Rt 1 Lynnfield question

It was a Pizzeria Uno for a long time, but before that, it was Michael's Grand Cru.

Speaking of Orzo, I really liked that place and was sorry to see it closed. Remember Blue Moon, in the old Augustine's? And Augustine's was a veritable Boston institution, too -- mediocre Italian, at best, but still fun.

Thumbs Up for the Winthrop Arms

I love the Winthrop Arms! Haven't been in a while and have only been on Sunday. They do an a la carte brunch as well as the regular dinner menu. It's a nice "Sunday dinner" type of restaurant. There's a baked scrod with asparagus dish that I frequently get, as well as some amazing chicken dishes. Prices are very reasonable and cocktails are great (also reasonably priced). I've always managed to find on-street parking myself, but I imagine at night it can be difficult. (wonder where the valets park the cars, anyhow???)

There is still a hotel above the restaurant, and there is an interesting history of the building written on the back of the menu.

Lunch in Stoneham

If you want a casual place, I second the vote for Liberty Bell. Great salads, and an impressive menu of seafood and sandwiches (although I can't vouch for the quality of those).

Gaetanos is great, if you want a sit-down, "nicer" place.

Although Felicia's is good, there is ALWAYS a wait there, even if you have a reservation. They always overbook. Not sure if it's hectic for lunch, too, but for dinner it's insane.

Grimsby's, on the Lynn Fells Parkway, right at the Melrose/Stoneham line, is pretty good. Nothing special, very much like a 99, but it's doable.

Caffe Italia in Wakefield

Glad to see I wasn't the only one! The waitress said it was the same owner and the same chef, but I can't believe it. The food was like night and day compared to the East Boston location. Oh forgot to mention that she made a mistake adding up our bar tab, which I called her on, so of course that further increased her annoyance with us.

I'll stick to Gaetanos from now on!

Caffe Italia in Wakefield

I was eagerly anticipating going to Caffe Italia tonight as I missed it desperately. They closed their East Boston location several months ago and I was thrilled to discover they reopened in Wakefield. Well, this was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I will NEVER go back.

We had a reservation and were seated promptly. It took the waitress over ten minutes to come over for our drink order. We ordered drinks and dinner at the same time. Drinks arrive, I take one sip of mine and it had a funny taste. Can't describe it any other way, but it just tasted off. I called her over and apologized politely, but said it tasted off and could the bartender make another one. Her tone immediately changed -- there went the friendliness! -- and she said okay. She brings another one, I take a sip, same thing. My dining companion suggested I just get a glass of wine instead, which I do. I apologize again (even though it's not my fault you have a terrible bartender!) and the waitress disappears for several minutes, obviously annoyed. I wonder if I'm going to get my wine at all. Finally she reappears with the wine.

The menu has changed considerably from the East Boston days (and gone are the wonderful smells of garlic permeating the restaurant!), but I did find the one pasta dish which was my favorite. It was fettucine with sausage, broccoli rabe, and sundried tomatoes. It was terrible. Bland, overcooked rabe, and the sausage tasted like turkey sausage, not Italian sausage. Caesar salad was good. We finish our meals, order coffee, and then she brings the check. A few minutes later, she comes over and says "Is this all set?" and starts to pick up the billfold. No, we haven't even looked at it. Never asks us if we'd like more coffee, if everything was okay, etc. I always tip 20%, but not to this waitress. Very, very disappointing meal and service.

Yet the restaurant was full. Go figure. I'd like to think that maybe I just hit it on an off night, but I won't go there again.

Any good eats in Malden?

Is Tivoli's still open?? Every time I've gone by there it looks deserted and has no lights on. I found their hours to be very erratic -- it would say they were open on a certain day, but not necessarily so....

Why is Thai food in boston so bad?

I like Sweet Chili's, on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Center.

Cafe Italia -- East Boston

A friend and I went there for dinner Saturday night only to find it's now a Mexican restaurant called La Hacienda! We were shocked. The last time I was there was in January. Even the Cafe Italia II in the Heights is no more (although I never liked that one, anyhow).

I've since been reading on this board that it's been closed for some time and is supposed to be re-opening in Wakefield. Does anyone have any information on that? There's no phone listing and their website still says East Boston and Marblehead.

I'm heartbroken -- that was one of my FAVORITE places!

Favorite Little-Known Italian Restaurant Outside of Boston Proper?

My all-time favorite is still Gaetanos, in Stoneham. I returned there time and time again for the past 13 years. The only thing I had which I didn't like was the chicken marsala (quite surprising). They used chunks of boiled ham instead of prosciutto (which is optional, I know, in a marsala recipe) and the taste was just flat. But considering the hundreds of meals I've had there and this was the only bad one, I consider that a pretty good record. Drinks are excellent and very generous!

Antonia's on Revere Beach--anyone been?

I would never go back there, based on my experience of being towed from in front of the restaurant. They claim they go around warning people before 10 PM that the police start towing, but no one came around to warn us.

My favorite Italian restaurant in that area is Cafe Italia in Central Square in East Boston (not the one in Orient Heights, which has a slightly different menu). Amazing food -- everything cooked to order -- drinks, and desserts. I have never had a bad meal there.

Antonia's on Revere Beach

Anyone been there? I went for the first time last week with some friends, one of whom had been there before. We got a rude surprise when we came out and found our cars TOWED from the boulevard! They claimed they went around to all the tables before 10 PM and warned people to move their cars, as that's when they start towing, but no one came around to us at the bar. A very ugly and expen$ive end to an otherwise nice evening.

Giacomo's N End v. Giacomo's S End

The one in the South End takes reservations AND it is actually possible to find a parking spot somewhere in the area, without taking out a second mortgage to park in a garage.

RED ROCK Bistro in Swampscott

Save your money. I agree with the other posters who say Red Rock Bistro is overpriced. The food is VERY mediocre. I've been there a couple of times and the service doesn't stand out in my mind as either really good or really bad, but the food was nothing I'd go back for. And btw, if you happen to be on Lynn Shore Drive during a low tide, be prepared for some TERRIBLE fish odors...it would make your eyes water, thereby precluding a nice cocktail on the outdoor patio!

North End Dinner for about 8

Rabia's on Salem St. is wonderful. It is very reasonably priced, in comparison to other North End restaurants, AND it is one of the few restaurants which serves dessert and coffee! Most of the other ones don't, as they don't want you to linger...they want you OUT and into the cafes. Rabia's is small, but they enlarged last year and now have another room where I hear they serve sushi. Seems like a strange combination to me -- an Italian/Sushi restaurant -- but what the heck.

The Ship in Lynnfield

Is this a remake of the original Ship restaurant, at the same location? I think it closed in the late 80s-early 90s. There have been a couple of other restaurants there, most recently a Mediterranean restaurant, I believe.

Bambino's Malden... What Happened???

Yup, think it's gone for good. They FINALLY took down that little hand-lettered sign "Temporarily Closed" a few days ago and have taken down the decorations in the window. The number was disconnected several months ago. It's too bad -- I liked the food there, even though sometimes you got a surly waitress!

I like Gaetano's and Felicia's, both in Stoneham. Also went to an AWESOME restaurant in Salem, MA the other night called Bella Verona. It's across the street from the Hawthorne Hotel. Really excellent Northern Italian food, very reasonable prices. Only drawback is no hard liquor - beer and wine only. But you can always have a cocktail at the hotel across the street. It's small, so I would suggest calling for a reservation, especially on a weekend night.
