Wisconsin Food in DC, MD, VA?

On football weekends Hamilton's, our Packer and Badger bar, offers brats and fried cheese curds. But that's a long four month wait. It's Hamiltons on 2nd NW (not The Hamilton on 14th)

Where's the best fried chicken in D.C. or Northern VA?

Central -- hands down

Giants Saints Game Sunday?

The places on the Hill by the Tune Inn won't be good for the Giants / Saints game. The Hawk & Dove is a Packer bar. The Pour House (which does feature soccer on other days) is packed to the gills with Steelers fans. And I wouldn't call either of those a chow spot (and that's generous). Cap Lounge a bit further up the street should probably have it on.

Best place might be the Ugly Mug. Or on the other side of the Hill -- H Street NE -- is the Argonaut, which has terrific pub food and does show NFL games.

The big Giants bar in town (allegedly) is the 51st State in the West End. (but I have no idea what their food is like)

Super Bowl - Pittsburgh and Iron City

Good Libations in Shaw (1201 5th St NW) had Iron City in stock a few weeks back (right after the stillers won AFC game). Dunno if they still have it (since I bought a couple of cases myself)

Another good Pittsburgh sandwich is shaved ham (really good warm with BBQ sauce)

Leinenkugel's Original in NoVA?

I love Leinie's original -- but have never found it out here (always bring back a case of that or Point Special with me when traveling back from Wisconsin)

Milwaukee dntwn June 19-24 -- reccomendations?

The Ambassador is close to Miss Katie's Diner -- which is our favorite place for breakfast when we're back in town.

Water Buffalo in the Third Ward has terrific sandwiches at lunchtime. You can eat at the bar and have a great view of the river and River Walk. Or if the weather's nice, they have a great deck.

As for Cedarburg, we love Morton's Wisconsin Inn -- I highly recommend it. Really good soups. Never have had a bad meal there. It's a block off of the shopping street

Where to eat before artomatic

There's nothing immediately around there -- it's still a lot of vacant lots and construction sites. (Maybe some fast food chains on NY Avenue.)

Unfortunately there's really nothing decent in the station (some people like B. Smith's but I'm not among them)

Much better (esp. on such a nice evening) to walk two blocks down to Bistro Bis or Johnny's Half Shell.

Gluten-free in DC?

My sister must eat gluten free meals -- and every time she visits DC she loves to go for Ethiopian. Injera made from millet flour is gluten free. We went to Etete last time.

Wisconsin Folk: what are your favorite places to buy Brats?

whenever I'm back in Wisconsin visiting the folks I stop at Gundrum's in downtown Slinger. They make their own brats -- and better yet, with a smokehouse out back, offer smoked brats. Great summer sausage and mettwurst too.

what do you think about Levantes in dupont circle?

We went about six months ago -- and I thought the food was mediocre and the service worse. (admittedly, I walked in disappointed having found that the always reliable Bacchus on Jefferson Street NW, our intended destination, had closed) Levantes' chicken was dry, the hummus way too cold and tasteless. The only thing I'd eat again would be their hot-from-the oven pitas.

I'll take the metro out to the Bacchus in Bethesda first and give that a try.

Breakfast/Brunch near Hotel Washington

Yep -- Old Ebbitt is your best bet.

Avoid at all costs the restaurant located in the Hotel Washington -- I think it's called the Two Continents. Simply awful food.

Dinner and "sure things" in DC

Any Ethiopian restaurant will have good vegetarian options. Most of the great ones (Etete, Dukem) are quite aways away from where you're staying. But Zed's (on M Street in Gtown) is good.

The Best Gluten Free Restaurants in DC and the DC Area

My sister has celiac -- and when she visits us in DC she loves going out for Ethiopian -- just have to ask upfront that the injera is made exclusively out of tef.

Etete and Dukem both fit the bill. Zed's (if I recall correctly) admitted that there was some wheat flour in theirs.

I agree on Full Kee. Capital Q BBQ is you're up for that too.

As for the bus, the Circulator is a good option -- costs only a buck. And it may run more frequently on Sat. than the 80 bus. You can catch it up at New York and 5th (a block and a half north of H).

It will go down K Street across town -- ask the driver to let you off at the closest spot to the KC. (will be about a 5-6 block walk from there).

Milwaukee for a night...

I definitely agree on Three Brothers. Those garlic sausages are delicious. But I always get the goose, it's really good and it's a rare dish to find on menus elsewhere.

And after you're done eating, you're but a few blocks away from another unique Milwaukee joint -- At Random. It's a bar that serves only ice cream drinks. True to its name though, it might not be open when you stop by -- the owners open up whenever they care to, at random.

PHO in downtown DC

I know of only one place downtown for pho: it's a little Vietnamese place in Chinablock. Can't remember the name -- but it's on Sixth Street NW south of H, right near the Burma Restaurant.

While it's not nearly as good as pho in NOVA it still hits the spot.

My Cleveland report (long)

A group of friends and I were in Cleveland for Labor Day weekend (joining thousands of other Badger fans for a football game). Thanks for some great recommendations from chowhound, we ate well!

Friday lunch. We stayed in downtown and walked a few blocks to the Warehouse District to the Little Bar for some burgers. They were terrific -- perfectly done. You could even get that ballpark mustard they use at Jacobs Field (but I stayed with a little onion). A couple bottles of the local Great Lakes Brewery's "Elliot Ness" ale and we were good to go.

Friday dinner. Met up with a friend who lives in Cleveland at Osteria di Valerio & Al -- also in the Warehouse District. They had a nicely priced wine list of mostly Italian wines, so were started with a bottle of red. Shared appetizers of beef sirloin carpaccio (tender and flavorful) and calamari in marinara -- these were among the best we've eaten in ages -- they were not breaded and fried -- just light and crisp in the tomato sauce.

Entrees were half a roast duck (for me) -- crispy skin in a carrot and olive sauce (heavy on the chopped carrots -- could have used a few more olives); our friend had the special: veal scalopini with shrimp and lobster (I'm not a veal fan, but the taste I had was good) others had pasta: gnocchi in gorganzola sauce; cavatelli with wild mushrooms (for some reason we don't find that shape of pasta much out here in DC). The bread they served was nothing special -- reminded me of soft "italian bread" one can buy in the supermarket bread aisle.

Our Cleveland friend took us in her car for a little tour of the near west side -- we ended up at Lola in Tremont for dessert. Nice scene -- we sat in the lounge area -- the desserts were small -- like a tasting menu -- standouts were a raspberry tart with rose cream and rose granita; chocolate semifredo; and lemon cake scented with thyme and served with fresh berries. I was the only one who liked a sort of panzanella -- thin slices of peaches with candied fennel, cubes of toasted cake and little chunks of a firm goat cheese.

Saturday breakfast -- after those big meals we needed a long walk -- and we headed down past Jacobs Field to Juniper Grill for breakfast -- and a great breakfast it was. I had a nice bowl of oatmeal followed by mixed berry pancakes; my friend has a sort of toad in the hole -- eggs cooked in a hole made in some great toast.

Saturday lunch /dinner was brats and beer at a Wisconsin tailgate party before the game. The Cleveland part of that was again the tasty Great Lakes Brewery beer.

Rave reviews, but I don't get it

For me it's breakfast at the Market Lunch in Eastern Market. Talk about long lines and surly service for not-so-tender pancakes, runny grits and weak coffee.

Much better to go across 7th Street SE to the salvadoran place for eggs, beans and pupusas.

Souffle in DC

Le Chaumiere in Georgetown has terrific dessert souflees -- either chocolate or grand marnier

Fried Bologna Sandwich Or Other Unusual Midwestern Specialty

The Dairy Godmother in Delray / Alexandria has great M'waukee style frozen custard -- but better yet -- once a month features a bratwurst night, complete with accordian player.

Next one will be in September.

Midwest 'hounds: food unique to or that defines your community/town/metro area/state

Thanks Fydeaux for the Graf's 50-50. they also had something called "White Soda" -- I was never quite sure what it was -- probably something to pour into a Brandy Old-Fashioned.

I grew up just north of Milwaukee -- very German-American territory. Every town (West Bend, Slinger, Kewaskum, Fond du Lac) had a butcher who offered (in addition to the ubiquitous brat) their own versions of mettwurst, braunschweiger, souse, headcheese, and my favorite, summer sausage. Right after hunting season, those lucky to get a deer would end up with venison brats and summer sausage.

Friday's NY Times, btw, featured Springfield, Illinois as a travel spot -- their unique culinary contribution is the "horseshoe" -- "a gargantuan open-face sandwich stuffed with meat (hamburger, usually), buried in French fries and smothered in cheese sauce."
