Lunch near Maui Airport?

Aloha -

Heading to Maui next week and arrive right at lunch time. Looking for a good place to grab something to eat before we hit Costco and the Natural Food Market. Used to be a great Cuban place nearby but i believe they closed. Open to all types of food - some place that you can sit down (inside or outside), trucks OK if there are benches.

Any great finds at Costco lately? On Kauai we got great poke, ahi, hawaiian soda and local salsa.

Maui: Gannon's, new Alan Wong, Merriman's, Haile Maile...decisions!

Thanks so much! These are exactly the places I
Love and I agree with your assessments. Kihei caffe
Was a favorite for us last trip as well. Will try monkeypod, Eskimo candy (love
Poke) and the shave ice place. Did u try 808 deli or bistro?

Maui: Gannon's, new Alan Wong, Merriman's, Haile Maile...decisions!

Aloha -

Heading to Maui in a few weeks and staying near Wailea. Last time we were there (four years ago) we loved Haile Maile General Store for an upscale meal and places like 808 deli, Paia Fish Market, Sansei Sushi (yes it is just big rolls but it was great at 50% off!) and other less $$$ places for other meals.

This time we have a kid with us but are bringing the grandparents and have promised ourselves two fancy dinners. A lot has changed in four years - lots of additions to the market. So feedback on Gannon's vs Haile Maile vs Merriman's vs Amasia (alan wong)? Or if there is a place you like better than all of those let me know. Gannon's is very close for us (we are staying on the golf course) but I haven't seen much talk about it on this board. I like seafood and playful, interesting farm to table concepts. My partner likes meat and we both like cocktails (though we can get those anyplace).

Also if any of these fancy spots are just as good as/better for lunch than dinner we could do that.

I went ahead and made reservations for the new Alan Wong place at the Grand Wailea based on his star power and place in Honolulu. And the fear that waiting might mean being out of luck. But we can cancel if it turns out to be all fluff. Also they don't post prices but i am assuming it will be similar to Honolulu (around $100 for a tasting menu no drinks or extras). If anyone goes, please report back!

And of course other recs welcomed as well as always.

Mahalo!

Also heard 808 deli has a new bistro. Anybody been? We did Cafe O'lei last time - it was a good value but didn't blow me away.

Two meals in sgv. Please help!

We are in the IE visiting family for a week. Usually
Plenty of time to eat lots of dumplings, noodles, dim
Sum and the like in sgv. But this time heading to San Diego for part
Of week so not so much noodling time.

So two daytime meals in the sgv. What do you think?
Typically we eat at mei long, dtf, the other dumplings
Place in the plaza with mei long for dumplings and noodles.
For dim sum we prefer the menu places. But there is
So much we haven't tried! So need help on what is good right now and
Where to spend my precious tummy time.

Low or no msg is a plus but whatever. It's two great
Meals. I'll swell up like a balloon for that if needed.

Thanks chowers!

Easy stop for Thursday lunch in PDX?

Hi everyone -

Heading down the the wine country on Thursday and want to stop for lunch in PDX. Probably avoid downtown/pearl district as will be heading back to PDX for Sat and Sunday and staying at Hotel Deluxe (eating at Wildwood, Oba or Gruner, some places for lunch...)

So looking for something easy to get to off the highway that is really good. Have thought about the food carts up north (garden state, sugar cube...) but may want a sit down instead. Anything great up north/down south for lunch that we just shouldn't miss?

Thanks!

Dundee Wine Passport Event - Hit or Miss?

Hi everyone -

I also posted this to the general Pacific Northwest board but haven't received any replies, so thought i would try here.

My partner and i are planning a four day getaway to Portland and the Willamette Valley in April. It just so happens that the weekend we were planning to be in the willamette is the "dundee wine passport" event.

Has anyone been to this event before? I'm trying to figure out if it will be as crowded as thanksgiving weekend (which we stopped attending because of all the tour buses). If so, we will change our days around, though it won't be as optimal timing for us. But if you can still get to the tasting rooms without being crushed by the crowds, we'll go as planned.

Thanks so much!

Dundee Wine Passport Event - Hit or Miss

Hi everyone -

My partner and i have planned a four night trip to Portland and the Willamette Valley in April. In researching which wineries will be open, I stumbled across an event notification for the "Dundee Passport" Wine event which happens to correspond with our trip dates. Has anyone been to this event before?

I am excited at the prospect that some smaller Dundee wineries may be open that weekend but am worried about crowds. We stopped going at Thanksgiving because the tour buses just made things crazy. If it's busy on that scale we will probably rearrange our dates to avoid it.

If anyone has an experience to share, please let me know!

Thank you!

Kauai Trip Report - May 2010

I really appreciate your trip report. Are there any places that made your google map (that you wanted to visit) but didn't make your report?

Seattle Visit, Foodie Parents, 2 Kids Not So Much

Oh and Monsoon in Capitol Hill would be a fabulous night out and they are kid friendly (enough anyway) esp if you go early. They have wonderful seafood.

Seattle Visit, Foodie Parents, 2 Kids Not So Much

Also Tamarind Tree has a second restaurant downtown - Longs. It is near 2nd and Stewart. The menu is a little different than TT but very very good and plenty of kid friendly stuff (they will do plain noodles or noodles with chicken broth or whatever you need). Nishino does get good press for sushi though i prefer Mashiko is West Seattle. They are very kid friendly (esp if you go early). My son loves their udon noodles. Top Pot donuts is great - the closest ones to you will be downtown (near Cinerama on 5th) or the one on Capitol Hill. And for a fancy night out i always recommend Zoe in Belltown. I've been many times over the years and i always have a fabulous meal (and they have a great bar as well). Not so much a kid place though. Have a marvelous trip!

Any Philly Cheesesteak's in SEA worth trying?

Hey Paison! in Burien. Seriously. And if you get your fill of Cheesesteak and Tastycakes, they also have the best meatball hoagie I've had on the West Coast. And the best grinders. Dang i'm hungry for lunch now.

Morrisville area (including Cary/Durham) dinner rec for family

Hello everyone -

Traveling to the Triangle soon and staying at the Fairfield Inn in Morrisville. Need a dinner rec for a friday night for a group of six adults and one kid (who is very very adverturous in eating and well behaved in food situations). Looking for a place that can fit a group (happy to make a reservation if needed) but also has really yummy food. Not too high end or fancy.

We like everything but no chains and prob not asian (as we do tons of that in seattle) or bbq (some of the folks are from austin and bbqed out). Some of the places that were reccomended here and on yelp:

Saffron Indian
Tower Indian
Bosphorus
The Federal (can you bring kids?)
Baba Ghannouj Bistro
Shree Udupi

Any comments or other suggestions? I am also posting about recs in general on another post as we have a couple days in the Triangle before heading to the beach.

Thanks!

Richmond dim sum - Friday or Sunday afternoon

Hey hounders -

Will be heading across the border to visit folks in Vancouver on Friday, heading home on Sunday. Want to make a stop in Richmond for great dim sum either on the way there (lunch Friday) or way back (mid afternoon Sunday). I've searched the board and lots of places are mentioned but looking for a place that will be easy to get to, no long lines (have a preschooler with me) and will be open those dates/times.

Suggestions appreciated! I am fine with either cart or menu service and any price range. What ever is best!

Also, any good bubble tea recs (using real tea not powder) greatly appreciated!

Seeking a store with a nice tea selection in Seattle

Please check out Remedy Teas on 15th. Really great quality and amazing selection. Also they always sample a few teas a day and you can try anything by the cup to see if you like it before buying in bulk. Plus the goodies are SOOOO yummy (and somewhat healthy or at least organic!). I am addicted to this place!

High Tea

This is a little unusual but i do recommend the tea services at Remedy Teas on 15th in North Capitol Hill. They do amazing teas (100s to choose from, each prepared properly) with organic sandwhiches, cookes, etc. This is not classic high tea but incredibly yummy and inventive. They also have a kids high tea that is wonderful. And no i don't work for them - i just LOVE tea!

Good food around Zilker, the zoo, and UT campus?

Do you know the name or location of the spray park? I've tried searching the parks depart but just get a big list of parks. Any other good kid parks, esp around central or south austin? Other than Zilker of course.

Good food around Zilker, the zoo, and UT campus?

First, chowhounders are so great. Really. I have so many yummy places i'd love to eat in Austin next week (and Lockhart). However, i have no idea what is near what and realized i should prioritize depending on the types of things we will be doing during the day.

So i could use some help - we'll be doing lots of outdoor stuff with a three year old - Zilker, the zoo (maybe), prob UT campus (also open to ideas and parks to check out) ... what is good near these places?

My long list includes lots of carts, mexican, texmex, bbq, paletas - stuff open during the day is really helpful. Planning to make it to Odd Duck and East Side King but those will prob be the only night stuff we can do with the kid.

And we are going to try and watch the bats one night - good place to pick up to-go for a picnic dinner while we wait?

Also is there anything to see/do in Lockhart in addition to BBQ? And someone mentioned the town of Wimberly as a side trip in another thread - is this worth a little trip?

Good farmers markets or flea markets around?

Lots of questions! Thanks for recs!

Paletas?

My son LOVES popsicles so while we are visiting Austin at the end of March, I promised him we would find some good ones. Any paleta shops or carts that are reccomended? I'm thinking of locopops in Raleigh type places....or if any locally made ones are sold at markets...

Thanks!

Austin eating with kid in tow - recs needed!

Thanks MK Foodie! I was wondering about the East Side Kings trailer specifically.

Austin eating with kid in tow - recs needed!

Hey all -

Am traveling to Austin from Seattle for a little less than a week visit and want to do a lot of eating. Particularly stuff that Austin does really well and Seattle does not like bbq, mexican, southwest/tex mex, and anything else very Austin. Gotta have a couple cart experiences as well as Seattle zoning has crushed whatever small cart scene we had here.

But there is one issue - the three year old. I've browsed the board and it seems that alot of recs center around bars or are behind bars or have "bar" in the title. I am fine bringing the kid to a bar but am assuming that wouldn't fly.

I don't need dummed down food or chicken fingers or anything - the kid is awesome at trying new stuff and if not, i always cart around tons of suitable snacks. Just need great recs that are OK for a kid, are open daytime hours or early dinner, and no fine dining (other people don't need to pay $$$ to hear my kid make scatological jokes in a very outside voice).

We will have a car and so can go anyplace though recs near places we will probably go with the kid are also appreciated (like Zilker, the lake, the zoo etc).

Oh and are there any good popsicle type places around (like Loco Pops in NC)? Also great aqua fresca and horchata (not just powdered mix stuff)? Oh and great coffee.

Thanks for the recs!!

Lark closed on Sundays - need VDay help!

Thanks! I hadn't noticed the event listing. I think i will skip it given that all the things i like on the menu require a significant supplement (extra cash) in addition to the base cost. Plus looks like Licorous is still closed - sniff. So still looking for other options.

Wish i had a sitter for the champagne event on Saturday!

Lark closed on Sundays - need VDay help!

Howdy hounds -

Finally, after a very long dry spell my partner and i secured a babysitter for valentines day. Her request was to go to Lark and Licorous which we love and suits our needs well. We love cocktails and good food that can be shared.

Well i was very sad when i realized that Lark is closed on Sundays. And now i need another plan.

I am looking for a place in Central Seattle (Capitol Hill, Downtown, Belltown) or possibly West Seattle for dinner on Valentine's Day. Yes, i know i'll need a res and hope to get one - we eat very early so hopefully that will help.

Need cocktails. Need to be able to order off a menu (not just a prix fix thing). Need really good food that can be shared.

Places i have considered include Tin Table (but worry about the food part), Quinn's, Zoe, Palace Kitchen, Spring Hill (but kind of bad service reviews on yelp), La Spiga (but think they only have a vday menu)....

Any brilliant ideas out there? BTW, i did consider A&O but have been twice and was kindof "meh" about it both times.

Thanks in advance for the ideas.

New in the SGV? (dumpling, noodle, dim sum, non-asian?)

I come down to the Claremont area once or twice a year to visit inlaws and always spend a couple days in the SGV eating. Coming so infrequently makes it hard to keep a pulse on what is new, interesting, closed or slipped in quality.

Mainly i focus on Chinese (wide i know) - but noodles, dumplings and dim sum. Not Sichuan (as my partner can't do super spicy) but anything else is good. I have relied on posts in the pasts and had great experiences.

My favorite recent-ish meals included:

Noodle House (in old location - i saw on the board that it moved) LOVED this
Mei Long great XLB
some other dumpling house that is in same strip as Mei Long i think also good XLB
For dimsum we've always gone to a place by in-laws like - might be 888 - in a mall right next to a large Vietnamese place on the corner (has cart service) - very good but not in the top league i think

So where should i try this time? It's hard not to go back to Noodle House. I've seen Elite and Sea Harbor are listed as "best" dim sum - any cart service that is in a top tier?

I've seen Kam Hong Garden and Giang Nan listed recently - of course they look great as well but hard to decide.

I can hit a few places if they are close proximity to one another so if you have a "crawl" in mind let me know. Or stand alone places are fine too.

Also i had heard in the past about Babita's. Is that still good - worth a trip? Also Wahib's gets good press but again - we are in Claremont so anything is a drive.

Feel free to refer me to threads - you get so much under a SGV search.

Thank you thank you thank you. Plus it's my birthday this time while i visit so i reserve the right to try three places on one trip. I will wear the stretchy pants.

BorntoEat

ps We always go to Fosselmans for something sweet after dim sum. If you have a different or interesting sweet option let me know. I also love real brewed tea bubble tea but always end up at lollicups because i know where they are.

Long Beach Aquarium - lunch?

Hey hounds -

Am traveling to visit in-laws in Claremont this weekend. Unfortunately the IE is not a food mecca. But i love eating in the SGV and LA when possible. We will be heading to the Long Beach Aquarium one day and i'm looking for good food recs in the area. I am thinking lunch, as well as snacky stuff (coffee, bakeries, dessert) or maybe an early dinner.

Type of cuisine - nothing is off limits. I'd love some good Mexican as i have YET in all my visits to the in-laws found anything i think is spectacular. And i'm from Seattle so it's not that hard to impress me. Sad huh? But anything else you think is good - let me know. One caveat, we will have the three year old with us - so no place fancy or that is super slow.

Thanks in advance for the recs. I'll be posting separately re: any new finds in SGV or maybe, just maybe, decent food in the Inland Empire.

[SEA] Take-out on way to Alki?

So our one other option for beating the heat tonight is to pick up some take-out or picnic stuff and head to Alki. Will be coming over the West Seattle Bridge. Any good places to stop on the way (or once we are there)?

Thanks!

[SEA] Air conditioning in the ID?

Hey everyone -

I am craving noodles for dinner (pref Vietnamese but i am open) but need a place with AC for the toddler. My guess is that most of the places i frequent don't have AC as i remember open doors at times. Does Taramind Tree have AC?

Can't believe i have to even think about needing AC! Crazy global warming...

Emerald Isle NC area good eats?

Anyone been to the sushi place in Morehead City (I think it's called California Roll)...

Good reviews on one of the tourism sites but would rather get an opinion from a chowhound.

Emerald Isle NC area good eats?

Good point about the cooking. Thanks for the rec on the produce - we do mainly like to cook while there as well. If we lived closer we would love to have a place in the area as well - glad you are enjoying it!
