Eastcoast foods nob's Profile
Best Upscale Burger
I think good burger has to have good beef flavor without "doctoring up" with likes of caramelized onion with balsamic vinegar or all the other crap. It also needs to be cooked correctly where the meat stays moist and juicy and the bun makes all the difference. My favorite so far is Comme Ca (I can take it or leave the slaw that is served on top) and La Boheme used to have great burger but not sure if they still have it.
Scandinavian Festival @ Cal Lutheran 4/18 & 19
I have been missing this event every year and I am definitely making it this year. Anything in particular on the food front I should be looking for?
Beachcomber Malibu...anyone been?
I will agree with everything "malibumike" said and add it's Bob Morris restaurant so no one should be surprised about the bad quality of food & service. It hasn't been doing well and will give not too long before they fold.
SOBAN?
I went over the weekend and it's typical Japanese food done by Korean owners. Food is decent and service is decent but not real Japanes food.
Korean restaurant on Adams
Where on West Adams/Washington is this restaurant as it's really long road.
Boule Atelier
It's been closed for almost a month. This has been a thread while back and on la.eater, la times and other blogs.
Korean lunar festival
Hey does anyone know where & when Korean lunar festival is being held?
Sofra Kabab express - Mar vista/palm
My wife and have been driving by this place for about a month and finally decided to stop by tonight for quick dinner. It's located on 10821 Venice Blvd Los Angeles, Ca 90034. This is Turkish Kabab place inside of Halal market. We tried Falafel salad with home made Tandoori bread, Chicken Shawarma (Doner) sandwich and chicken Adana kabab plate which came with rice, salad, grilled tomatoes, grilled pepper and fresh Tandoori bread. I have been craving good doner sandwich since my trip to Germany and it hit the spot nicely with good yogurt sauce. This is not quite the same sandwich you would get in Europe but one of the better I have tasted in US. My wife really enjoyed the Falafel and chicken Adana with grilled pepper & tomato was excellent. The price is also excellent as we only paid $26 and some change. I would like to to see if any other chowhounds have tried this place and see what they think about this place.
Katana
This is not a place for dining but for drinking & people watching. Food is horrible, service is non existent but good looking staff & guests.
Ja Jyang Myeon - Korean Bean Paste Noodles
I just tried this place on Olympic & Vermont and it was just OK. The sauce was good but the noodle looked & tasted like spaghetti pasta. Is there any place that make their own noodles with their JJM?
New Japanese place next to Maxwells on Washington
Not very good one at either cuisne. This is same owner as Wharo Korean BBQ place on Lincoln. Soban used to be open for lunch then closed for lack of business and they are offering discount coupon if you eat at Wharo indicating they are in trouble already. Their food is not traditional and they try to be fusion but they fail miserably.
Bastide closed (gasp)
I heard they were going to close at the end of the year but I guess lack of business finally caught up to Joe Pitka.
Dakota's Westlake Village Gone
It looks like you can add Suki 7 to the list as only one year old restaurant just closed for lunch and there 's never anyone in there anymore. It's too bad as food was getting better and I loved their sushi from their sushi chef " Yuki". I also heard their other restaurant P6 and Ch 8 is doing even worse and they only have one chef between the two restaurants. Again too as I really like the changes on the menu by their new chef. I guess Amgen & Country wide layoffs are really hurting this area. I'll have to look for other places as I am in the area for business often so if you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.
Best croissant in LA?
I can't believe no one has mentioned Boule on La Cienega. They have the best croissant outside of Paris. It's extra flaky & crunch outside and fluffy and buttery inside. I am completely addicted regular butter croissant and also their almond cream croissant.
Do good baguettes really exist in LA?
Boule on La Cienega has the best hand made baguette. This is the closest to Parisian baguette I came across. It has nice crunch crust, soft middle and perfect crust to middle percentage.
Where is Walter Manzke
I heard through the grapevine that he will be at Drago in Westside as a partner/chef.
Visting from La La land and need real food & drinks
Thanks sis2catbat & swsidejim for your recommendations. I'm sure we'll enjoy both types of scenery.
Visting from La La land and need real food & drinks
Two early forty year old guys visiting from Los Angeles for USA world cup qualifying game next week for 2 nights and we need good food ideas and cool place for drinks. No budgetary constraints but would like something we can't get in California for food. Also place to go for good drinks and scenery two single guys would appreciate.
late night dinner in thousand oaks or surrounding area
P6 on Agoura rd is open until late and so is Suki 7. Both restaurant is open late and stay late for drinks
Bread_what are very best places to get bread and rolls in LA and OC?
I'll join right in for Boule. I am addicted to Hide's (Main bread guy from Japan) hand made crusty baguettes, flaky croissants and his amazing guyere bread. This has to be the best bread shop in L.A. Their caramel is also amazing and Oprah has on her O list as the best caramel ever.
RockSugar
Food - C+ at best
Service - B-
Ambiance - B-
This is white people trying to do Asian food without fully understanding the intricate balance of spices. Just like PF Changs uses all sweet hoisin flavors on all their dishes to cater to American taste, Rocksugar tries to do the same but fails miserably. There is a reason why all these traditional dishes have been around for thousands of years because it works. If you really want a great example of Pan Asian food you might have to fly to Seattle to try Wild Ginger restaurant.
Day Old Bread
Boule on La Cienega has the best bread by far in L.A and I'm sure they have old bread.
Geoffrey's- Basic Info please.
If you want great view of the ocean then go to any beach in mailibu and if you want decent food don't go to Geoffreys. This is one of the tourist traps that charges resort prices for bad food. Moonshadows, Dukes and Chart house is slightly better but all these restaurants have beach location disease which they only rely on location and forget about food & service. I would recommend Lobster in Santa Monica which has good but not great food and good view.
koba- korean food in west la
Koba is a place you only go when you can't make it to Ktown like lawgrl stated. The food is mediocre and price is high and not enough banchan for the price. I have a rule in not frequenting any ethnic restaurant that is not patronized by it's own people. There is another Korean restaurant called Wahru (Sp??) on Lincoln and they are just about the same as Koba.
Santa Monica/Venice - Interesting, good, <$12 Lunch Spots
I recommend French market cafe on Abbot Kinney, Sawtell kitchen on Sawtell, Cafe Brazil on Venus blvd and I second the motion for Mitsuwa.
Gyenari in Culver city for sale already
Does anyone know anything about Gyenari - Korean restaurant that has yet to open in downtown Culver city that's now for sale for over $7 million?
Bakery in LA area with good mini desserts
I like Boule on La Cienega. It's little pricey but I think it's well worth it.
Frozen custard in LA?
Neptune's net in Malibu which is right on the water is serving frozen custard. They actually ship in frozen custard mix from Mid west. I've only tried their samples while they were refining their recipe but boy it was good. It was definitely allot better than Silky Smooth at Beverly center. It's more creamier and has the right consistency.
Nobu or Matsuhisa?
Martiniman describes the difference quite well but I disagree with some of his recommendations. Stay away from Nozawa as his fish quality is poor (used alot of frozen fish), Katsuya because it's very basterized (small percentage is good) suhi, Urasawa is too expensive even though they get the same fish from exact same fish vendors as others and Sasabune used to be better when it was smaller. I would recommend Nishimura in West Hollywood if not Sushi Zo.
Difference between a chowhound and food snob
As a self described Eastcaost foods nob I take offense to comments about food snobs. Even though I made an effort to call myself foods nob because I think the name has bad connotation no matter what I am a food snob/hound/fan/critic/lover/hater because i am passionate about food. To layman all you hounds sound like snobs and snobs sound like critics without merit to restaurants. So who care what other people call us but only thing that matters is that we are all passionate about food.
