What is "dinner"?

Thanks to all who've replied. Some interesting thoughts and I always find it fascinating what are other people's takes on things I take for granted (consider "normal").

It all makes me wonder about specifically what people are eating for dinner. Will and mels posts got me thinking about what exactly different cultures eat at those meals. I am very familiar with what most American eat and the course structure, ditto French and Italian.

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows about, say, what Laotians eat for dinner and if there is a course structure. Or Germans or Senegalese or Danes or Uzbeks...anyone. Thanks.

What is "dinner"?

What doe we mean when we talk about dinner (or supper to some)? For Americans dinner usually is a protein w/some starch and vegetables. In other countries it may mean something totally different.

For example, to a friend of mine, dinner is usually meat, a starch or 2, and a non-green leaf vegetable. When we go eat, say, Korean food for dinner, he gets a little thrown-off. The courses coming at random times, the lack of bread, no dessert befuddles him. I'm interested in learning about other culture's ideas on dinner, what it means, what they eat and drink, how important a meal it is (as opposed to other meals in the day). Please share your knowledge w/me.

will we need reservations...?

Visiting Boston for 1st time next weekend (and enjoying all the info here!). 2 questions:

-will we need reservations at most North End restaurants on Thursday night (5/21)?

-will we need reservations at Neptune Oyster on Saturday night?

Thanks in advance!

Recommendation for Father's Day in Baltimore?

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! Gertrude's and Petit Louis look especially promising. Thank you!

Recommendation for Father's Day in Baltimore?

We need a good restaurant in Baltimore for a Father's Day lunch. After reading these boards, we tried The Bicycle, but they are not open that day for lunch. Our #1 priority is good food, but a view is nice as well. Please help! Thanks.
