Any good nurseries for cooking herbs in NJ?

Hi all. Does anyone know of a good nursery in Jersey that might have cooking herb plants in the early spring (like next month)? I am in Summit, NJ and looking for a nursery with in 20 miles or so. Also, I work in the city so if anyone knows of a NYC plant store that might have cooking herb plants ready early would work too. Thanks in advance.

babka

I am addicted to that one too. I also have a guilty pleasure of eating the one from Zabars. : )

Any restaurant rec's near 105th & Broadway?

Hi all. I am going to Smoke Jazz Club this Friday (Between 105th and 106th on Broadway). Does anyone know of anything within 15 blocks that would be nice? I would like to stick to a fairly reasonable price (entrees ~20 bucks or less). I am going with someone who doesn't eat red meat/fowl. He is keen for anything vegetarian or a restaurant that has at least 1 good fish dish. Thanks.

Fish and chips?

Hi all. Does anyone know if a good place to get fish and chips?

Saturday brunch on UWS

I am a fan of Sarabeths. Any place that makes home made jam gets my vote.

Cheap-yet amazing-food in Portland, Oregon?

Hi SauceSupreme. The thread you sent is titled "Seriously cheap food (pdx)". What is PDX? Is that an abbreviation for Portland, OR? When I did my search through the boards, I used Portland, OR as a search term and didn't come up with anything. Just curious.

Cheap-yet amazing-food in Portland, Oregon?

My best friend and I are going to hang out together in Portland, Oregon next week and we are both fairly poor. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to go for cheap-yet amazing-food in Portland? We both love any/every kind of ethnic food the world has to offer (spicy is a plus) and we are both beer-o-philes. He lives on north Broadway near the Rose Garden Arena but we are up for any restaurant that we can get to from public transportation. Thanks!

Looking for the best microbrewery in New Jersey

Thanks! I will give it a try.

Looking for the best microbrewery in New Jersey

Hi all. My birthday is coming up on 3 March and I wanted to go out with my friends to a microbrewery in New Jersey. What is everyone's favorite?

Need ideas for a special birthday in New Jersey

My friend has a birthday tomorrow and I want to take her someplace really nice. She lives in Bedminster, NJ and wants to go someplace within 30 minutes from home (i.e. New Brunswick area, Summit/Short Hills area, Edison area would be OK.) She is Indian and therefor wants to avoid Indian food given that she eats it every meal of the day. She loves lamb and seafood.

Please help me come up with something really nice. Price is not a concern.

What do people eat in Norwood, MA?

Wow! Thanks for the great recs. At least I can daydream about good Lebanese/Thai food during 10 hours of meetings. : )

What do people eat in Norwood, MA?

I have a business trip this week to Norwood, MA and Walpole, MA. The towns are apparently south west of Boston. Is there anything that anyone would recommend in the general area?

Why can't NY understand the croissant?

Sarabeth's bakery on the UES or UWS has great croissants.

NJ PAC Dining

I have no idea about the Liberty Science Center but I can help you with dinner near NJPAC. It is near/part of the Ironbound section of Newark. That part of Newark is renown for its Brasilian/Portuguese food.

I love the restaurant called Brasilia. They have amazing rodizio as well as some great regional dishes.

Also, you can't go wrong with Solar Do Minho. The food is delicious and they have good rodizio.

Also, Seabra's has great Portuguese food. From what I understand from Portuguese friends, it is authentic.

There was a fairly recent debate on this topic on chowhound if you need further info: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/340702.

Also, you can go to this blog: http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/ if you want pictures of the food at the restaurants.

Best "joints" in Manhattan.

Amen to Bereket. I eat there all the time.

I disagree with the staff being gruff. I find that I get hit on the whole time I am in the place so I take my food to go. I usually take it over to Roosevelt Park/ABC Park on Houston between Chrystie and Forsyth. It is a nice park in which to eat hummus and warm pita bread, red lentil soup, and too much baklava.

Your Favourite jarred goods

Sweet baby ray's barbeque sauce, Paul Newman's black bean and corn salsa, Rao's Vodka Sauce (for pasta), Bionaturae apricot jam (I can only find this at Wholefoods), and Sarabeth's apricot/pineapple jam.

Anything worthwhile in and around edison?

My favorite Indian restaurants are Shalimar and Moghul. Both are on Oaktree Road which seems to be the heart of little India in New Jersey. Shalimar is casual and less expensive and Moghul is fancier and more expensive. Both are amazing. The only place that I have tried that I didn't like was Rasoi on Oaktree Rd. I know a lot of people who like it so perhaps it is just the dish that I tried.

gay friend's bday

Food bar has a lot of eye-candy men, according to a friend of mine.

Food bar
149 8th Ave
(between 17th St & 18th St)

Duvet is not a restaurant known for being gay or straight but it is fun because there are no tables--just beds. Everyone eats dinner (sushi/asian cuisine) on a bed and because you are lying on a bed with about 6 others, it feels a little naughty. It might pick up your friend's spirits.

After dinner, you could take your friend to a bar to find a new boyfriend. This one tends to get good reviews by my friends who are gay.

gay friend's bday

I will violently second foodmonk's comment about Lucky Cheng's. I hadn't been there before and I took my friend there for her birthday. The chineese food is below sub-par, the drag show isn't a good version of a drag show, and the only people who go there are people at bachelorette parties. I am not picky and I can honestly say that I like almost every restaurant that I go to. I abhor Lucky Cheng's.

Barefoot Contessa packaged cake/cooke mixes

I don't generally eat anything from a box on principle but I have to agree that the Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Brownie mix is amazing. I am constantly baking and I normally make everything from scratch but if I am making a triffle or something that needs a batch of brownies, I always use this mix.

Cafe/Coffee House downtown for 3?

I don't know if the west village counts as downtown but my favorite coffee house in the whole city is Cafe Reggio.

http://www.cafereggio.com/

It has a nice selection of desserts and the atmosphere is nice. It is a few blocks from the heart of NYU country so one often finds college students or professors there. I wouldn't call it overpriced by New York standards.

Vegetarian restaurants in New Jersey: do they exist?

Wow, everyone. This is an awesome list. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

Vegetarian restaurants in New Jersey: do they exist?

I am a recent convert to vegetarianism and I am noticing that it doesn't look like New Jersey has a lot of vegetarian restaurants. Do they exist? I searched past chats on this website and didn't find a discussion that was similar. I love any kind of food: cheap/expensive/italian/mexican/indian/thai/chineese/czech/spanish/etc.. If there are not restaurants who specifically celebrate vegetables, I would settle for a vegetarian-sympathizer restaurant that has more than one choice for people on non-meat diets.

Thanks, in advance, for any advice offered.

Sorry guys, perhaps "fight" is the wrong word. As you might be able to tell by my log on name, english is my second language. I get worse at it every year. : ) I will try to chose words more carefully.

Just as FYI, I agree that this is a very pleasant chat room. I always meet nice people here.

Filler-minimal crabcake recipe?

This recipe is from the Arthur's Landing website (restaurant in Weehawken, NJ on the river). They posted it because they aparently got asked for it a lot. I have had the cakes there and they are great. I think they fulfull all of your requirements for minimal filler, no red pepper, containing spices, and being broiled.

5 lb. jumbo lump crabmeat, blue crab
2 large red onions, fine dice
1 bunch celery stalks, fine dice
1/2cup heavy cream
5 eggs, whole
1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce
5 tbsp. Old Bay seasoning
2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup Dijon mustard
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tbsp. Chervil, chopped
1 lb. Panko breadcrumbs

Tools needed:

Rubber spatula, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowl, mold to make crabcakes (not necessary), pound scale, sauté pan, canola oil or vegetable oil to sauté.

In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, heavy cream, old bay seasoning, salt, pepper and chervil.

Mix ingredients well.

Add onions, celery, 3/4 of breadcrumbs to mixture. Fold together with spatula. Let mixture sit in refrigerator for 20 minutes to help breadcrumbs bind mixture.

Add crabmeat folding in gently so we don’t break crabmeat into little pieces.

Place bowl covered back in refrigerator for another 20 minutes. Take bowl out make desired size and shape then gently coat all sides with remaining breadcrumbs. Place sauté pan on stove medium flame when pan gets hot add oil to coat 1/8 inch base of pan, sauté all sides till golden brown. Finish in 500 degrees oven approximately 6 minutes.

I can attest that the greasetrucks are still there. The fat cats are still being made with fervor. As I am sure you remember, they are best consumed at 2:00 AM when you are full of keg beer. It would be nice if the truck guys gave you a coupon for a half-off angioplasty at the hospital afterwards but so far they have not persued this business option.

Hi RGR. Sorry that my post started a chowhound fight. I do agree with you though (on the gelato part). I used to live in europe (London) and I traveled a bit to Italy and I thought the same thing that you did the first time I ordered a Rita's gelati: this isn't gelato. I often consider my first great love affair to be tiramisu gelato. I cheated on tiramisu gelato with strawberry gelato and occasionally nutella gelato. (it was quite scandalous) Once you get used to european gelato, it is hard to accept the Rita's version. I am still a fan of the ices though (as judged by the fact that I ran out in today's hurricane/monsoon storm to get a mango ice).

Despite your distaste for Rita's, I will still eagerly read your posts. : )

Are there any diners left?

I think all of the diners you remember must have relocated to Jersey. Diners in Jersey are about as thick as Starbucks in Manhattan.

Wow, RGR. We finally disagree on something. I have to admit that I am a big fan of yours. I tried Lorena's in Maplewood solely because you recomended it. You are always right on the money with your posts but on Rita's Italian Ice, we utterly disagree. I eat the wild cherry ice almost every day on my way home from work. The mango flavor is the bomb, as well as the coconut. I think you should give it another chance. It has a big following here in Jersey so perhaps you just tried some wierd flavor that they stopped making or something.

Welcome back home. I hope you have a great trip.

Pizza: I totally agree with Pete and Eldas. I would also add Grimaldi's in Hoboken, Star Tavern in Orange/Montclair, and Spiritos in Elizabeth.
Chineese: I am partial to Waterlillies in Summit.

Also, if you are looking for "Jersey Authentic", you should try to make sure that you hit a Rita's Italian Ice while you are here, as well as a dog from hot dog johnny's in Butzville, and hit a rodizio place in Newark's Ironbound to round out your trip (I vote for Brazilia but you will see other opinions on this).
