Rome: Is Nonna Betta really Kosher?

Nonna Betta was a kosher dairy restaurant until a couple of years ago; it no longer is. The website describes it as "kosher style".
Now, as I understand the situation, they serve both dairy dishes and meat dishes, and are not under any sort of rabbinical supervision. Not sure whether this will be relevant to you if you do not observe kashruth.

ISO good Israeli or Jewish restaurants in Jerusalem

Thank you, debs76. And I am to be right down the street, literally from this restaurant. I see it's at the location where Caffit was for years, at the corner of Hananya and Emek Refaim.
Already printed out a discount coupon from eLuna!

ISO good Israeli or Jewish restaurants in Jerusalem

I'm getting ready for another trip to Jerusalem in less than six months and am looking forward to trying some of these. Especially Adom at the First Station which is not too far from the apartment I'm renting just off Emek Rephaim down the road a bit. Thanks!

Ladurée Soho

Thanks, I guess we'll try the one on Madison if we go.

Ladurée Soho

Can someone tell me if the Ladurée in Soho is open yet? My teenage granddaughter wants to go to Ladurée on Monday, and I was hoping we could go to the one downtown and actually sit down and have some sort of meal, rather than going to the one on the Upper East Side and just wait on line. I imagine that it will be real crowded as Monday is Martin Luther King's birthday, a legal holiday.

Which food products available only in Israel are worthy to bring to the US?

I don't know if this is really a "food product" but I'm pretty sure that there are kosher Altoids available in Israel.

Sunday nights in Siracusa?

Try Sicilia in Tavola, whose closing day is Monday. To my mind, the food there is unbeatable. It's very small, so you need to reserve in advance. It's delightful!

Rio Mare tuna, from Italy

Yes, thanks, that's it exactly. There's some sort of a question because apparently the tuna is being caught a different place than it was at the time of the most recent hechsher. And I guess a major consideration with tuna is what else get caught in the nets.
I guess I will try to answer my own question by writing to the Comunita Ebraica in Rome .....

Rio Mare tuna, from Italy

I bought a couple of cans of this tuna on a recent trip, and thought that it was certified kosher. But now I am questioning this and the Italian kashruth website is confusing. This is the simple tuna in olive oil, but I can't find a hechsher or a note about country of origin on the can. Anyone know about this?

Florence -- memorable romantic dining for a couple of vegetarians?

It's been a few years (five?) but I have had several good vegetarian meals at Al Tranvai. Florence, and Tuscany in general, are a little trickier for a true vegetarian than many other parts of Italy, but I agree that you don't need to stick to vegetarian restaurants.
Yum, Al Tranvai!

Where to stay in Rome to eat well?

I'm a single woman traveller who spent a few days in Rome at the end of my very recent Italy vacation, and stayed in Monti for the first time. It was great for me, but I've mostly stayed lately in the area to the west of Piazza Farnese, don't know Prati or Testaccio at all.
I am perhaps not as demanding as some who post here, but I found good tasty fresh food in many places along the major streets of Monti, some nice take out, and most importantly very informal places where I felt very comfortable as a single diner. I often travel alone, and am very accustomed to dining alone in Italy including Rome, and there was just something about the eating places in Monti that seemed more lone-diner friendly. Also places to sit out and have a coffee or a drink at relatively reasonable prices.

Sicily Trip Report 2013 - Palermo, Siracusa, Taormina, etc. (way too long as usual)

Nice report!
I will chime in to agree with you about Osteria Mariano, which I enjoyed last spring. But coming back this spring I found it not a pleasant experience. I stopped in for lunch and, although the food was not bad (I had an orange salad ---- which was actuallly just a couple of orange sections, and a vegetarian pasta with I think zucchini), the service was so perfunctory that it tipped the scales to an overall negative experience.

chowing kat does Rome - report ( warning - long)

Great report, reminding me that I should do a similar write up. And as for Artigianale Gelato Corona: I will NEVER forget the taste of the "mela verde" (green apple) gelato I had there a few years ago.

Looking for a cooking school on Sicily

I don't know about a program lasting that long, but know of shorter possibilities on Ortigia (Siracusa, southeastern Sicily) and in Palermo. ( I've not actually participated in either class.)

I've stayed with Fiora on Ortigia several times and been privileged to enjoy her cooking.

And I've stayed with Nicoletta at Butera 28 and enjoyed her shopping and dining expertise.

For longer programs, you certainly would enjoy Divina Cucina (Judy Witts Francini). I believe she has in the past included a session with Nicoletta at Butera 28,

Cinque Terra/Florence: looking for Italian-brand canned tuna w/ cannellini beans in red sauce

I've never seen it packaged together, but I've never looked for it either.

But I DO love it and buy As Do Mar tuna here in the US or Rio Mare in Italy. And put it in the center of a plate, surrounded with canned cannellini beans. Yum! It needs really good tuna. If I am getting fancy, I mix some fresh parsley into the tuna, and surround it with olives or tomatoes in season or red peppers. Oh, and some good olive oil on the tuna and beans.

The tuna needs to be one of those really good brands, packed in olive oil as barberinibee says. I have noted lately that even Asdomar and sometimes Rio Mare are not really Italian tuna, but more often Portugese or sometimes Spanish. Really, it just means opening two cans instead of one, so buy them separately!

That latteria is a wonderful place, I've bought cheese and yogurt there often. But is there a place to sit down? I don't recall any tables, or even any coffee being served.

Campo de Fiori wine bars and breakfast

Caffé Farnese, on the beautiful Piazza Farnese, is a delightful place to sit and enjoy coffee and a cornetto or pastry. It IS a bit overpriced, but you are sitting on one of the loveliest piazze in Rome, lots of people watching including the activity around the Palazzo Farnese...

Problem with TripAdvisor et al

I don't put much faith in Trip Advisor reviews, and I do follow Katie Parla. And of course Maureen Fant. But I find the Trip Advisor Forums quite helpful; there if someone mentions a restaurant in the context of a post, you can at least see if the person is a regular poster rather than a shill put up by either the restaurant or its competition.

Best restaurant gems in Sicily??

I've not been to Taormina (yet!), but I did have a lovely lunch in Agrigento at this place ----- Trattoria dei Templi. I am not as serious a foodie as some on this board so I always hesitate to recommend, but I have more or less eaten my way through lots of parts of Italy. The food and service were wonderful.

Good luck with your choices!

Petak's Kosher Deli in Fair Lawn - New Ownership?

Wow, that would be awful. I love Petak's.

Part of the change is that the store was COMPLETELY wiped out by Superstorm Sandy; they were closed, and doing catering from an offsite location. I was there a couple of weeks ago and at least some of the help was the same.
I didn't get any cold cuts, but their famous cranberry chicken tasted pretty good.

Restaurant Week 2013 for vegetarians?

I've got a reservation for lunch at Locanda Verde in Tribeca with a friend. Unlike many other restaurants, they haven't loaded their special RW menus with shellfish and meat sauces.

Re pannacotta --- it's rarely strictly vegetarian as generally made with gelatin.

I love Petak in Fairlawn. They also deliver to many shuls in northern NJ

They are not a full-service caterer but rather a place that will deliver platters, etc.

Rome

Yes, I just saw the same thing! I love(d) their spaghetti carbonara, with zucchini as a delicious substitute for pancetta.
A friend had told me that they now have two menus, one meat and one dairy, so I checked and, of course, no longer under rabbinical supervision and no longer claiming to be kosher but rather "kosher style"
