Need Rec for Lima, Peru near airport if possible

This coming Sunday I have a 7 hour layover in Lima en route to Argentina. Is there anything worth checking out that is near the airport? Or should I take a taxi into the city. Also what are taxis like in Lima? Any info would be great because I didn't realize how long my layover was till today and have no information on Lima.

Thanks!

SF party of one?

Bar Jules you can sit right in front of the "kitchen". Menu changes daily, more like Le Pigeon than Momofuku with straight forward California cuisine. Open for lunch and dinner

SPQR and A16 you can watch pizza being done or pasta being flipped in pans.

Pizzetta 211 is a personal favorite, but it is a little out there and if you are going to go out to this district you might as well make a day of it and explore all that it has to offer.

I would attach links but this option is not working for me!

Authentic Neapolitan Style Pizza

Yes now that I think about it, I probably would have noticed a wood fired oven in that small place. It is probably the thinnest I have ever had. Best kept secret in SF but it probably is not so secret anymore.

Authentic Neapolitan Style Pizza

I must say I enjoy Beretta more than Delfina, but not as much as A16. I also prefer Beretta's Roman style pizza to Delfina's cross of NYC/Napoli. Also no one mentioned Pizzetta 211. I forget if it is wood-fired or not, but none the less worth the trip to get that pie!

Zuni makes great pizza in their wood-fired oven, but I believe A16 is as close that you will get to Napoli on this coast. Though I wish we could transplan Lucali's from Brooklyn, or UPN.

Bakesale Betty- Fried chicken sandwich, am I missing something?

Just went again yesterday to check it out. They do have brisket but you have to ask for it, since they do not list it. Much better than the chicken, loved the potato chips in the sandwich, horseradish was a bit over powering but pretty good. It is different since they first opened.

Bakesale Betty- Fried chicken sandwich, am I missing something?

When it first opened I lived right down the street, it was amazing. Then I went back two months ago and it was "ok". Though better than most fried chicken dinners I have had recently and for a fraction of the cost. But yes it has become ho-hum. Though the counter girl gave me 3 free scones for no reason? She asked if I wanted to try some. Maybe she got me mixed up for someone else, however it was a nice gesture.

They used make a stellar brisket sandwich that seems to have disappeared, but I am not in Oakland enough to make trips to see if it still exists.

Livestock Auction: Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair, 5/23

I have only participated in the eating part of the ordeal but I can give you some of the information that I have gathered.

You are going to spend a lot to purchase a whole animal ($400-$500 is what I remember), I would go in with a group of people and split up the costs however this might be tricky when dividing up the butchered parts. Though a whole beast will feed you and 3 others for a year more than likely. However, they do butcher the animal to your liking. So you do not have to have 4 large parts of a pig, you can have the "typical" sections butchered for you. I am not sure about delivery. Maybe this If I find out more information from my mother I will re-post it!

Pican in Oakland: Review

This sounded great. After trying Brown Sugar Kitchen and Farmerbrown I was a bit disappointed in "soul food" in the Bay Area, but now I will have to make it over to Pican.

SF (Haight) The Little Chihuahua - Mexican French toast, plantain burritos, wild mushroom tacos, chile verde tofu?

I must say this was the worst carnitas I have ever encountered. So dried up and just bland. I do however like the idea of the "Baby Super Burrito" but their overall I did not like the beans (undercooked) and the avocado/sour cream/and cheese were not properly distributed. An investment in lard would go a long way.

The chilaquiles I had were like nothing I have ever seen. An orange colored sauce coated the chips and basically was the equivalent of stadium spicy nachos. No egg included.
I get the whole Niman/Rocky ordeal and I am sure they will do well with "health" conscious eaters. But I am not going back, I need my lard. I was hoping for some decent Mexican in the Lower Haight / Divis area near my house.

Does anyone live in Dogpatch and walk by the space that Urbino will be opening in? Anyone know the est. time of opening? I did some eater searches but everything was dated from August. Looking forward to another Appleman venture.

Coffeehouses/Bars open late in Healdsburg and Napa ?

Healdsburg - good luck finding any coffeehouses open late in this "sleepy" little town. But bars are never a problem.

John and Zeke's - typical townie bar with all the accessories you can imagine from cow-town hicks, Hell's Angels, Chico-state kids back home on break, (restaurant) industry folks, wine-makers to tourists. Bartenders are great and so is the jukebox (if you you want to pay the extra fee to actually hear your songs). Last call is at 2.

Barndiva - classy bar with great cocktail list. Don't go for the food, just drinks. They also have coffee tea, they usually close around midnight on Friday/Saturday.

Ravenous - bartender keeps this cozy spot open till 2 on Friday/Saturday. I forgot how the cocktail list is. Wines by glass are decent and run-of the mill drinks are always made accurately. Great coffee and tea served also. I think the kitchen closes at 12?

Not late night spots but definitely check out Cyrus for cocktails (and food if you are willing to spend).

Flying Goat coffee during the morning / day.

Would add the links but the function is not working for me, sorry!

house made pasta

Perbacco for a great lunch/price point.
Quince for elegance (also not bad at all price wise but it will all ad up)
SPQR does all the Roman classics with fresh pasta which turns out to be impressive because those dishes are meant to be made with durum dried pasta, they do a fabulous job.
A16 also has some handmade pasta on their menu that is delicious.

Two specific "fine-dining" questions

FDL used to be fabulous. I remember going there when I was younger for anniversaries, birthdays, special occassions, then I went a few years ago even before it was dropped off the 100 List and it was horrible. Some places just go down hill.

I can't say much about the Ritz because unfortunately I have never gone. Though a friend of mine works in the kitchen and it sounds like they are doing fabulous stuff. I have never really heard any major complaints of it being "snooty". I find more "snooty" front of the house staff in casual neighborhood joints or hip restaurants more so than fine dining restaurants who really want their 20% off of that average $200.00 tab so they work for it and are very helpful to first time customers.

"Only in San Francisco" Restaurants

This post is extremely old but thanks for floating it back.

I really do not understand the Tonga room..I went there when I was a child and then again for a going away party a few years ago. Overpriced drinks, dried up desacrated I can find a better egg roll at a Chinese buffet at 2 am, not to mention the service is just plain rude! Plus the "fake rain" is so hokey! I would rather go to Harry Denton's Starlight Room and suffer.

My list of places -

Chez Panisse
Zuni
Tadich Grill
La Taqueria
Blue Bottle Coffee
Genova's Deli (oakland)
Saigon Sandwich
Tartine
Original Joe's (RIP)
Bi-Rite Creamery
Boulevard
Millennium
Tommy's Joint
Incanto
Walzwerk

I would also have to say A16, SPQR, Delfina....but plenty of cities have regional Italian cuisine, though I feel those 3 do an excellent job of it. Incanto made the list because I have never encountered anything close to his flavors/preparation and that sums up the phrase "only in San Francisco". Boulevard seems odd on the list but I had to choose one of the Kuleto restaurants because it is a prime example of "only in San Francisco" with it's unique decor and always stellar menu.

Babbo -- Twice in One Week Too Much?

If you want to go three times walk-in and ask to sit at the bar; 5:00 is usually a good idea. But if you want the whole dinning room experience keep your reservations. I never knew getting a resy there was so hard. I guess I am spoiled from living in NYC.

Abraco - Coffee Heaven Lands on 7th St.

I am resurrecting this thread. I love Abraco, and it is the best coffee in NYC and possibly all the Burroughs. As a former and going to be yet again SF'er, Blue Bottle was the only coffee I could drink (ok and Philz) and I was all out of sorts when moving to NY. The cortado is simply heaven and helps me survive my 12 hour shifts in the kitchen. The sweetened iced coffee is a perfect treat on a hot day. Also the pain au perdu, olive oil cake, rose/lime cake, and olive oil cookies can't be missed. I have also noticed the prix-fix menu they have from 12-4 for $15. There might be little standing/sitting room but Abraco has a big place in my heart.

may issue of gourmet, anyone?

I bought this at the checkout stand hoping to find something interesting on the long subway home, man I wish I could return it!

It was so utterly boring. I read the whole issue and realized this is why I never renewed my subscription 2 years ago and why I just go through recycled ones at work. Food being my life (I am a line-cook), I never have time off let alone the money these places want. The recipes were so-so. Sigh.

Belly in Freezer

I bought a pork belly on October 22, 2007. It was frozen/packed by the farmer and then given to me. Is it ok to cook or should I throw it in the trash?

On the way to The Cloisters....

Tomorrow I am heading to The Cloisters. I have done my research on CH but do not really want to sit down and eat at any of the restaurants near the museum. I would like to stop along the way for a sandwich (to go) and treats (to go) along the Upper West Side and then continue my way to the museum. If you have any recommendations besides Zabar's for sandwich shops and bakeries along the A line, give them to me!

Thanks!

morandi?

I have never been to Jane but see lines for brunch all the time. I would try August in the West Village for greet Med. style food, Lupa for pasta, or even Barbuto. Call in advance for 6!

morandi?

Don't go, but if you have to stay away from the pastas. The antipasti is good but everything else is pretty mundane, furthermore over-priced for what it is. Then again that is what Keith McNally likes to do. Okay I will say the rabbit ravioli I had was decent, not outstanding, it was run as a special. My dinning partners had the carbonara and spag. with clams, completely overcooked, dry and just awful. You might have a different experience though, but compared to other pasta-driven restaurants in this town I would skip it.
