nyc hound driving from calistoga to LA, need recs
Great route. Stop in Carmel Valley for picnic provisions-shopping center at bottom of hill. Best lunch with views: Restaurants:The Highlands Inn (outdoor $$ as well as glassed in areas$$$$)-just a few miles past Carmel Valley; Ventana just past Big Sur $$$$; Post Inn $$$$$ near BSur. Many picnic spots: Point Lobos on ocean!!!; J Pfiffer Burns (sp) waterfall onto beach-postcard, just up hill from BSur...outdoor great view-Nepenthe,simple fresh. Then not much until Hearst castle in Cambria..next .Cayucos, Hoppe's , excellent $$$.
I would suggest detour at Cambria to Paso Robles area for wine, and then south on 101. 200+ wineries in this area-will be hot, though. Wineries:(big reds) Hunt, Justin, Opolo..Edna Valley outside of San Luis Obispo: Pinot Noir, chardonnay,syrah......
