One day in Reims/Champagne - suggestions?

Thanks, CJ. Just finished the book "Champagne" and I'm quite sure it will enhance my visit next month. Also just booked lunch at Assiette Champenois our first day in Reims and dinner there our last night!

Merci

Hollywood Chow-ography!

I second the Diamond Bakery, especially the challah (egg bread) and their corn rye--and you can get both at the bakery section of the Ralph's at Sunset and Fuller. And while you're their be sure to pick up a pint of any chip flavor of Graeter's Ice Cream. I've never had better, Yum!

Appropriate Dress in Paris

:)

Authentic French bistro/brasserie (not fine dining) Westside to South Bay preferred

I second Le Petit Bistro on LaCienega. Just ate there tonight. Always native French patrons there when I have been and I know at least some of the waiters speak French--ask for a French-speaking waitperson. Reasonable prices.

Jean Pierre's food at Cafe des Artistes in Hollywood is authentic and reasonable, but I've never encountered a French-speaking waitperson there.

I think Delphine in the W Hotel on Sunset would be perfect. Check it out:

2010 Beijing Restaurant Reviews by ALEDM

What a great report! Comprehensive doesn't beging to describe it!

Thank you

XIV - A Disappointment

A couple of very good dishes. The rest were okay. Serious lapses in service, including long periods with empty glasses. Impressive wine list; very extensive; very pricey. Overall: a serious disappointment. We won't be returning.

What's the best place for breakfast in Montreal

Thanks for this. I tried L'Avenue because of your write-up. Excellent!

Baked Alaska

Well, they're different, but sweetened, whipped egg whites = meringue.

Baked Alaska?

Sardi's. Really good.

Baked Alaska

I too love Baked Alaska, but it's just so hard to find. Sardi's in New York does a really good one. And I had an excellent one, an individual portion, at a brasserie in Toulouse a couple of years back.

But if you've never had Ile Flotant at L'Express, you must go. Quite amazing. See attached photo.

mid-range french bistro

I agree with Le Petit Bistro above. Very reasonable and most times you will hear some tables speaking in French, a hearty endorsement.

Also, Cafe des Aristes at 1534 N Mccadden Pl in Hollywood. The chef, Jean Pierre, is Alsatian and the food reflects that.

Looking for Private Dining Room with Screen and A/V Capabilities in Los Angeles area

The HT Grill in Redondo Beach has a very nice, private room with AV hook-ups. We used it last year. Fits in your price range, too.

MISTRAL SHERMAN OAKS......

Yup. Impressive.

Lunch "like" Larchmont Bungalow

Try Off Vine. Nice, laid back bungalow in Hollywood with good food and reasonable prices:

Quiet Place for Drinks in Hollywood, Studio City or Sherman Oaks?

Both great suggestions!

Thanks so much.

Quiet Place for Drinks in Hollywood, Studio City or Sherman Oaks?

Thanks very much Perk. I had dinner there several years ago. It would be perfect, except for the fact that they close at 9 pm on Sunday. Since we're meeting after dinner and haven't seen each other in years, I'm afraid their closing time would cut our conversation short.

Quiet Place for Drinks in Hollywood, Studio City or Sherman Oaks?

I don't do bars normally, but need to meet an old friend for a few hour of drinks and conversation Sunday evening. (I know this is similar to another recent topic but we're limited to the areas above.) Would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks

Dinner recs for Sat night Hollywood or mid-City

Gardens of Taxco is excellent. See if you can get their back room. Five-course, Mexico City homestyle cooking for under $20. It's fun, festive and most of their dishes are flavorful but not at all spicy (I can't handle anything remotely hot). Also, Cafe des Artistes, a very good, affordable French bistro, Koji's for shabu-shabu and Minestraio for Italian. Have a great time!

Mediocre Bouchon

I disagree about the food. Some of the best French in LA, albeit at prices far about bistro level. But, sadly, this place has succumbed to the VIP syndrome. Try, just try, to get a reservation at normal dinner hours, even during the week, if you're not among LA's elite.

Rio trip report (long)

Thanks so much for your wonderful write-up. I just returned from Manoel & Joaquim where I had their garlic shrimp (called "small fried shrimp" on their English menu). Fabulous!! Some of the best shrimp I've ever had. My advice: try the fried banana for dessert; a small portion is plenty for two. Most excellent!

Rio de Janeiro - The Deck on Copacabana for feijoada and other good food.

Thanks to your recommendation, I've been to The Deck three times in the last two weeks and will return at least once more. Once, I tried their "limitless pizza" for $12 US. Waiters just keep coming around with different pizzas every few minutes; you can ask for a slice or pass. And they keep coming, till you can't handle any more. Also, had meat, seafood and their ice-cold Brahma draft beer. And from the first, they treated me warmly. Thanks so much for your recommendation

Thanks. I'm headed there next month and look forward to enjoying The Deck.

Two weeks of chow in Buenos Aires - reviews

Going next month and have lots of notes on your reviews. Thanks very much.

New Year's Eve 2010 in Buenos Aires -- where should we eat?

Amazing what one finds on this Board. I'm from LA and headed to BA for Christmas and the week before! If any foodies want to get together Dec. 14-26, give me a shout.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

Noisy but Excellent

After reading many positive foodie comments here, finally got a chance to check this place out. The food, in a word, is excellent. We had the Burrata with tomatillo salsa and the lettuce, beets, avocado, pita, feta and creamy sumac to start, then fried quail with grits, chard, bacon and maple jus and the bbq pork belly and slaw sandwiches. Each dish was interesting and absolutely delicious. The only negative was the sticky toffee pudding which was waaaaaaay too salty! As noted above, the place is VERY noisy; conversing requires strong vocal chords, even at close quarters. And, while the food prices are reasonable, the wines are quite expensive. The only wines in single figures for a glass are the house red and white. I saw only a couple of bottles in the 40's. Lots of other choices, but $50 and up...and up.

Good food/drinks near Sunset and Fairfax

Was not impressed by The Counter, neither the burger nor the service. Definitely not worth the price.
