Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?

We buy all his clothes/books/pjs on consignment, just way cheaper than new. The only thing I buy new for him are shoes and I get those from Stride Rite. I just don't have a use for a lot of the stuff they sell. The produce is not organic, and we buy almost all organic. Even if it was, their bag of lemons would take up half my fridge. I think the selection can vary a lot from place to place. I remember really liking it when I lived in California, but I was much more into eating processed foods and factory farmed meats then, so that may be the difference.

Interesting!

Yeah, it just depends on lifestyle, for sure. We cloth diapered and used cloth wipes (we are almost done potty training, hooray!), and I buy all my son's clothing at seasonal consignment sales for pennies compared to what I'd pay for anything new. The only thing he always gets new are shoes, as I don't think used shoes are good for growing feeties.

I started going when I lived in LA and I remember the liquor deals being very good. Ours doesn't sell liquor, so it's n/a, and their wines are not any cheaper than the grocery, so there you go. We do have a grocery that does discounted gas for members (every $50 you spend at the store you get 10 cents off), so I get my gas discounted from them.

Of course. Just giving my perspective. YMMV.

Yes, I buy it regularly. I really like it! It goes for about $8 a jar at my local grocery, and I think it was $9 or $10 for THREE jars at Costco. It comes in a glass jar like a traditional jar of pasta sauce, and it is not a cherry tomato sauce, just a marinara. As someone else said, taste is relative. Plus we have very few good choices in our regular groceries for jarred sauce, here in the land of Ragu and Prego lovers.

I don't get the allure either. Our membership auto-renews but I'm really thinking of cancelling because we almost never go there. The things people buy "all the time," we don't buy (paper towels, for example, which we don't use, bottled water, pop, etc are all things we don't buy). And things we do use like that, such as TP, we buy green/recycled, and they don't sell anything like that. There are no local products at all. The meat is inferior to what I can get from local farms and from my CSA, and same goes for produce. About the only thing I've bought there recently is the Mario Batali pasta sauce. Ours does not sell liquor and the wine prices are not better than our local grocery. And for a family of 2.5 (child of 3), giant tubs of perishable foods are not things we can use up before they spoil. I've also had some really bad stuff there, like their bacon, which I actually returned it was so awful, and the fresh mozz balls, which had zero taste at all.

We have used it to buy select electronics at a discount, like our digital camera and GPS unit.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

gah, I forgot baby corn. I hate them, they are of the Devil.

When they get your takeout order wrong yet again...

been there, done that. At the place I'm talking about, the owner simply stated that he was proud of his team and thought they did a great job. It's kind of like the emperor's new clothes here - nboody else is complaining and they have tons of business, so the complaints I think mostly fell on deaf ears. There are only so many comps or gift cards you can receive to make up for errors and then you just really don't want to go back.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

I know it's foodie blasphemy, but I just cannot like beets. I've tried them cooked every which way, all kinds of recipes and presentations, I just find them to be awful.

How much do you tip coat check attendants at restaurants?

I think so. Or perhaps the fact that I mostly go to more downscale places.

Hooray! I'm not the only one!!!

NYT: "A Mathematical Challenge to Obesity"

OTOH, it's also been scientifically proven that if presented with more food than necessary, someone will eat all that's served, even when TOLD that there is more than what they need in what they are being presented (see Center of Science/Public Interest, they've done a bunch of these). Give someone a big dish of pasta, they finish the dish. Portion sizes have exploded alongside the abundance of food. There is no "small" size anything anywhere at most restaurants, and the giant cups of soda people fill up on at the gas station aren't helping matters (plus a lot of them with artificial sweeteners, making the body want even more food/something to get what the brain promised but which the body was cheated out of receiving). I think the whole thing is just out of whack and there is no single problem.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

I think this is closest to the truth - they are sort of the Wal-Mart of chain restaurants. Perhaps they are more ubiquitous. Not everyone has a Friday's or Ruby Tuesdays, but it seems there is an OG everywhere. They are like the flagship of bad, chain restaurants.

What did you have for breakfast today?

Today I had 3 mini-muffins I baked last night (ok, from a mix, but it was Hodgson Mills' organic!), they were blueberry with flaxseed. They were *just* this side of being edible and not like eating sawdust. I made them for my toddler's lunches but I'm not sure he's going to want them unless I cut them in half and slather them with butter and jam. Hmm, now there's an idea.

How much do you tip coat check attendants at restaurants?

I dunno, I've been to all types of restaurants here. White tablecloth/crumbing places and everything in between down to dive bar. Have just never seen it. I'm pretty well traveled in our restaurant scene here.

how do you handle this??? [Moved from New Jersey]

I can tell you from personal experience, winning in small claims does not mean you get the money. There's just nothing compelling them to pay. It's not like if they don't pay, they're picked up and sent to jail. The judge bangs the gavel, bang, you win. Then you dont' get your money.

There's nothing you can do at this point. I would probably encourage others not to patronize the place if I heard of someone who was thinking of going there.

What did you have for lunch today?

Reheated roasted sweet and regular potatoes, boca burger (just the burger, no bun or toppings) and some red raspberries. It wasn't terribly exciting.

Another vote for start with the Double-Double and then make a return trip to get something different/secret menu. It's a good solid fast food burger, as another poster said, no fakey, chemically-tasting stuff.

I am one of the tiny percentage of people who actually loves their fries. I hate hard/crisp/very dark brown fries, I like 'em the way they do them at In & Out and my waist is very glad we don't have one where I live.

Another vote for Luigi's. Great pizza. Cash only.

Another one who could not stand to even think about chicken. And I love chicken! It's weird how different things can be.

The smell thing is just off the hook crazy, isnt' it? This continues after the baby is born - you will know way before anyone else when the baby has pooped. My kid turns 3 this month (yes, we are working on PT) and I can still smell it from the other room as soon as he goes.

I had to quit riding the train when I was PG. I had to get off too many times from sweaty/almost puking but depending on where you live, that may not be an option. Always, always have little plastic bags with you in case of emergency puking, which can happen anytime.

Trader Joe's also makes ginger snaps with bits of real candied ginger in them. I found those much more palatable than any ginger candy, and they have the added benefit of putting something in your stomach (like crackers, but better). Don't worry about the nutrition (or lack thereof) with something like this. Baby will take all he or she needs from your nutrient stores, and you will make it all up when your appetite comes back.

The being ill/food aversions thing is normal. I never had what people talk about as those "weird" cravings, but when I wanted something, I wanted it, and I had to have it repeatedly/daily until for whatever reason I had finally found enough. Orange juice, banana splits, even things I never, ever, ever eat like Whoppers.

When they get your takeout order wrong yet again...

I posted about this about a year ago, because there's a place near my work that I really like to get takeout from, but my order is wrong about 60% of the time, and in little ways like what you described.

I've basically all but quit getting takeout there because it's too frustrating. I just eat there at the restaurant, where the errors are just as frequent but can be quickly resolved. I also go there less often because of the added expensive of tax and tip when dining in, so they are technically losing out because of these errors.

"Pink Slime " fallout

+1

I certainly wouldn't shed a tear if someone put Monsanto (for example) out of work and all their employees instead went to work on smaller, family-owned farms like Niman Ranch, Polyface, etc.

The OP stated she originally planned on Rosewood but they have a fee she did not feel comfortable paying.

Seperate Checks?

Typically, one generous person will offer to put something that's "shared" on their check, like a bottle of wine or an app.

Try the back room at Marcelita's, a mexican restaurant in Hudson. My sister had her (tiny) wedding reception there and it was very inexpensive and they were friendly and accommodating.

What would Emily Post do? [moved from New Orleans]

I was unfortunately thinking the same thing. Other than glaring and leaving, you're literally taking your life in your hand to confront ANYONE anymore.
