Validating South Boston's latest news & rumors

Had brunch recently (10/21) at Franklin Southie and was fairly disgusted. The food was cold and uninspired, the portions were miniscule and the bloodies were weak with way too much horseradish.
I know brunch isn't a big thing but any restaurant that sells any meal needs to be aware that every meal represents the company and the pride it takes in its offerings.

November Openings and Closings

Good Riddance to King's! What a pit and the food was inedible. Thank God for the new Al Wadi!
Rather have 100 Thai restaurants in West Roxbury than 1 King's. It was THAT bad.

Does anyone know what's going into the old "Spring Blossom" space on the VFW Parkway? There's been a ton of construction and the new place appears a heluva lot more swank (or clean for that matter) than the old dive.

Not to Misses in Dedham

Tahiti is great if you like to get super-drunk, then get in fights with soon to be exes. Other than that, the food is genuinely bad...lots of grease and they seem to use the same sauce for most of their food. Avoid like the plague unless you WANT to appear in the Police Blog of the Dedham Times.

JP - Royal Fried Chicken? new Chinese?

Does any one know the name of the new Chinese place? I posted a thread here a few months ago moaning and whining about the dearth of good Chinese takeout in the JP, Roslindale area. There really, truly is a need around here.

norwood boston suburb 3 days any recommendations?

Byblos in Norwood Centre is great. I love Lebanese/Syrian cuisine and this place really satisfies. Isabella in Dedham Square is also pretty good, sort of new American cuisine-y at reasonable prices.

The pumpkin Kaddo and Banjan Challow at Helmand is delicious.

In search of poutine

See if you can hitch a ride to Montréal Fries on Route 106 in West Bridgewater. It's the only source of authentic poutine in the area.

Ethnic Restaurants: What mistakes can they get away with?

I was involved in a discussion regarding Kouzina Estiatorio in Dedham on ethnic restaurants. I felt the place was good even though the salads were only perfunctory because the actual greek dishes were great, their mousakka and pastitsio were very tasty and rich and seemed to be taken seriously. Luther W argued that supermarket tomatoes made the whole place not so good.

I'd be curious to see what others felt.

What's the word on Kouzina Estiatorio in Dedham?

No, I would have to go with Lergnom on what's culturally significant. WHen I go to Kouzina Estiatorio I order the mousaka or pasticho and enjoy the richness and taste of the food . I don't expect the salad to be the focus and half the time I don't even look at it, never mind eat it.
My favorite chinese place has some great food but they still send bread rolls home in my takeout bag.
When I was young ( long time ago) my best friend's Italian born mother used to make unbelievable Italian food but she still made those miserable 60's salads with iceberg, fake tomatoes and Kraft dressings for her American husband. Go figure!

What's the word on Kouzina Estiatorio in Dedham?

I've eaten there a few times and while I'm certainly no expert on Greek food, I found the place pretty good. The salads are pretty prefunctory but I really liked the mousaka, the tsatziki, and the pasticho. Their bechamel sauce is rich and satisfying. I would avoid anything with fresh tomatoes as they seem to use the supermarket kind with no flavor. The place itself is sort of a mixture of takeout and restaurant, the room is small and decorated with the archetypal posters and photos of Greece.
The people are Greek and they're pretty friendly, a real improvement over the Greek restaurant they replaced.

Chipotle Shoppers World

If, like myself, you despise cilantro then there is very little that Chipotle can serve you. Every little thing there is loaded with the hateful weed. If you ask for no cilantro it really flusters them. Even Anna's has fewer cilantro laden choices than Chipotle!! By the way, I've been told that if you think cilantro tastes like soap it's genetic.

All Star Sandwich Bar: a late first look

If you are looking for a really nice poutine that's as close to the Québec version as I've ever tasted you should try Montréal Fries off Rte. 24 in West Bridgewater (exit 16B). The fries are handmade and fried twice and the chicken gravy is also homemade. The curds are super fresh and squeaky. Poutine is one of those foods that you either love or hate but I love it.

ISO place for a long lunch near Marshfield/Duxbury

Yup, the Fairview Inn is such a nice place to have a summer lunch. I love the open ocean view and the food is fairly good. By no means fancy or gourmet but it's good food well prepared.

How about the Fairview Inn in Marshfield (Brant Rock)? They have a gorgeous deck with open ocean views and decent food. When I want OCEAN this place is the first place I think of.

Arepas

I love the arepas at Viva Mi Arepa! The place is so warm and friendly but as kpark30 stated, there is little English spoken here by anybody.
Their vegetarian arepa with beans is to die over but it's awfully filling!

I think Sfiha is very similar to Armenian Lamejuns (sp) which are available in a few places in Watertown.

West Roxbury, Roslindale area

West on Centre is pretty good and has a great bar with a fireplace. Another sweet little unsung place is the Spring Street Café near where Vintage used to be. Great food with reasonable prices. They have super breakfast food there also.

J.P, Roslindale, West Roxbury Chinese Food?

Well, I and my co-workers have just endured another miserable, tasteless, ultra-greasy Chinese food delivery (this time from Imperial Garden in Rozzie Square, horrible and missing half the condiments!) and we're growing increasingly desperate. Are there no good Chinese places around here?!?
Help out a few really hungry, really frantic healthcare workers and give us some hope!

New Sandwich Shop in Dedham

Santoro's Trattoria, a new Italian foods and take out on Rt. 109 in Dedham, opened a few months ago and it's pretty nice. The sandwiches are really high quality and the Italian takeout is great. The owner has done a lovely job on the place and the food is delicious. I really recommend it.

Where to buy local strawberries?

Why don't you try Allandale Farm in J.P.? Even if they don't grow their own (which I don't know if they do or not) they have agreements with other local farms for stuff they don't grow.

Bay Sweets Market; West Roxbury.

I also love this place. The sandwiches are great, the pastries are to die for and the selection of groceries fabulous. The people are also friendly and helpful.
