Nice dinner in SD

Very enthusiastic recommendation for Bencotto in Little Italy...some of the best Italian food I've ever had...and I grew up eating east coast/new york Italian...

Dinner in the Gaslamp

No, you are right. It was extremely generous of them, and far beyond anything I had expected. Great customer service. That said, I wouldn't want to recommend them to someone based on a meal that is highly unlikely to be recreated in typical circumstances.

Dinner in the Gaslamp

Had a horrible meal at Donovan's Prime Seafood.....I did however write the management to express my concerns and they invited me back in for a 5 course dinner, cooked personally by the executive chef. This meal was unbelievably good...but probably not the norm of what you'd expect at DPS.

Dinner in the Gaslamp

Basically, stay away from 5th ave. While I haven't been/heard about all the restaurants there..every personal experience and first-hand account has been miserable.

Buying Organic Chicken Breasts

Anyone know a place, either local, or via the web, to buy organic chicken breasts at a decent price? Right now I can get them at Costco for $5.99 a pound. Was hoping there was a source that sold in bulk that could bring that price down a bit..anyone know of anything? Appreciate it.

Best Steak in SD

Well, Friday night was surprising. Cowboy Star was NOT all it was cracked up to be. Myself and a buddy ordered steaks. I ordered the 20 oz ribeye, he had whatever the 35 day aged one was. Waited almost 45 minutes after finishing our appetizers before entrees arrived. Steaks were EXTREMELY fatty, grisly, tough, and undercooked. I ordered medium-rare..this steak was very rare in some parts..unfortunately I didn't get to the more rare sections until I had eaten a about a quarter of the steak....and I don't like to be the guy who sends things back after eating a healthy portion. The flavor was good, but overall this was not a good steak and would not recommend.

Best Steak in SD

I am absolutely craving steak. I've been to Donovan's before and found it okay, nothing I'd go back for.

Right now I'm leaning towards Cowboy Star for tonight's dinner. I've grown accustomed to great steak, i.e. Peter Luger's, and while I don't expect that in San Diego...if you guys could point me to someplace that is head and shoulders above the local competition, it would be much appreciated.

Stuck in a rut...help this SD hound pleasse!

Nope, not expanded yet. I went on a Friday night last week...no wait whatsoever...Must have gone around 730 or so.

Hungry Lu's in Ocean Beach

The little sandwich cookies with raspberry filing and a drizzle of chocolate on top are AMAZING. I've been looking for a place that makes them like a bakery I used to go to back in NY when I was kid...this is almost identical. Unbelievable. Get them. Go there.

Best San Diego Mexican Food?

Super Cocina should be at the top of any "best mexican in san diego" list...

Best ethnic restaurants in San Diego?

Didn't care for Q'ero. Thought it was over priced for the quality. My entree came out a bit dry. Nothing particularly stood out.

For Thai I'm a big fan of Original Sab-E-Lee
For Indian, I love Punjabi Tandoor

Not sure since I had never been there before this weekend, but if they did, it's still not a very large space. Without knowing for sure, I would say no, they didn't expand yet.

Well, ended up going to the Smoking Goat. Girlfriend and I either had, or ended up spliting the beet salad, escargot, sweetbreads which were a special, stuffed quali, and the halibut which came atop a rissotto with crawfish and andouille.

Overall, very nice restaurant. Liked the vibe and service. Food was very good, highlights included the beet salad, sweetbreads, and halibut. Would definitely recommend and would like to come back again.

Loove Basic pizza.

Been meaning to go to Bice for a while too...anyone have any experience there?

In any event, I think you guys have given me quite a few new places to try in the coming months...many thanks.

Decided to try the Smoking Goat tonight...I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks guys..

Flavor I've been to a bunch, but not in the past 4-5 months... I'm fine driving anywhere really. Coming from Pacific Beach. Been to Q'ero and was less than impressed esp. considering prices.

I've heard some iffy things about Trulucks...but never been. Smoking Goat sounds interesting..

I'm a local hound, love these forums, and have been to a lot of great places as a result of recs. Seems I'm stuck in a rut, need someplace new and very tasty to go tonight...

Looking to spend about $50-60/pp, no wine...although less is certainly fine..we're not pretentious in the least. Any type of cuisine is fine.

Places I really like and have been to...

Benecotto, Whisknladle, Sushi Ota, Market, Bo-Beau, Cucina Urbana, Kous Kous, Cavallion..to name a few...

Appreciate any help!

Please critique my itinerary for 5 night trip to San Francisco (DID LOTS OF RESEARCH)

For the love of god..please replace Tartine with Knead Patisserie...

A 3-Day Weekend in SF in mid-March

I'm from san diego, but have been to SF almost a dozen times and dedicate pretty much every trip to non-stop eating. In my opinion, Mama's is no better than an average breakfast place down here, and certainly not worth the line. Never had Liguria, but have heard good things.

Pleasssee...if you want to avoid the touristy crap...skip Tartine and head directly for Knead Patisserie in the Mission. It's a very small bakery run out of another restaurant, but hands down, the best croissants I've ever had. Their other baked good are other wordly and blow the socks off of Tartine. It's not even close.

Perbacco is decent, althogh, I sense you can get better Italian food elsewhere in the city.

If you're in the Haight (panhandle area to be exact), Nopa is very solid for an afternoon snack (I have a ravenous appetite..may be more of a meal for a regular person). If you want to class it up a bit, La Folie is excellent, and portion sizes are huge, especially considering they are an upscale place.

Thats all I've got for now...hope it helps.

...SERIOUSLY go to Knead!

French Laundry or Benu or.....

Obv know about FL. Have heard great things about Benu. Basically, I want to go all out the next time I'm in the bay area. Money is no object (for this one meal). Which would you choose, or would you send me somewhere totally different? We are less keen on a great wine menu and moreso looking for the best possible food we can get. Never eaten at a super high-end place before...best places I've been to in sf have been la folie, gary danko...places along that echelon...many thanks for any advice!

Excellent Jewish Deli?

Where exactly have you been in NY that you are comparing these places to?

Excellent Jewish Deli?

Never...ever....evvvverrr go to a deli that serves pizza. Forget about Millers...never been, but that just doesnt sit right with me. Granted, I am a bit of a deli snob having been raised on Queen Blvd's best...but, if you are looking for authentic jewish deli food...I wouldn't expect to find it at Millers.

Vancouverites 4 day SF food itinerary-please let me know what you think?

Have you been to Knead? Haven't seen one person who hasnt ranted and raved about them..and later called them the best patisserie in SF.

Honeymoon to San Francisco in September 2012

Although, some may say a bit touristy...I would highly suggest getting a drink or several at Cliff House. You won't find a better view of the pacific ocean.

As far as restaurants goes...I'll give you a few of my personal favorites..

Cafe Baonecci for (imo) the best Italian style pizza in the city.
Swan Oyster Depot for fresh off the boat seafood
La Folie, although I've never been, its highly recommended (I'm going there for the first time next Saturday..ill let you know how it goes)
Avatar in Sausalito..just over the GG bridge...its an indian/mexican/italian hybrid place. Very unique and very good.

Check Michelin guide for some good restaurants..or of course, these forums..

Pick Two Napa Wineries for Me!

Perfect, thank you.

Can you recommend a different (better) market..or is Fatted Calf just fine?

Pick Two Napa Wineries for Me!

So I'm taking my girlfriend to SF for 4 days next weekend for her birthday. I'm going to take a day trip up to Napa one of the days. I'm not a wine connesiour by any stretch of the imagination. I can appreciate good wine, but thats pretty much where the extent of my wine knowledge ends. She's the same way.

I just want two wineries that aren't going to be super-touristy and too generic. After that, I really don't mind about too much else. A nice view would be a plus.

Schedule looks like this...

Winery #1
Fatted Calf to pick up picnic supplies (please name another market if you feel there is something better than Fatted Calf)
Winery #2

Thanks!

Cafe BaoNecci - Best Pizza in SF?

Been here a couple times in the past, and I'm looking forward to going back in a couple weeks. Admittedly, I haven't had pizza from every restaurant in San Francisco, but this place is unbelievable. Italian style pies with some of the best marscopone I've ever tasted. Has anyone else tried the pizza here? Any thoughts as to how it compares to some of the other joints (deflina, una, etc.) around town?

Can't-miss places in Noe, if any? New to the neighborhood.

Fattoush is AWESOME. It doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It's just really great middle eastern food done very well. Definitely under the radar, but a place I'd love to near.

Help.... food truck a request from an out of town guest

Coming from Indiana your friend could probably use some good Mexican.

Marisco's German Taco Trucks are parked in a few locations around town...you MUST take him there. Probably the best seafood tacos you'll have. The Gobernador is particularly good.

If you are looking in north county...Dave Du Jour is extremely good too. He does gourmet food items for a good price. I believe he used to be a chef in a high-end establishment before doing the truck gig.

Four Day San Fran Trip - Critiques Please!

thanks for the tips...I think whatever sushi place we go to, well be looking to order rolls, etc. We have a *very* good sushi place in San Diego we go to to get sushi and nigiri..probably looking for something a little different in this department.

Four Day San Fran Trip - Critiques Please!

I've really wanted to try Benu. Unfortunately a bit too pricy...La Folie is going to be the splurge meal on Saturday..Should I consider doing Benu over La Folie on Saturday?
