America's Test Kitchen cookbooks .... favorites?
Got an email that there's a clearance sale (I seem to get an email from them re: a book sale at least once a week)...
Are the books any good? Anyone have a favorite book by them?
I generally like the TV show and love Cook's Illustrated magazine (Not too fond of the Cook's Country host though!)
Thanks.
Chinese soup cookbook
This is great...thank you for the info everyone. Gonna try to make a soup or two before the weather warms up.
Chinese soup cookbook
Has anyone come across a good cookbook (in English) with recipes for authentic Chinese soups? I'm thinking of non-Americanized soups using ingredients (like white fungus, chicken feet, etc) from Chinese markets...medicinal soups like ginger/vingear/pig feet for ladies who just gave birth...
Thanks!
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
Haha yeah that thought occurred to me. Greasy fingers.
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
Update:
I cooled down the mixture and chilled the vodka before adding.
And I doubled the cups just in case...but found out that it wasn't necessary after all.
Thanks!
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
Yes janetms33 mine are like but slightly bigger.
I like the paper cups better too for the peeling back reason!
Great tips...I'll get everything as cool as possible.
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
Oops, I meant I use hot water and I replace the cold water with vodka!
I'm pretty sure my cups are not meant for liquids...more like little samples at food stands. I'm trying to think of a quick trick to keep the liquid in there from leaking.
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
Yes, I'd like to use the cups I already have....
When the jell-o recipe on the box calls for water, I use vodka instead.
How to prevent jello shots from leaking
I recently made a batch of jello shots using 1 oz little paper cups and a lot of the jello mixture leaked right through the cups b/c they were more permeable than I thought. A little more than half remained and solidified in the cups.
I still have about 100 of these little paper cups left and I want to use them for another batch of jello shots.
Does anyone have a solution for sealing the cups so that they don't leak again? (I don't want to use plastic cups b/c they'll just sit in a landfill...)
Maybe a coat of PAM on the outside?
I want to enjoy beer, but I don't. Can you help me?
Hey! I was exactly in the same boat with you just a few months ago. I'm a 35-yr-old who recently started to like beer after thinking that it tasted awful. It happened after I moved to Brooklyn (where everyone seems to drink beer). I went to a BBQ that served nothing BUT beer so I actually found that I liked a Hefeweizen I picked up and became hopeful about liking beer .
In the last 6 months, I've grown to like these beers:
Blue Point Toasted Lager
Sixpoint Sweet Action
Goose Island
Anchor Liberty
Chimay
Red Stripe
Sam Adams Brown Ale & Winter Lager
Saranac Brown Ale
Fin Du Monde
It was a lot of fun being a guinea pig for my friends who helped me discover what I liked/disliked. I was lucky to start the process in the summer with the wheats then moved on to the fuller-bodied when the weather turned cold.
In general, I think it's important to nail down which "category" you favor (I seem to like the toasty nutty flavors) and move on from there. I don't like IPAs b/c they seem too bitter to me.
Enjoy!
Favorite Thai dessert recipes (in a cookbook or blog)
Want to tackle all those coconut milk, black rice, tapioca desserts I come across in restaurants. Anyone have a good source for recipes?
Excellent Japanese near Linden?
He loves Japanese but it doesn't necessarily have to be that....I'll take a look at Nagoya...thanks!
Excellent Japanese near Linden?
Driving from the city and will have a car the whole day (it's a treat!) Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check komegashi out.
Excellent Japanese near Linden?
I will be near the Linden airport and am looking to take someone to a very nice Japanese lunch for his birthday. We will have a car so I'm willing to travel a few minutes (preferably on the way to NYC, as we'll end up there later in the day).
Any ideas?
Thanks!
New York Times Braised Lamb recipe: Tried it yet?
I'm considering making the braised Braised Leg of Lamb With Olives and Celery Root Purée recipe from the New York Times last week.

Has anyone tried it yet? Any other simple, braised lamb recipes that are tried and true?
Casual lunch near Brooklyn museum
Cafe Shane on Washington Ave is about three blocks away. Reliable diner-like food.
There's also Tom's Diner but they have odd hours and often have a line on weekends.

Noodletown's Entire Staff Retires ??!!
Haven't been there lately but I do hope those grouchy cashiers are gone. They were the meanest meanies!
Assortment of sprinkles/jimmies?
NY Cake and Baking Supplies is SOOOO expensive! Just visited them yesterday. I think I'm better off at the supermarket.
Wholesale fruit (for an event)
I haven't had any luck finding someone! I think Chinatown is the best bet. Or asking the grocer for a deal on a crate.
Assortment of sprinkles/jimmies?
Is there a store in Manhattan or Brooklyn that sells a wide assortment of colored sprinkles for ice cream?
Pork Tenderloin: Gone bad?
Thanks for the replies! I learned my lesson the semi-hard way (without eating it!)...just gonna throw it away and make sure the next time I buy tenderloin I cook it right away. It's just packed in a plastic bag from the butcher not that super-tight plastic packaging. Thank you!!
Pork Tenderloin: Gone bad?
I purchased two pieces of fresh pork tenderloin on Sat from a well-regarded butcher in Chinatown. I planned on cooking it today (Wed) but when I opened the bag, it had a strong sulphur smell to it. It's only been 5 days. Has it gone bad? Should I throw it out? I'm new to preparing pork tenderloin so I need help! It was just a $10 investment, but I'd really like to know how long I can keep it in the fridge before I cook it. I've been storing it in the bottom, coldest drawer of my fridge.
Wholesale fruit (for an event)
Does anybody here have experience buying large crates of fruit from a wholesaler? I'm hosting an event for about 200 people and need to buy a crate of limes, and a crate of blackberries. Should I just go to Chinatown since it's already so cheap down there? Tips?
Thanks!!
Downtown Manhattanite moving to Park Slope
Noodle fanatic, I have to admit that i feel your pain and am thankful I found this thread. I recently moved from Bayard St in Chinatown to Park Slope. Not only am I having difficulty adjusting to finding cheap delicious places to eat in (hard to beat $1 dumplings, buns, etc downstairs from my old apt) but it's been hard to find fresh produce, meat, fish. I've been cooking a lot more these days. So far, I've been eating at ZuZu Ramen, Sheep Station, Oaxaca, Bogota Bistro, Los Pollitos, Ghenet and Alchemy.

Cocktails good for pitchers, BBQ
Very nice! Thanks. Nocino and Falernum are new ingredients to me. Is Ja Mon" a Jamaican drink?
Cocktails good for pitchers, BBQ
Thanks! These are great ideas. I was originally thinking of doing a spicy grapefruit margarita...and I'm Ok with getting everyone wasted on Manhattans!
:)
Cocktails good for pitchers, BBQ
I'm hosting a big event/BBQ for 175 guests. Hoping to do it pitcher-style since we'll have just 2 bartenders.
We'd like to have 2 signature cocktails on hand, one sweet, the other not too sweet.
Any ideas? Inexpensive ingredients would be a plus. It should also go well with BBQ.
Thanks!!
