Calgary: local specialties, must-try dishes?
I moved out of Calgary just over two years ago, so some of these restraunts may not still be there, which would be a shame.
For shwarma/pita/donairs try Sammys on the south side of 17ave between 11st and 12st, in the base of the ugly pink apartment building. He spices and cooks his own meat, pickles his own veggies and is very generous when filling the pitas.
For indian try Tiffin roti and curry houses, on 28st se, just north off memorial, by the China Rose. Just a scoop and serve curry, with rotis made in house (you can watch them being made), it is cheap, good and full of indian families. It is not fancy but I was always happier there than any other Indian restraunt.
And the greek place in the gas station on 17ave and 26st sw.
Looking for a locally sourced caterer in Edmonton
Any suggestions? Referals? Thanks.
Cheap good Places to eat in Calgary and Edmonton
In Calgary, the best shawarma is Sammys Egyptian, 17thave sw, south side, between 11 and 12 st, bottom of pink apt building. All home made.
Silver Dragon for DimSum, its in Chinatown. Best indian is Tiffin, north of memorial drive on 28th st? (the lights just past max bell ctrain stop going east on memorial). The ukranian places at either farmers market are excellent, thats about a close as I get to fast food. Or Tubby Dog, hot dogs, 17th ave sw, north side, between 9th and 10th st.
And the best Veitnamese is Codo, 17th ave sw and 14st, across the street from mcdonalds.
In Edmonton, don't bother with Pagolacs (at least the one in chinatown) go a couple of doors farther south to the Golden Bird, way better.
The sandwiches at the Italian Market are good, but the ones at the Italian Bakery in chinatown are better.
Best chinese resturants in Edmonton
Well for canadianized chinese food I like All Happy Family on I think 103ave/101st. The last time I went to pick up my order I was the only white guy there. The vegetarian chinese place around the corner is really good to.
For Dim Sum we like New Tan Tan on 97st/Jasper is really good.
My friends who used to live in Van like a place on 105st/105ave (I think) or 109st/105ave next to bridal/tux shop. Don't know the name though.
Have to go try Lingan, everyone I know seems to rave about it.
Edmontonian moving to Calgary; looking for FM
Actually as someone who recently made the move the opposite direction, I found the opposite. The Strathcona market (especially in the winter) had a few tables of winter vegetables and lots of non food stuff. And if I can't eat it I am not interested in seeing it at the market. There were many local/southern alberta booths at CB when I was shopping there, mostly hot house but still. But then I am more a local prefered than a local mandatory shopper so maybe that made the difference.
The Crossroads market is much more like the Strathcona one, except they separate their non food section out (and I do miss the Art Market upstairs).
None of the Calgary (or Edmonton) markets compare to 104st market in Edmonton and I am so glad it is back for the summer.
