Wine Tasting/tour/wine buying

Hello!

My husband and I are visiting Paris from 2/20-2/25.We are not wine novices, however, we do not know a lot about French wine. We would like to learn more, visit some wine bars and shops and purchase some wine--maybe a case or two.

There a re a lot of "wine tasting" tours--but they look a little cheesy. Has anyone had good experiences with them?

Or, better yet, does any one know a private tour we can hire?

Or should I just be brave and figure it out on my own?

Thank you!

European toaster with inner basket?

On a recent Italian show on the Cooking Channel, I saw a guy use his "European" style toaster. Basically it's a normal toaster but has a little basket that fits in the place where you put the bread. This allows the user to put all different kinds and sizes of bread in the toaster without having to fish the product out with a fork.

I really, really want one of these! But, I've looked all over and I can't find anything like it. Any suggestions?

Near the Brooklyn Museum of Art

Can't you just be helpful? The Brooklyn Museum is walking distance to Park Slope. Tons of great eats. Search that term.

Your Favorite NYC restaurant?

Impossible! But I love Union Square Cafe, Cafe Boulud, Patsy's Pizza, Artisanal and the Art Bar. For Personal reasons ;)

INEXPENSIVE Mexican in NYC?

Toloache in Times Square is one of the best Mexican eateries in the city, and reasonably priced. Check out this NY Times article from last year. I've been to all these place and they are good.

Farm, Bottega or Cyrus?

HI All--Will be in Napa 3 nights. Unfortunately French Laundry will be closed while we are in the area. That being said, I currently have reservations at Ad Hoc and Terra. We are torn between the following restaurants: Farm, Bottega or Cyrus. We were going to go to Cyrus, but we are staying in Yountville and the evening drive seems excessive. What do Bay Area hounds think?

NY Foodies--3 nights in SF. Will exchange for NY recs!

Thanks everyone!

NY Foodies--3 nights in SF. Will exchange for NY recs!

My husband and I will be in SF from 7/20 to 7/23. So far, we think we are going to Ozumo, maybe Gary Danko. I am considering some other places. Maybe Chez Panisse for lunch and a Mexican or dim sum dinner.

What do you think about Colibri? The food looks good but I want it to be a fun experience. Thanks for your help!!!! Any ideas for lunches, wine bars or wine shops will also be appreciated.

Cheers!

Is it possible to have a birthday dinner for 15 under 2000$????

The price is 120/person, and includes a 4 course tasting menu with hors d'oeuvres, a semi-private space, our own server, and a menu coordinated with the chef. This is good deal considering places like Hearth are going for 80/person, but we wouldn't have a private server, etc. Bar Boulud was over 3000, but included wine. Blue Water Grill was crazy. I'm probably getting a great deal considering Barber's spread in the August 2008 Gourmet. But I still am trying to feel better about dropping almost three grand on one meal. It's like Babette's Feast.

rare date opportunity- fatty crab, spotted pig, marllow and sons?

I haven't been to Fatty Crab, but I went to the Spotted Pig on a date night with my hubby and we had a great time. We went kinda early on a Friday--6ish--and only had to wait 30 mins. Plus we had drinks at the bar and the neighborhood is great to walk in after the meal. Enjoy!

Is it possible to have a birthday dinner for 15 under 2000$????

I am planning my husband's 40th birthday party for approx. 15 people. Currently I am scheduled to have a tasting menu at Blue Hill-very trendy, beautiful, but a bit pricey. Also, I don't want to appear as if I am over-indulgant. I scanned many restaurants and found them at least 2000--many were more. Any thoughts? Or is 2000 the minimum anywhere for a party of this size?

Artisanal Restaurant Week - Salmon or Steak Frites?

Get the steak frites, you can't go wrong. But make sure you get a mac 'n cheese side.

wine stores in Union Square

For really, really inexpensive wine, checkout Trader Joe's. In California it's a better scene, but don't rule them out completely. They have the occasional gem.

Where can I find the best burger on the Upper East Side. I would love it if they would deliver to 86th and 2nd

The Wicked Wolf or Barking Dog. Barking Dog delivers and they have wicked onion rings. WW has a very retro vibe. The food generally sucks, but the burger is quite good. JG Melons sucks.

Elizabeth in Nolita

Has anyone been to this new restaurant? I am thinking of having a party here. Any comments? Menu looks good and the price is nice.

Cheese!

Besides Artisanal, what do you think are the best restaurants to imbibe in cheese? Some good wine doesn't hurt either....

40th Birthday for beloved husband & 16 friends

I need advice on a great place for a 40th birthday party. I am currently reserved at Blue Hill, but I have some reservations (pardon the pun). I was considering Bar Boulud, but it is a bit pricey. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
