that crosses Valley or Mission that would be close to you. I'll have to take a drive out and get a better location for you LOL.
Fresh salted butter on a dutch rusk and some hagelslag is the ultimate snack!
Kogi Korean BBQ Taco Truck - Perceptor's Report
I've read the buzz and look forward to trying it myself soon!
Now, if only a dessert truck were around!
What is a good food that can last 3 hours in a car?
I was going to suggest Porto's as well.
Where do I find pork belly?
I was lead to HK Korean market by a poster on this board after he/she purchased some black pig belly there.
also, Mitsuwa does carry the small portions you are looking for, though I have never specifically gone looking for pork belly there.
Alexanders meats in SGV also offer high end pork, but frozen.
Steelers Fan Club in Los Angeles
What are the best Steeler bars in the Los angeles area? I saw a generic list on the Post gazette Website, but I want to find the best place to go for some good Superbowl fun with great Steeler Fans! We're season ticket holders and were bummed when we didn't score tickets from the Steeler lottery this year, but that won't stop us from celebrating with the Steeler nation!
750ml Closed ?
Hm, interesting. We have a couple of independent Pizza places here. Nona's and Mammas. I wonder what their spin on the beloved pizza pie will be?
Oh how I wish someone would do REAL Chicago deep dish.I'll ask around about C&M, unless someone responds first. Thanks Adsvino!
750ml Closed ?
I was driving along Mission in South Pasadena, and the brown paper is up on all the windows, no life inside whatsoever. Does anyone know what happened or is happening with this place?
Chef Jeff Project on FN
I did some work on his show while they were filming here. I will raise a glass and make a toast as I watch the premiere. Congrats Jeff and family!!
Porto's Bakery -- I am speechless!
I don't think i have purchased anything that wasn't absolutely delish and fresh too. the cookies are an absolute bargain. we order dozens of them for school functions. Cheaper than the bakery varieties at the grocery stores and much tastier too.
Now I have to go toPorto's this week. you gave the crave :-)
Dazzling The Senses With Something Organic, Fresh and Delicious - APPLE Restaurant [Review] w/ Pics!
I always enjoy your reviews! it sounds like the Ogden talent lives on in the next generation. Hmm, I have a birthday coming up very very soon, I think I shall take your advice and book a reservation on a non-club night.
Bakery fun
