challenge: cheap dinner for 6 this saturday?

I'd try Bamiyan (Third Avenue at 26th Street). Aghan restaurant, good, reasonable food with lots of vegetarian options. You can sit at the low tables, and there's optional hookah smoking in the back.

Savory Trifle?

I love this idea. My immediate thought was a version of Panzanella (bread salad), with lots of bread, tomatoes and mozzarella. You could add in pancetta or Speck for texture. I might have to try it!

Babbo substitute for 50th birthday

How about Locanda Verde? http://locandaverdenyc.com/

Delicious food in a fun, casual atmosphere with a little star power as well!

Jazzing up Beef Stew

If you want something very different, try this Moroccan braised beef: easy and delicious.

Dinner near Kleinfeld's (Chelsea/Flatiron)

I like Boqueria Tapas Bar, on 19th just east of 6th Avenue.

Loads of ganache!

Turn it into hot fudge sauce? Or freeze it into small bits for ice cream mix-ins. You can see that I have ice cream on the brain!

Funniest Thing a Server Said to You

In Manhattan, where we live, shortly after we sat down: "Do you want sparkling water or Bloomberg water?"

Bloomberg water = tap water delivered by New York City.

Knockout cake recipe needed

I made this white cake for my daughter's wedding last summer and have made it many times since (and as mini cupcakes as well). It holds up well, and freezes beautifully.

I'm pretty sure they sell them at Fairway.

Random Funny Food Memories

I told my then-four-year-old daughter that we would be getting pizza for dinner.

She heard me pick up the phone and say, "I'd like to order two pies."

She then proceded to scream, as only a four-year-old can, "I don't want pie for dinner...I want pizza!"

I have recently fallen in love with Polenta

I just made lasagne using polenta instead of lasagne. Spread hot polenta into a layer, bechamel, then meat sauce and a little parmesan, repeat. Fabulous (and gluten free!).

Store-bought Chutney?

Trader Joe's makes a really good mango chutney.

18th Birthday- Something "Fun"?

There's a fun and not-too-expensive Moroccan restaurant on City Avenue: http://www.casablancarestaurants.com/

You can get a private area, and belly dancing!

Thanksgiving - your BEST side dishes

I love this recipe for Brussels Sprouts and Pearl Onions in a Horseradish Cream Sauce from Epicurious.

Does one have to serve dessert at a dinner party?

Sometimes I'll just make a very rich hot chocolate for dessert. Satisfies almost everyone.

Second Kitchens

My old house in Teaneck had one, too. With the required pink appliances.

Where to find Vanilla beans in Philly or MainLine area?

The Head Nut in Havertown.

Wedding Mini-Dessert Buffet

Thanks everyone for your ideas! There will definitely be plates and napkins, so a dipping sauce with fresh fruit is a great idea. I'll also be keeping some sort of cheesecake bite on the list...it's the groom's favorite.

Wedding Mini-Dessert Buffet

My daughter is getting married in July and I'm baking all of the desserts for a buffet. It's a casual, indoor/outdoor wedding, without a lot of refrigeration available.

I'm a good baker and here is the beginning of my list. I'd ultimately like to have about a dozen different choices.

Coconut macarrons
Flourless chocolate cupcakes
Assortment of mini cupcakes (carrot cake,
Frozen cheesecake pops
Key lime tarts
Peach tarts
Baklava cups
Lemon squares
Cinammon shortbread bars
Saltine butter crunch
Pecan tarts
Truffles

Chowhounds, please send me your very best suggestions for a fabulous assortment of miniature desserts (looking for yummy and bite-sized, nothing that needs to be sliced and served).

Thanks in advance. Can't wait to hear your ideas.

Best little rich dessert that can be served in a lil glass cup!

How about a trifle? The layers would look beautiful.

Suggestions for flourless chocolate cake or chocolate mousse?

I've been making these flourless chocolate cupcakes for a few years; they're divine. I don't use the frosting they suggest. I make mini ones and they're a little bite of heaven: http://www.cupcakeproject.com/2008/04/kosher-for-passover-chocolate-cupcakes.html

Also, a flourless chocolate pear torte: http://curiouslyravenous.blogspot.com/2008/02/flourless-chocolate-pear-torte.html

And, here's a thread from last year with a similar request:

Help, please! Looking for a fun place to have food/drinks with large group (not a sit down meal)

I like Vermilion, at Lex and 47th. http://www.thevermilionrestaurant.com/ny/index_ny.htm

Rita's Water Ice -- Upper West Side

So excited! I've been craving a mango gelati since we moved back to New York.

Birthday dinner for 10 year old boy

As others said, I love Madangsui for Korean food. Or Joe's Shanghai (there's one on W 56th Street) for soup dumplings.

Road trip assistance

I recommend stopping at Woody's Crab House in Northeast, Maryland, which is just off 95. Cute little town with antiques stores.

Anything with 8 ingredients to represent figure eights.

Most complicated and impossible recipe you know

My vote: Turducken!

What's your cheap, low-class, won't-usually-tell kitchen favorite?

Plastic clothespins from the dollar store. I use them to close any kind of bag, to clip recipes to the refrigerator, etc.

Potluck Dinner Party Help?

I'm a big fan of this Moroccan-style beef stew. Easy to make, and always better the next day. I serve with either pearl couscous or basmati rice.

Saag Chicken - any advice?

How about lite coconut milk instead?
