Dinner at Kajitsu this month
I reserved for next month, I'm not a fan of the 4 courses of carbs this month. Theres a sushi course, a okayu course, somen course and a rice course, thats way too much.
Ootoya japanese Teishoku restaurant now opened
The chawanmushi has ume puree on it, but yeah its not the best chawanmushi. I wish you could substitute it for tofu.
Hakkasan - new luxury Chinese restaurant in Midtown
When has Platt ever been right about asian food?
JAPAN FAIR TODAY
Hey Eric, did you try their demiglace hamburg. I thought it was very good by NYC standards.
JAPAN FAIR TODAY
East Village? Are you sure? I know of two Kyushu style Izakayas but they're both in the West Village. Have you been to Ootoya yet? Its great.
"Tommy Lasagna"??...ugh...Irving Place area needs better restaurants! (long)
Well its not as bad as 3rd Ave
Short List Tokyo Recommendations
Tsukemen - Check out Rokurinsha in Tokyo Station's Tokyo Ramen street.
Tsukiji eats - theres a good Aji Fry place next to Sushi Dai
Yakiniku - 2 blocks from Gotanda Station, near the Tokyo Stay Gotanda Hotel there is a Yaki Horumon/Yakiniku place. Sorry I cant remember the name.
Horumon - Akachochin in Shinjuku is excellent, think its much much better than Takashi in NYC
Here it is, my Tokyo and Kyoto selection - Final advices welcomed
Sushi Bun is probably the worst of your choices. It could have been a bad day, but the rice was super mushy on the day I went.
Tsunahachi doesnt have much of a wait. There is also the higher end Tsunahachi Rin as option if you want more of a splurge. Maybe hold off on Tempura in Tokyo and goto Ten You in Kyoto.
Quick impressions Le Chateaubriand, L'Agape Substance, Verjus, Le Comptoir du Relais, Akrame
Mostly in Japan. I did have one place in spain notify me via email.
My nose is not that sensitive, I dine out very often and all over the world and I have never encountered this.
What was worse was the women in their group seemed to have reapplied more perfume whenever they returned from the restroom.
Quick impressions Le Chateaubriand, L'Agape Substance, Verjus, Le Comptoir du Relais, Akrame
In some countries its pretty common for restaurant websites or FOH staff to tell customers over the phone not to wear heavy perfumes/colognes when dining at their establishment.

Forgive me but my memory is awful and I tend to remember the bad more than the good.
Day one Lunch at Le Comptoir - quick 5 minute wait after being greeted by with "irrashai" by friendly Japanese cooks, had a excellent main of Quail stuffed with foie, rolled in cabbage with a fried croquette of braised quail and pea puree. Had the best citrus tart ever.
Day one Dinner at Verjus - Friendly american style service, felt food was safe, underwhelming except for the gazpacho with a bit taberayu(japanese chili sesame oil)in it. Deserts were just okay, my wife said her yogurt cake tasted like something from costco or entermanns.
Day two Dinner Le Chateaubriand - surprised how easy it was to get a reservation. One quick phone call midday EST and I was set. Really friendly staff, lots of good-great courses, fun ideas like dipping strawberries in the candied fennel seeds always found at the cashier stand at indian restaurants, only one course was really bad, fresh bonito aka katsuo. It tasted a bit like the cheap albacore tuna you see at really bad sushi restaurants in the states, a bit metallic and papery. Also felt a bit awkward with people waiting in line to be seated after 9:30 right next to you while you ate though.
Day three Lunch Akrame - Best meal of the trip, excellent albeit a bit too professional service(for us anyway), every dish made sense, and every odd combination worked, also I felt like they were trying to kill us with course after course, we started to worry we ordered the 6 course because of a language barrier issue instead of the 4. One course that stood out was a slow poached egg with peanut\sesame based sauce and a saffron powder, but it reminded us of old school Nissin Chicken ramen.
Day four Dinner at Agape Substance - This would have been the second best meal of the trip if it were not a few issues, mostly not staff related. We sat near a loud party of 8, which resulted in not hearing food descriptions, and not being able to smell our courses because of their heavy perfume and colognes. It wasnt just us that was annoyed by the group, other patrons asked for seating changes further to the back of the communal table and were denied, the two friendly gentlemen next to us tried to settle their bill quickly.
Japanese Food in Paris?
After 5 days in Paris eating nothing but brasserie or modern french, I was dying to have a decent donburi or chirashi with some miso soup last night. It really is bad here.
where can I get better yakitori than Yokocho has?
I didnt get that vibe. When I went it was mostly Japanese families, lots of kids, a few salarymen. Once 8:30 hit, the place cleared out a bit, and then the flock of upper east dude bros, #menswear types came in chugging hot sake and asking why there isnt a roll list.
where can I get better yakitori than Yokocho has?
The charcoal taste is more pronounced in the veg offerings.
where can I get better yakitori than Yokocho has?
Tori Shin. I finally went friday and they had the best oyako don I ever had in ny. Their raw eggs are super bright deep orange like the ones you would get served in Japan. Only annoying thing, you cant order things like hiza nankotsu, neck bones, chicken oysters, or ovaries ala cart, you can only get them in their omakase course or maybe they make an exception if you are a regular. At totto you would have to show up at like 6pm to order these items before they get sold out Also the place got surprisingly dead after 8:30PM on a friday night.
Best sushi/sashimi these days
The staff at 15 East makes you feel like its a neighborhood mom and pop restaurant except its a bit pricey and has nice decor. Shimizu san either has a really good customer database or incredible memory. Not sure how he can remember where my wife is from and how small she likes her nigiri made.
Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca
How much did the omakase cost? Was it multiple tiers or no set price?
Bobwhite Lunch vs. The Cardinal ?
Really? The Cardinal is one of the most reasonably priced sit down places in the east village, its a better value than the Redhead. I never had a wait because I go on weeknights or I use opentable for weekends. Their fried chicken is just okay, I found it a bit under seasoned but well cooked and juicy, I think their BBQ and their pies is their strong suit.
The Redhead is good, but the last 2 times I went my breast came out medium rare.
Backforty makes pretty good fried chicken as well.
Korzohaus is doing fried chicken on Wednesdays now.
My favorite is still Blue Ribbon\Brooklyn Bowl or Totto(not the same type of fried chicken)
Neta: Ex Masa and Bar Masa Head Chefs Open an Understated Stunner in the West Village
You paid 135 and they served you eel avocado roll???!?!?!?!? That is absurd.
Best homemade stock in a Japanese restaurant?

Anyone have any updates on when and where Ivan Ramen is opening up?
Neta: Ex Masa and Bar Masa Head Chefs Open an Understated Stunner in the West Village
Shirasu Mizuna Chahan looks pretty good.
Shimizu or Kanoyama - 50 to 80USD per person possible?
They have two bars, one in the newer room is for reserved customers doing omakase only . The other bar in the main dining room is for the entire menu.
Midtown Sushi Lunch Recs?
Kurumazushi has a 18 dollar sushi lunch set that is pretty decent.
Sushi West Village
Masatosan from 15 East trained at Sukeroku who's head chef trained with Jiro I think.
uhockey reviews Brushstroke - they'll serve you Fluke and Tuna for $200.....
Uhockey's issues with 15 East arent along those lines. It more along the lines of their email not working and the hostess on the phone not knowing about Omakase. I had a similar incident at another sushi bar, I had to mispronounce/butcher the word omakase wrong in order for the non japanese hostess to understand.
Cotan; the best kept Sushi secret in NYC!
It was always packed. You can walk in on a Tuesday night at 10pm and it was pretty busy. Seems like some generic roll place is taking its place.
