Vegan brunch/lunch recipes? Help?

To be honest, I'd be really, really surprised if your vegan friend didn't eat yeast.

I've *never* heard of a vegan not eating yeast because it is "living and breathing"
I often use the Int'l Vegetarian Union as a good source for these issues, and according to them yeast is vegan.

Check with your friend to be sure, if you're not convinced - but honestly, I doubt it's an issue and wouldn't plan your meal around avoiding yeast!

ISO harissa in Ottawa

Thanks Sue!
For anyone else looking, a friend mentioned La Bottega, too.

Good news for Montreal chiliheads! Cuisine Szechuan

Fair enough!
Just a bit of a warning, I suppose, to those who are trying to eat healthy!

ISO harissa in Ottawa

Hi hounds,

I've had my eye on a few recipes using harissa, the North African spice paste.

Does anyone know where I might be able to locate it in Ottawa, Ontario?

Thanks in advance!
p.s. the recipe I'm intending to make with it: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/...

Good news for Montreal chiliheads! Cuisine Szechuan

I'm sorry to say this, because I was really looking forward to trying out this restaurant.

I gathered some recommendations for vegetarian dishes from this and another thread ("Vegetarian Chinese," also on this board). We ordered 3: hot spicy tofu with peanuts, garlic eggplant, and shanghai bok choy with garlic.

My partner and I were, to be honest, really disgusted by the amount of oil used in all three of these dishes, but especially on tofu and eggplant. The dishes arrived with a massive puddle of oil and everything was just absolutely slick with grease. We could only eat a small portion of what we were served. While the food was moderately tasty, I won't go back ever again. I wish I was exaggerating, but I think there was easily a half cup of oil in each dish. Yuck!

Source of Vintage Kitchen Wares?

You could try Mrs. Huizenga's on Roncesvalles. Great little shop! I've found loads of things there. There are also a few other vintage/antique shops on Queen West at the foot of Roncesvalles.

But, be careful coming down here - as much as I adore my neighbourhood, it's currently undergoing some major construction. All the shops are open but there's no southbound TTC service along Roncey. Easily walkable from Dundas West station, though (or north from Queen)

LLBO

You could try Udupi Palace for dosa. It's in the Gerrard India Bazaar - a good area for other chow, too.

Here's a link to their website: http://www.udupipalace.ca/

We particularly enjoyed the samosa chaat, too. Enjoy!

Cheap eats around bay and bloor

Hmmm. Camros Organic Eatery is really tasty and very close to Bay/Bloor! It's only open on weekdays and might only be open for lunch.

I'm not sure what your definition of cheap is, but I think it is very affordable given the quality of the ingredients.

Here's a link: http://www.camroseatery.com/

Try a search on these boards - I know it's gotten a lot of (positive) attention on CH.

I saw some last night at Maple Produce on Roncesvalles (at Fermanagh)

Vegetarian restaurants in Toronto?

No, not at all - no porridge or tofu sramble to be found! The veg platter offers something very similar to the combination of veg stews/wot that most places serve.

Vegetarian restaurants in Toronto?

So sorry to hear the brunch wasn't very good. I've never tried it but have always wondered. Thanks for sharing as you've saved me a bit of trouble. I do like their classic veggie platter. The faux beef IS quite salty, so stay away from that if you're particularly sensitive. The beet salad is really good and sour.

M&B is a good spot. I do find the owner/cook a bit overbearing, though very friendly and sweet!

Post Bar/Late Night Eats

Sarah's Falafel and Shawarma in the Annex (on Bloor near Brunswick) stays open quite late most days. I think they might be open until 4am on weekends, if I'm not mistaken.

Definitely not the nicest atmosphere and I've noticed that the late-night staff are not nearly as generous with the toppings, but on the whole a solid option - especially if you're able to do take-out. The fried eggplant sandwich is my favourite!

ISO (in search of) coconut ice-cream

Can anyone tell me if Tropical Treets coconut ice cream is dairy-free (i.e. vegan)?
I'd like to pick it up, but will avoid the trek if it's not what I'm looking for.
Thanks!

Packaged Indian Food

My favourite is Patel's
(no preservatives!)

Here's a web link: http://www.patelscuisine.com/
They can be found at a number of stores, but I usually pick them up at Qi Natural Foods on Roncesvalles.

I'm usually really weary of heating them up in the plastic bag (for worry of carcinogens and such). I always, always snip the bag and heat in a little saucepan.

Best choices in Hamilton

I went to Mac too!

I really enjoyed Papagayo for Mexican, but I know there have been lots of other threads about Hamilton restaurants. You might want to try a search.

Enjoy!

Sounds great! Does anyone know if they have a vegetarian curry option?

Hidden away, independent cafes, worth making a special trip to visit.

Tequila Bookworm on Queen West is quite popular, and would probably be busy enough to merit staying open late. I'm not sure if they have WiFi, but it would be worth a try.

Where to buy Baguette for Bahn Mi

As far as I can tell, most of the Ginger locations use bread from the Portuguese bakeries to make their banh mi. A place like Nova Era or Golden Wheat might be worth a try, as I regularly see plastic bags with these logos on them in the restaurant.

Where to find Halloumi cheese in Toronto

Whole Foods stocks it regularly. I've never purchased it, so I can't speak to the quality. I do remember it being a bit pricey, but that's no surprise for Whole Foods!

The Green Room - how is it?

I'd only go for drinks, and even so a touch reluctantly - it's a guilty pleasure, not a destination. Definitely don't bother with the food!

Davids Tea on Queen West

I agree - I've never had a bad experience at Tealish.

Worst I've had is that the staff are shy! Cute, actually - the girls I've spoken with there are definitely a bit reserved.

Dear Toronto: I think I've done my homework & would like your input

Amazing! You've definitely done your homework and it certainly looks like you've got a great list going.

Jumbo Empanadas is a great neighbourhood spot for a casual lunch in Kensington.

I second the suggestion upthread about stopping in at Yung Sing bakery on Baldwin. It's just a little bakery, but oh it's good - such soft bread. You could also grab some sesame balls from Kim Moon Bakery in Chinatown if you're around there & looking for a snack.

The only removal I might suggest is Mother's Dumplings. I found the filling a bit bland and the wrapper on these really thick and doughy - a real disappointment, especially considering all the good things I have heard about them.

Little India (the restaurant on Queen) is a good, solid bet - nothing extraordinary, but it's really can't-go-wrong Indian.

Hope you have a great time! Be sure to send along a post-trip report! Love to know what you think.

Vegan Breakfast/Brunch Spots

I haven't been to either, but have heard great things about
Get Real! Cafe http://www.getrealcafe.com/
and Sadie's diner http://www.blogto.com/restaurants/sad...

Fresh and Fressen would also be great picks! Enjoy!

Yonge/Bloor Asian joints

Yep - I immediately thought of Ginger too.
They've opened up numerous other locations, but my favourite by far is in the Annex. It's a new (and thus a bit cleaner!) location on Bloor, between Spadina and Bathurst on the south side.

I'll leave the other 'hounds to give you other Asian restaurant recs, but please do enjoy yourself here!
