Studio City Recommendations?

Anyone have any recommendations on a great restaurant in Studio City? We're open on the kind of food...pretty much like everything...just something not too expensive.

Sur...what a disappointment!

We went out to Sur in WeHo last night with 4 friends and what a disappointment. It was our first time and we had really high hopes. The interior was beautiful and the tables in a very nice, intimate setting but the food was less than memorable. I had the Lobster cakes and they were comparable to the hushpuppies I would get at Long John Silvers. Others at the table had the beet salad, soups and calamari which they said were good but were disappointed by the lack of imaginative options. For entree I had the lamb chops with carrots and brussel sprouts. Although I ordered it medium rare, it came out medium. The waiter dropped the plate and ran off not to be seen again for probably close to 30 minutes. I would have sent it back if I could have only found someone to give it to. 2 others at the table had the veal and said it was ok at best. No one ordered dessert because the food was so iffy. The service was marginal and more like something you'd see at Denny's. We orderd our food and litterally within minutes the appetizers arrived. After eating the appetizers and the final dish was cleared, our entrees arrived within seconds. So much for a relaxing dinner. We were so looking forward to trying Sur because we'd never been there before but I can say we'll never go back. Food comparable to fast food, overcooked food, rushed service....why spend the money here when there's so many other good places to go in LA.

Half priced menus

I wasn't aware that all Dolce restaurants offered the 50% rate on certain days. Thanks! We went to Ketchup on Sunday and the place was packed. Most young trendy types. When seated, we were told of the 50% discount special right upfront but there was no insert in the menu promoting it. I can't say everyone was also told when they were seated but we were.

Great venue for pre-dinner cocktails tonight?

We are going out for a birthday dinner tonight at 8:00 and would like to find a really cool place to go to beforehand for a cocktail or two. Dinner is in West Hollywood so something not too far would be great. Any suggestions?

Half priced menus

Does anyone know of any good restaurants that are offering half off on their menus or other good reduced price menu deals? I know Mark's on La Cienega has 50% of their menu on Mondays but would also like to hear of others. Thanks Chowhounders!

Cool and cheap place for Thanksgiving dinner?

We're looking for a cool, casual and inexpensive place in the Hollywood, WeHo, Silver Lake area for great Thanksgiving dinner. A traditional menu would be great but we're open. My partner's 21 year old son and his girlfriend are coming to visit for the Holiday so something they'd enjoy would be great. Please help as I have no clue where to go! Thanks!

Best desserts

I would love to find the best bakery in town for desserts (hopefully in the Hollywood, West Hollywood, Studio City area). Mainly looking for excellent cakes, pies, pasteries and/or small desserts to serve at an upcoming house party. Not looking to spend a fortune but still would like something utterly delicious. Thanks!

Happy Hour - West Hollywood

Lola's changes their HH food menu periodically. I've been there several times with co-workers and friends and I've never heard anyone complain about the food or its quality. Again the menu changes regularly but in the past, I've seen sliders (VERY good!), calamari with a soy/honey drizzle, hot spinach/artichoke dip and fresh made pizza. They usually have some sort of individual pizza on the menu and it's always been good. One time the tomato based sauce was delicious and another time they used an alfredo sauce instead which was equally good.

Happy Hour - West Hollywood

The Belmost is a good suggestion but I've found it can be a little loud and crowded depending what time you're actually there. The food is good though and happy hour prices are good too. I like Lola's on Fairfax. they have $5 martinis and other drink specials. Their happy hour food menu is creative, good and very reasonably priced.

Healthy dessert recipes

Actually both if possible. My partner has a major sweet tooth but we really try to eat healthy (low fat, low cholestrol). I'm trying to get him the dessert satisfaction he's looking for while also trying to keep it as healthy as possible.

Healthy dessert recipes

Does anyone have any good but healthy dessert recipes? I've tried several over the years that were low fat and found them to be tasteless and flat. I'm looking for cake, cookie and pie recipes mostly and if they include chocolate or lemon, even better!

Hollywood Delivery

Thanks to all that posted! We've tried the Bossa Nova in WeHo but not the one on Sunset. We liked it a lot! Also checked out LaLa's for the first time last weekend and that was great too. Tasty sangria but I doubt they'll deliver that !

Had a friend at work talk about a place called Jones that was on Melrose (maybe?) right near Highland. I thought she said it was Italian though so might be a different place. Anyway, she said she loved it.

STK West Hollywood: Review with Pics

Great review. We loved STK when we went! I agree that the reviews I read were spotty at best and we almost didn't go as a result but I'm really glad we did. Obviously the steaks melted like butter in your mouth but I didn't like the sauces. The tuna tartar appetizer was excellent as the crackling soup was also very good (sorry, can't remember the name of it). Wine list was great, cocktails were great and our server was awesome...very personable and knew the menu inside and out. One of the big complaints I heard was rude and disinterested staff which was clearly not what we encountered. I would encourage anyone interested to check it out. It's worth it.

Hollywood Delivery

We live in Hollywood very close to The Bowl off Cahuenga. Anyone have suggestions on GREAT places for delivery pizza, subs/hoagie's, wings, etc.? We've had Village Pizza and loved it. Also open to other food too...not just pizza. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Best Happy Hour and Appetizers

My partner and I love meeting on Thursdays after work for happy hour when we can. Any suggestions in the Hollywood, West Hollywood, Hancock Park, Beverly Hills areas that have a really good happy hour with good cheap drinks and food? Something that runs a little later than the typical 6:00pm ending time would be nice too. We enjoy the $5 martini's at Lola's and their appetizers are good but we'd like to try something new. We're open to all kinds of food. Thanks all!!

Good Polish Food?

I miss good Polish food like my mother and grandmothers would cook. Do they boil or fry their pierogies? Any of them serve kielbasa soup or duck blood soup? I can't spell the Polish name for the dessert but in English we called them Angel Wings. Loved those too. My mother used to make City Chicken too (cubed pork on wooden skewars, breaded and fried). YUM!

Good restaurants around Sunset 5

Every time I drive by The Griddle on a Saturday or Sunday morning, there are TONS of people waiting outside to get it. It must be good for people to wait that long!

Have any Chowhound Faves Broken Your Heart

You can see my post on Ketchup from the other day. Horrible staff attitude and average food at best. Definitely not worth your time.

I think Lucky Devils has one of the best hamburgers I've ever tried but it's definitely not your run of the mill hamburger. Kobe beef definitely tastes very different from ground beef and you certainly pay for it too (although I don't think $12 is bad for a Kobe burger). For a good, old fashioned type burger, I like Hamburger Mary's in WeHo. That's a good, big burger for you!

Sushi Restaurants

I'm not sure where you'll be when in LA but if you venture to the Valley, we like Teru Sushi on Ventura Blvd in Studio City. People also rave about the original Katsu-ya also on Ventura Blvd but I didn't like it as much as Teru. The best that I've had so far is Geisha House in Hollywood. VERY good sushi, great atmosphere, great service...I highly recommend it.

Good (& reasonably priced) French

We relocated to LA a few months ago from Atlanta and are enjoying our time exploring this great city. When it comes to food, our weakness is French but more often than not, it's VERY pricey and sometimes just not that great given the prices charged. (For anyone who knows Atlanta, our favorite was Babette's Cafe...yum!) If anyone has any suggestions on where to try, it would be greatly appreciated. We'd also love to hear your favorite menu items too if you have any!

Ketchup

Well guys/girls, I wanted to pass along my experience at Ketchup from last Saturday night. Our table wasn't ready when we (along with our guests) arrived so we opted to the bar for a cocktail to pass the time. Although it's not unusual sometimes to deal with attitude from staff when visiting a trendy hotspot restaurant, I was extremely shocked by what we encountered at Ketchup. The bar staff was so extremely rude I couldn't believe it. The guy behind the bar actually got into an arguement with one of my guests over the kind of Vodka he ordered with his drink. The bartender heard something differnet than what my guest actually ordered and refused to admit his mistake. The last time I checked, I don't think it's good for business for anyone on staff to go on for 3-5 minutes arguing with a guest over something so trivial as one's choice of Vodka. I actually had to tell the bartender to be quiet and to quit arguing with my guest. We should have left but our table was ready so we reconsidered. Although the manager said he'd comp our appertizers, he never did. I have to say our dinner server was great and the food was ok. Just beware of going here and be careful who you take with you. Personally, I don't think I'll ever go back. There's must too many options in LA to be treated like this.

Anyone else have a similar experience there or was I just the lucky one?
