Cuban food in a sea of Central and South American restaurants
The Shopper's near me used to carry pasteles de guayaba y queso, but I think I was the only one buying them since they stopped. If you find anything worthwhile in your searches, I'd like to know. I grew up on Cuban food because of all the time my mom spent in South Florida as a child.
ISO Monte Cristo sandwiches in Orlando
My mom is sad that Bennigan's closed. Of course, the only thing she liked to eat there was the Monte Cristo sandwich. Does anyone know of a place in the Orlando area that serves them?
Thanks!
dumb restaurant names [Moved from Ontario Board]
Lala are you in Orlando? There is one there that is an old favorite and been there for decades.
Help me order a Cuban sandwich
Yeah, no mayo... Only mustard. The mayo is in the bread itself if it is indeed REAL Cuban bread.
Silly Eating Habits
I do that too.. well, I actually eat the 3 outside sections first and then eat the 3-pronged thing in the middle.
Silly Eating Habits
I always take a Big Mac apart when I eat it. I only do this with Big Macs, not any other hamburger. When I eat intact hamburgers, they are upside down and I'm not a lefty.
Breakfast Columbia
As long as you have decent service... Both times I've been to the Elkridge location, the service has been terrible for breakfast. They do have good muffins, though.
Soda vs. Pop redux (Map)
I'm from Florida originally and we call it Coke. My aunt (who now lives in Maine) expects someone to ask her what kind when she orders one.
I went to grad school in Western Pennsylvania and there seemed to be a split right along I-99 where people would say "pop" or "coke." There used to be arguments in my sorority over which it was.
I now live in Maryland and it's soda here.
local farm to table restaurants-what is your favorite?
I did the Prix Fixe menu the last time I went. I liked the pate a lot as well as the trout. My husband was most impressed by his dessert. It was a chocolate cake ice cream served in a bowl made of ice. I don't remember what his main course was... probably the least French thing on the menu.

Tersiguel's in Ellicott City is excellent. We went there for my birthday last year. They're organic and grow their own produce.
Cuba de Ayer
Is Cuba de Ayer still open? If so, what are the entree price ranges? Or does anyone have any better suggestions for Cuban or Spanish food between Silver Spring and Baltimore City?
Thanks
30th Birthday Dinner -- Arundel Mills area and beyond
I dragged my husband to Tersiguel's last year. I doubt he'll be up for French food again this year...
30th Birthday Dinner -- Arundel Mills area and beyond
I'm trying to come up with a place for my husband to take me for my 30th birthday. We live near Arundel Mills, but are willing to travel to Columbia and Ellicott City and stuff. We'd rather not go into Baltimore City or Washington DC.
I do have a few stipulations other than location. I'm pregnant. I cannot eat seafood. I have issues with cheese, so I have to be careful with Italian or Mexican food. Obviously, places like Iron Bridge are out because I cannot drink. My husband doesn't like Indian Food. We don't mind chains, but don't want the typical ones. I'd like to stay under about $50 per person.
Thanks!
do you get crabby when hungry?
Thanks for the GD tip. I haven't had my glucose tolerance test, yet. I'm petrified that I have it because I'm obsessed with fruit.
I snapped at my boss a month ago when she made me work through lunch for 9 hours straight... She's known I am pregnant since the beginning because I work in a lab.
do you get crabby when hungry?
Normally, I would do okay as long as I know when I get to eat at least a snack. Now that I'm pregnant, I will eat when I'm hungry... Since I had such terrible morning sickness for the first trimester, actually being hungry is a good thing.
Cuban cooking class
I grew up in Florida and my mom loves to make Cuban food, although we're not Cuban. I agree with Cocinero Cubano, that a good cookbook is probably the best way to go. Many recipes are easy and I have found most of the ingredients at Giant or Shopper's. I've even taught my husband a couple of easy dishes, and he can barely boil water.
Another option, although not Cuban certainly Cuban-influenced, would be to find a "Floribbean" cooking class. Howard County Parks and Rec offers one next Wednesday. It's only $39 as opposed to $70, although not specifically the type of class she wants.

Claude Moore Colonial Farm Market Fair
I love that place. I haven't been since 2001 when I used to volunteer during their spring clean-up and market fair set-ups. :( Thanks for sharing.
McDondald's Does Away with $1 Chicken Biscuit
If I wanted a Southern Style biscuit, I'd go across the street to Chik Fil A. I liked the McDonald's plain biscuits because they were slightly spicy and cost $1.
Yay McDonald's... way to piss off a pregnant woman! >:-(
McDondald's Does Away with $1 Chicken Biscuit
I'm pregnant and REALLY wanted a chicken biscuit from McDonald's for breakfast this morning. I get there only to find out they've done away with the $1 one on the breakfast menu in favor of the "Southern Style" one. I'm mad. If I wanted to pay $3 of a breakfast sandwich, I'd go across the street to Chik fil A.
Sorry for the rant.
Anyone use Costco vs BJ's for Deli Platter or Birthday Cake?
Costco platters are wonderful. I've done the deli and the veggies for a couple of different parties and they're always a big hit. I like the sheet cake, too. In general, we get a pie or a non-sheet cake, though. You certainly can't beat the prices.
whataburger???
I always made my mom go to Whataburger whenever we were in Pensacola. Now, I want one... I always liked them better than Whoppers.
Lunch Near Farragut West
I always liked Park Place (I think it's at 17 and I). They have a decent salad/hot bar. When I worked around there, I remember a couple of burrito carts that were pretty good, too. I didn't venture out too much because everything was so expensive.
I hope your commute isn't too bad from B'more. I didn't enjoy mine.
Food you eat in the privacy of your own home? (WARNING: Potentially disgusting, feel free to not open if you are squeamish)
Are you my long lost sibling? I do that all the time... I don't like Tabasco brand for some reason, though. My husband makes so much fun of me for doing it: "Are you really putting hot sauce on Shepherd's Pie?"

That sounds like something I would do, with my addiction to salsa... maybe when tomatoes don't make me sick again.
What is your favorite holiday side dish?
Dolores, my cousin who doesn't like vegetables eats it. The goopy stuff to vegetable ratio is rather high.

Thanks... I eat them so rarely that it doesn't matter.. partly because I'm embarrassed by my habit and have been obsessed with chicken lately. Big Macs are a once in a blue moon thing.

Well, we were in elementary school when Reagan declared it a vegetable :-P I only really like ketchup on my Big Macs, and I prefer TI since that's what's on them anyways. I prefer a light squirt of mustard on everything else. There's just something about that one burger.
Come October/November we can start the ketchup bottle baby feedings ;-)
What is your favorite holiday side dish?
My mom's horrible for you vegetable casserole:
1 stick of butter, 1 c of mayo, 2 c of sharp cheddar, celery, onions, frozen mixed veggies, and crushed Cheezits on top.

I know it's not very chowish, but I like Big Macs. I don't like to eat them like a normal person, though. I take every layer apart, dip it in ketchup or Thousand Island dressing, and eat it separately. It took me 6 months of dating before my husband saw me eat one this way. He still laughs at it and we've been married for almost 3 years. Big Macs are the only sandwich or burger that I eat in this fashion. Everything else stays in one piece, unless it falls apart.
My husband drowns his perfectly good mac n cheese (homemade) in a ton of ketchup.
