songs referencing food: your playlist

Tom's a great one for comparing the moon to fruit: he has one song about a "Grapefruit Moon," and in "Little Trip to Heaven," he references the "banana moon." And isn't there another in which he compares the rising sun to a fried egg?

Atora suet?

Thanks, all. I guess I'll just suck it up and use a substiute. No one will know, I'm sure.

Atora suet?

I've bought the butter-like brick of lard before for other things and it's different from the Atora suet. The stuff I'm looking for has a pellet -like appearance; it comes in a bag within a box. As I said, it's ultra-refined. The leaf suet is probably a much more authentic ingredient; after all, Dickens' Mrs. Cratchit wasn't busting open a box of Atora for her Christmas pudding. What can I say? I have an emotional attatchment!

Your idea of grating suet is a good one and I will go with that if I can't find the stuff I used to use in the UK. Thanks.

Atora suet?

I'm looking for a commercial suet to use in a traditional Christmas pudding. I know many butcher shops carry chunks of real suet at this time of year, but I must admit I'm looking for the ultra-refined suet, preferably the Atora brand that is widely available in the UK. Any tips?

Yep, WF bulk section.

Amusing menu gaffes - what's yours? [moved from Boston board]

I'm afraid I am responsible for my most memorable menu gaffe. As an American chef just beginning my job at a country house hotel in Scotland I put an Alsatian onion tart on the menu - meaning of course an onion tart made in the style of the Alsace region of France. What I didn't know at the time was that in Scotland an Alsatian is a German Shepherd! And we all know how the Brits are about their pets; the UK had a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals before it had a similar organization protecting children.

It took me ages to figure out why that damned tart wasn't selling!

Fairground food - the Big E

Glad you had such a good time at the Big E, cat! I'm the OP who was originally looking for guidance on good fair eats, but now - tragically - it seems that I will not be attending the Big E this year. Still, if others have benefitted from this thread then (* bows humbly*) my work here is done.

Fairground food - the Big E

Mmmmm...gorgonzola fries.....mmmmm.....

And pot roast sundae *does* sound intriguing. Thanks for the tip!

Fairground food - the Big E

Thanks for the AAA tip. Apple Flappens sounds like a twist on the hackneyed phrase "S*** Happens."

Fairground food - the Big E

The clam fritters are what I remember from my childhood (a good memory). That and the Welch's grape soda stand where they gave away free samples(ultimately, a bad - and quite purple - memory!)

Fairground food - the Big E

I'm not a huge cotton candy fan, but maple sugar cotton candy sounds fab!

Fairground food - the Big E

Yeah, the cream puffs seem to be a recurring theme! They're even mentioned on the Big E website. I'll definitely check those out!

Fairground food - the Big E

I'm hoping to indulge in some good old-fashioned junk food at the Eastern States Exposition next week. I haven't been to a state fair type thing in over a decade. Any recommendations for not-to-be-missed carnival delicacies? Funnel cakes? Corn dogs? Is there anything new on the midway?
