Where is the "real" cajun/Creole in LA county?

I have yet to find really satisfying New Orleans/cajun grub in LA. Whenever I'm dying for a fix of something from back home, I head to Popeye's Fried Chicken for their spicy chicken, and an order or two of their red beans and rice. During Crawfish season, you can find the real deal mudbugs at New Orleans Fish Market on Vernon. Their po-boys are OK, but won't fool anyone who's ever had the authentic stuff. FWIW, I make my own lazy-mans gumbo using one of the box mixes like Tonys or Zatarains and kick it up a notch...saute onions, celery and bell pepper, smoked sausage and shrimp (get shrimp in the shell and peal them and boil the shells for stock - makes a HUGE difference. Add a dash of mace and some chopped parsley and green onions at the end and enjoy. Better than anything I've found around town...

A very humbling ISO-Kung Pao

So, this evening the KP Shrimp Jones struck and it was off to Chinese Friends on Broadway.

This is getting closer to what I'm looking for - nothing but Shrimp, green onions, peppers and peanuts. Best of the bunch so far and will certainly "scratch the itch".

The seasoning was a bit different than Spring Garden but otherwise perfectly wonderful.

Will have to try some of the other recommendations in the new year.

Thanks again to all who offered recommendations!

Will do - KP shrimp was not on the menu at Tasty, but they gladly accommodated.

Appreciate your recommendations - for various reasons we haven't had much chance to sample the wonderful chow in the SGV until recently. Very much looking forward to doing lots more. Would appreciate other Sichuan recommendations as well!

OK, went to Tasty Garden today for KP Shrimp. Best version I've had other than Spring Garden.

Still disappointed, though. You're right about the sauce - absolutely addicting. But, had the usual carrots and celery and not nearly enough green onions.

Wonderful none the less, and will certainly go again as some of the other dishes we saw look great.

Thanks for recommending!

Any place in particular in the SGV you'd recommend for KP Shrimp? Loved the dish at Spring Garden in Pasadena, but now closed. )~:

Thanks for recommending this. My favorite version of KP Shrimp is as you describe - meat, scallions and peanuts. Spring Garden used to do a stellar version, but sadly they're gone...been looking for a replacement...will have to give Hu's a try.

Ainsley-Harriott Thai Chicken Lemongrass soup - anywhere in LA?

OK, got addicted to this stuff on a recent trip to UK. Brought back a bunch but now it's all gone and I need more!

Seems like I can order it online from the UK, but don't see anyplace in the US. Anyone seen it lurking on a store shelf anywhere here in town?

Thanks!

Frozen Fordhook lima beans - where to buy?

Thanks all for the suggestions. Will have to try Gelsons and some other Vons stores - the local ones don't have them.

As to the question of if the small ones are the same, they are not...different animal...not just small Fordhooks. For those of you who have never had Fordhooks, it's worth the effort to find them if you like beans.

For now, the quest continues...

These used to be available in the frozen vegetable section of every supermarket, but now I can't seem to find them anywhere! Suggestions appreciated...

Dry Pinquito Beans - where can I find them?

Hey, many thanks for the offer...I'm in South Pas, so a bit more of a hike than I can do at the moment. Worst case, we go with a substitute, but really like the pinquitos!

Doing some BBQ tomorrow and am out of pinquitos - DRAT! I usually get them at the South Pas farmers market, but have never seen them elsewhere. Any suggestions?

Where is the "real" cajun/Creole in LA county?

Everything I've had in LA is pale in comparison to real NO grub. But, if you want a real taste of a pretty authentic dish, have the red beans and rice at Popeye's Fried Chicken. Best I've had anywhere in LA. Yes, it's a chain, but started by homeboy Al Copeland (quite a colorful character - do a google search on him!) and it's the real deal. I know, one dish but the quintessential NO comfort food. Whenever I'm feeling homesick, it's time for Popeyes...the spicy chicken is also great.

Also, 'tis the season for some crawfish from the New Orleans Fish Market on Vernon. Scoop up a couple o' pounds and a dozen or two of Blue Point oysters and a couple o' cold ones and you're almost there. No great po boys or muffalettas that I've found, but Oh Well! Yet another excuse to visit.

Freeze-dried/dehydrated fruit and vegetables, where to buy retail?

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. Torn and Glasser - great idea, did not think of them. The surplus-type places I know are mredepot, Major Surplus, the place on Venice and Motor in Culver and the one on Hollywood Blvd. (Sorry, don't remember names!) They all have similar stuff. I'll try some of the other places suggested, but please keep 'em coming.

"Farm Boy" - location(s)?

There are lot's on line, but looking for some place local to pick up.

Freeze-dried/dehydrated fruit and vegetables, where to buy retail?

Is there any place in LA that handles freeze-dried or dehydrated foods? I know about the surplus places and camping stores, but looking for some place with larger quantities. Prefer #300 or #10 type cans but other packaging for storage would work. Any thoughts? Any "survivalist" type place out there I don't know about?

TIA

F/Q Dinner for ~16

Hi All - I've been reading through a number of posts and would appreciate comments. I'm looking for some place in the Quarter for a group of ~16 on a Tuesday evening.

The criteria from the sponsor: "Doesn’t need to be ritzy - but good food, good value and fun is always a plus. "

Based on the input from other recent posts, I was thinking:

Redfish Grill

Bourbon House

Ralph and Kacoo's

Other thoughts? Any obvious place I missed. We did the Pelican Club previously and it was just OK.

TIA,

Kauai Wedding Dinner for 22 - Recommendations?

I'm posting this for a friend who is getting married in Kauai on September 28. She would like to have a dinner at a nice restaurant and has a couple of requirements beyond it being a nice setting:

1) Total cost <$1500

2) Ability for everyone to order from the menu.

Beyond that, she's open to suggestions. Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

Thanks!

Anyone know of a source of food and food storage equipment for long term disaster preparedness in Southern California? I'm looking for the big cans of stuff like beans, rice, other stable food items. Also looking for DIY supplies like buckets, mylar bags, etc. So far, no luck. Major Surplus advertises stuff, but it's not available...I checked.

Any ideas appreicated.

EARTHQUAKE -- THE BIG ONE, What to Eat?

Does anyone know of a good source of disaster prep food supplies in So. Cal.? I'm looking for stuff prepared for long term storage in appropriate containers. How about the equipment to store your own items - plastic buckets, oxygen absorbers, mylar bags, etc.

Any help appreciated.

Oyster Shucking Equipment - Where to get?

Hi all - I'm planning on shucking a few dozen oysters for a party soon, and need to get my hands on a proper Oyster knife, lead and glove.

Has anyone seen these items for sale locally? Would prefer to not have to ship an oyster lead - gotta cost a fortune.

Thanks in advance!
