Bad service in the Twin Cities [Moved from MSP board]
Travail is the french word for work. Non?
Copper River Salmon
Wow. I paid $29.99/lb yesterday at my Whole Foods in Minneapolis for some excellent Copper River Salmon. Funny it should be cheaper here considering the distance it needs to travel.
Any great soup in the Twin Cities?
When I am in the mood for soup, I head to Surdyk's cheese shop.
MSP: "Best" Grocery Store
Sentyrz in NE Mpls sells booze in the store...not separate. It has been in business long before the no-booze-in-grocery-store law and it got grandfathered in. However, I would in no way call it the best grocery in MPLS food-wise. Although you can buy a NE Mpls t-shirt in the freezer aisle. And their bacon and sausages are pretty good.
Where to eat...Guthrie Theater/Minneapolis???
While I wholeheartedly agree with you about how sublime the food is at Sea Change, but it is one of the most expensive restaurants in town and the the above mentioned teens will HATE it, so a total waste of money in this case. I think Whiteys is a great call, as well as the Bulldog, or how about the Anchor? Not that far away on NE 13th off of University..
Does anyone know where I could get frozen all-butter puff pastry? [msp]
I really like Dufour's puff pastry, available at Whole Foods (frozen). It is expensive, but it is worth it.
Uptown Minneapolis Lunches
Welcome to Uptown! I have worked in this neighborhood for 13 years and the lunch options leave a lot to be desired. I bring my lunch, eat at Lucia's or the Tin Fish. Believe me, I have tried every other place in the area and none are great. There are some restaurants that are not mentioned that serve lunch...the Uptown Bar, Chang Mai Thai, Amazing Thailand, You can get Galactic Pizza, Red's Savoy and Caffrey's to deliver. There is a Punch Pizza a short drive away in Calhoun Village, Rustica bakery is supposed to open there soon. Also, not what I would consider lunch, but if you need a carb/sugar fix, there is Isles Buns and Coffee.
Steven Brown gone from Porter and Frye [msp]
Bon Apetit sold Cue to Culinaire who has hired Tim McKee. They take over in April. Word is it will be a fish focused restaurant.
Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again
It was called Wapatooey (not sure of the proper spelling) where I went to college in MN. Uff da!
MSP - dog friendly places
A little out of your way but Lucia's in uptown is very dog friendly, with very good, mostly locally sourced food.

2008 MN State Fair
O'Gara's in the food building. I tried it last year, because I too thought it sounded heart-stoppingly good. I hate corndog/pronto pup type things and that is what the reuben on a stick is...a sausage with rye breading that one dips in 1000 island dressing. Disappointment.
However I LOVE the State Fair, can't wait to try some bacon on a stick...
Sea Salt (MSP)
I too had a bad experience at Sea Salt last summer and will never go back. The place was dirty, the oysters were warm and not fresh, in fact inedible and should not have been served. When this was brought to an employee's attention, all I got was a shrug. I was embarrassed as I had friends from New York with me and wanted to impress them with some Minneapolis food and atmosphere. That did not happen at Sea Salt.
Brunchquest 2008: Jax Cafe (MSP)
Love your post! We take the in-laws when they are in town to the Jax brunch for a "taste of Minnesota". I love that it has not changed at all. I like to have a couple of Bloody Mary's with my brunch and just soak in the atmosphere.
Restaurants near 38th and Madison Ave.
oh, and what about the 2nd Ave Deli? Now located on 3rd & 33rd?
Restaurants near 38th and Madison Ave.
How about Artisinal on Park between 32nd & 33rd? Cheese, glorious cheese!
What is minneapolis's signature dish?
Your margarita comment (so true!) reminded me that MN is the only place I have seen bloody marys served with a beer back.
So where's the **%$!!* Dark Meat?
I love a chicken drumstick and thigh--the best part of the bird, imo. I think that in some parts of the US, dark meat is considered low class.
How much is too much to pay for a beer?
I don't know how much is too much, but hops shortage + rise in fuel cost = pay more for beer :(
Best 4AM after a night of drinking meal?
Sliders & Alka Seltzer....always Alka Seltzer.
MSP-Baconsalt
I adore the Vosges bacon chocolate bar! You are right, so flavorful and satisfying that one or two squares will satisfy my chocolate craving. I am very curious about this bacon salt.
Why Did My Sauce Break?
When you added the cream the sauce was too hot, so a temperature thing. I've done that :(
Buying Truffle Oil in Twin Cities
I swear I have seen it in the deli section at the Byerly's in St Louis Park. You might want to call first. I also love this combo, but I substitute truffle salt for the oil out of thrift.
What is your region famous for?
Pronto pups have a flour based coating, corn dogs have a cornmeal based coating. I hate them both.
What is your region famous for?
Duh!
Although I have only been to smorgasbords where I grew up in Seattle.
Good perogies are sold in the catholic churches in NE Mpls.
and I should add Walleye to the list, I can't believe I forgot that.
STEAK IN MINNEAPOLIS: MANNY'S OR MURRAY'S?
If I had to choose between the two I would say Manny's. I like the bone-in ribeye and they cook it perfectly. The hash brown are drenched in butter and are pretty tasty. I prefer to sit in the bar, nice and dark in there. The few times I have been to Murray's I was not impressed with the food. The best steak place in the twin cities, albeit not traditional like Manny's and Murray is The Strip Club in St.Paul, imo.
MPLS-St. Anthony main restaurant & concert
If you don't mind walking about 6 blocks, you could go to Brasa which is tasty and reasonably priced.
What is your favorite cookbook of all time?
The first cookbook I ever purchased and still one of my favorites. Love!
Buttering beef while cooking... do you?
I don't think one can properly cook steak in butter, at least the way I like it done--seared over very high heat and then finished in the oven-rare. The butter would burn. I do like a seasoned butter plopped on the top the minute it is done. mmmm. The steak in france is often served with a pat of butter on the top-delish! This is not like the Ruth Chris steak that is absolutely drowning in butter (unflavored at that) which is really off-putting imo. I wonder for those who like steak cooked on the more well-done side if basting in butter would keep the meat moist? Has anyone tried this?
Best Seattle Oyster Bar?
Thanks for this tip! I will be visiting the family in WS this summer and will have to make Ama Ama a "must".
