Dinner near movie theater in Washington Township (Bergen)?

Jack's Cafe in Westwood is about 5 minutes away--good, fresh cooking in a very casual setting. Great homemade soups.

what to do with half a can of pumpkin puree

I like to add it to greek yogurt with some honey and pumpkin pie spice.

Mahwah eats - State line diner??

Have never been impressed by State Line diner. We like Roxanne's in Mahwah--nice bar, brick oven pizza, pasta, salads etc.

Thanksgiving soup?

Thanks ghg...the Silver Palate recipe looks great...and I knew you'd have something gluten free for me!!

Thanksgiving soup?

Love anything with wild mushrooms. Do you have a recipe?

Thanksgiving soup?

Do you serve soup at Thanksgiving dinner? I would like to, and am looking for ideas. I know butternut squash/apple soup is traditional, but any other suggestions? Vegetarian recipes a plus! TIA

I think I'm Hosting Thanksgiving! Help! :)

Butterscotch yams sound delicious!! Care to share the recipe?

What Tastes Better Frozen?

Chocolate vitamuffins

Help fine tune my choices?

LOVE Camellia Grill...I don't think you need to cut it from the list, I just wouldn't go to dinner there. Such a N.O. institution and an experience not to be missed, IMHO.

Jellybean Flavors

2 more votes for buttered popcorn and toasted marshmallow!

Wyckoff bakery closed? Need other suggestions....

The owners of Wyckoff Bakery are in fact at Lotito's Deli in Ramsey...they have a big case at the front of the store and are still making custom cakes. Just ordered one for my son's party this weekend!

am I a SNOB?

Well put!!

Made a new discovery there today that gets a big thumbs up....Healthy 8 Chopped Veggie Mix. It's broccoli, carrots, red and green cabbage, jicama, peppers, radish and celery chopped up...while I know it's the ultimate in laziness, I threw in some chickpeas, capers and fresh mozzarella and I have a chopped salad in 2 minutes flat! Where has this been all my life?! Anyone know if it's new or if I've just never seen it before?

My kids LOVE the lite kettle popcorn...I buy the little bags for lunchboxes!

Where do you eat at the Palisades Mall?

We also really like Cassies...there's one in Englewood, NJ as well--I like the atmosphere of that one better--the one in Orangeburg is in a space that used to be a diner and you can tell--but we really enjoy the salads. Haven't been in a while but there used to be a stacked salad with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and balsamic that I remember being very good. Heads and shoulders above anything you'll find at the Palisades.

Do you have a recipe that works so well that you have no interest in trying another?

Mind sharing your mom's recipe for lemon bars? We LOVE lemon bars!!

What were you eating in Manhattan in the late 90s? Are you still seeking out/ordering those foods today?

That's really too funny...there used to be one on the UWS too--I think that one's closed.

Best Food in Bergen Co, NJ

Great salads at Roxanne's, too. My kids love this place!

Too funny because I caught my boyfriend taking another girl there on a date!!

Love this topic! I was seeking out and eating way too many carbs! Lived on the UES...

Bella Donna was a staple for great, inexpensive pasta dishes and AMAZING bread. Loved the farfalle with peas.
Boyfriend used to love to go to Yuka for AYCE sushi...even back then, I thought that was just wrong!
Pick-A-Bagel for late-night carb fix
Pig Heaven or Our Place for Chinese in the 'hood
Hong Fat for late-night Chinatown fix after the bars
Fujiyama Mama was a big date place...sushi and a DJ mixing tunes!
Sedutto's for Tasti d Lite, which I considered one of the food groups back then
EJ's Luncheonette--used to get the Tuna Nicoise salad or an egg white omelette
Centro Vasco for Spanish--great prices for lobsters
Docks for seafood
Candle Cafe when I felt like being virtuous...LOVED their pumpkin pudding
Delizia for great slices

Hands Down Best Food-Favor You Have Ever Received at an Event?

Krispy Kreme donuts are always a big hit...they can pre-pack them in 2-packs. Will there be kids there? Have also been to a party with a Mr. Softee truck waiting outside as we left---so fun, but tough if it's a lot of (impatient!) people leaving simultaneously.

delicious uses for frozen peas....

I throw them into my mac and cheese when I'm making it for my kids. Also throw them in when I make fried rice.

Double-dipping - explain it to me

Well, safe there because we have a giant yellow lab and I'm sure all of us have ingested our fair share of his hair!

And btw, kids are exposed to plenty of germs even without double-dipping or eating from the communal chips bowl. Water fountain at school, anyone?

Double-dipping - explain it to me

Oh, now I have something else to obsess about!! Never really thought about those crayons...something tells me they don't get washed too often (ever?!!)

My kids won't even eat out of bowls of chips at birthday parties where kids keep grabbing, shoving in their mouths and coming back for more. I've trained them well!!

Double-dipping - explain it to me

Definite non-double dipper here. My kids--who are 10 and 7--know not to do it--not at home, not at someone else's home, not at a restaurant. It's unsanitary, it's rude and it totally skeeves me out!!

Best Tortilla Chips

I don't think I've seen them...let us know how they are!!

Best Tortilla Chips

Totally agree!! +1 for Xochitl...thin and tasty and just right for dipping.

Gluten & Dairy free dessert

Would love to see the recipe when your mom returns from vacation!! Sounds great.

New Orleans on a diet....

Good question...not sure.

New Orleans on a diet....

With so much amazing seafood available, I think it's possible to enjoy yourself but not break the diet bank while you are there. Crawfish, oysters, crabmeat cocktail, shrimp...if the fish is fresh enough, there are many simple preparations that should fit the bill. Request sauces on the side so you don't feel totally deprived....and be sure to save up for a splurge or two...and you can pay the price when you get home! And don't forget a snowball for dessert. Lots of sugar, yes, but definitely more virtuous than bread pudding and so good!!!
