What makes the Philadelphia Italian Hoagie different from the rest?

My favorite hoagie is from Lenny's in Roxborough. The "Godfather" is a family favorite.

Sarcone Italian roll with seeds (love the seeds) oil, sharp provolone and a variety of quality Italian meats.

To me an Italian Hoagie (Philly style) is about the bread - you really have to rip into the bread with your teeth, so satisfying. Oil (never, ever mayo) some places use a hoagie spread which is herb infused oil and vinegar mix, I can get behind that. Otherwise, no need to add the vinegar, but I won't shun it either.

As far as the meats go - as long it's high quality. Yes, salami and capicolla and sharp provolone are a must, anything else is a bonus. That said - I do like mortadella a lot.

The only spice I need is oregano, plus the mandatory lettuce, tomatoes and thinly sliced onion. No peppers for me - but I do like one or two peperonchini on the side, for a little kick at the end of a delicious hoagie.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Sweet Lucy's in the far NE.

I think the food is just okay, but everyone around me loves that place.

Las Margaritas

i agree with phillycarol, it's just a step above taco bell. in terms of menu items you will find also at TB.

my husband ordered the "senior porky" (pork chops) and they were very good. my tacos were average at best.

King Arthur flour

I get KA flour at Superfresh and Whole Foods.

wild boat in Philly area

I had a wild boar ragu at Melagrano recently that was delicious.
ETA - but don't know where to buy the meat, sorry. Maybe the Terminal?

Looking for best pho in Philadelphia

I also saw this place for the 1st time today on Bustleton (near Cottman). I think it's open, but i don't know the name. I will try to go during the upcoming week. I am not sure if it's the same place you are talking about. I also posted a question about this down thread.

Looking for best pho in Philadelphia

Pho Hao (or is Hoa?) I am pretty sure uses MSG in there pho. My only proof is that I saw a giant drum in the corner the last time I ate there. I am speaking of the one on Addams ave in the NE.

I like Pho 75 the best.

There is another place on Busselton Ave that i just saw - can anyone enlighten me to the name?

Sushi in NE Phila

I really enjoy Makiman, i do feel the service is a bit slow though,

Northeast Philly

I really enjoy all the Vietnamese places mentioned - including Viet Kitchen next to Taste of Portugal.

Once in a great while, I like Nicks Roast Beef for a greasy ruben or the Country Club Diner for a good wrap sandwich.
Don Giovannies for pizza.
Maki Man for sushi
I forget the name of the place on buselton - for good shwarma and falafel.

I need to try Manila Bay and Datillo's. Where is Datillo's btw?

And i also 2nd the Dutch Market. Great stuff there.

Processed Foods, What I eat & why. Jamie's Food Revolution has me thinking. What , if any do you eat & why?

I totally agree with you on this. I have been following this "Food Revolution" type diet for years and years now, and this just nails it.

I often don't post in these types of threads b/c there is just too much for me to say. Thank you for summing it up so easily!

Rosey's BBQ in Jenkintown

I have been there twice for lunch, getting the "Memphis", chopped chicken sandwich both times. I think it is wonderful, (better than Abners, which I ate at a dozen times)

My husband got the crunchy pork, what and out of this world texture combo! Thick, home cooked potato chips on a pulled pork sandwich! So good. I cannot remember if his had slaw on it. i think i will be getting that the next time we go. (oh yes, there will be plenty of next times!)

We also got the baked beans, which are amazing. I love smokieness and the meat chunks.

Girls' night out in Manayunk suggestions?

I agree with the previous poster. I also like really Burbon Blue on the side street. I want to say it's Cresson St, but I could be wrong.

Chabaa is delicious and remember it's BYO!

Have fun.

Philadelphia Winter Harvest Members?

I do a CSA through Farm to City during the "high season" so to speak, I was thinking of jumping on board with Winter Harvest after Thanksgiving when we will be around to pick up our box.

One thing keeping me from signing up is I have acess to all the producers goods (or very similar products) at the Reading Terminal.

Good Vietnamese restaurants in NE Philly? Recommendations?

I have now been to Pho 75 - which was excellent.

And today, we went to Cafe Saigon. The bahn mi (with chargrilled pork) was excellent! It was my 1st Vietnamese hoagie and I think I am hooked.

I was mistaken before, Taste of Portugal is closed on Mondays, not Viet Kitchen. Those are my last two places in the immediate area, along with Thom Huang.

Good Vietnamese restaurants in NE Philly? Recommendations?

Well I got "lost" (as in I went the wrong way on Adams) and went to Pho Hoa. (the chain restaurant) and had a good and totally satisfying Vermicelli bowl. My husband had pho with flank and brisket and loved it.

I know exactly where the Viet Kitchen and Thom Huang are. I think I will also being adding those to my list of places to try. Viet Kitchen is closed on Mondays, FYI. I saw it on the sign out front.

Thanks everyone!

Philadelphia restaurant dishes that you dream about

same here. :-(

This is my favorite dish I have in a very long time.

Good Vietnamese restaurants in NE Philly? Recommendations?

Hello chowhounds -

Can anyone recommend me a good place to try Vietnamese (specifically Vetnamese hoagies and pho) in the North East area.

I work in the lower NE (@ Adams and the Blvd.) and am looking to branch out my lunch options.

TIA!

A bag of BS!

You can mail the BS to me! I have an unnatural love for BS.

My favorite way to prepair them is roasted @ 400 degrees for 25 minutes with salt, evoo and minced garlic. (Garlic added during the last 10 minutes of roasting)

or shredded the BS and pan fry, adding whatever flavors you like. Also BMETB certainly applys here.

"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.

the 'tos family of products. Tostitos, Cheetos, Fritos, Doritos. I have such a serious weakness for those things that I don't buythem, b/c I knwo I will house the entire bag in a night. Family size will take a few nights.

And a bottle of wine, once it's opened, it's gone.

Food Odors at Work

not quite an order problem - but a food at work problem none the less -

This guy I work with goes to the grocery store on Mondays during is lunch break and buys fruit (a lot of what ever looks good) to have at his desk all week for snacking. By Thursdays a.m. when we get into work we have fruit flys. The flys die over the weekend, and come back the following week when he buys more fruit! It's so annoying!

We mentioned it to him, he laughs about it... and he has been cutting back on the fruit hanging around. Now it's one or two pieces at a time, instead of 1/2 a bushel.

best soft drink ever

I was coming here to post about Cel-Ray. I find in locally in Philly no problem.

What is not to like about a funky celery soda! Dr. Brown sodas rule!

Anyone have a minimalist kitchen?

I was going to mention I use my peeler at least on an every-other day basis. For cheese, choc, and of course veggies!

And my salad spinner about every two to three days for floating and swishing greens!

Vegan brunch/lunch recipes? Help?

I LOVE the temphe 'bacon' from Vw/aV! It's a must try.

Rounding up absurdity

Um okay, no "frickin sweden" for you then. I respect that.

It is very possible that the U.S. government will remove the penny from circulation, considering the penny actually costs 1.7 cents for the raw materials, minting, distribution and continuous circulating in monetary system. That’s reason that other countries in the same economic situation removed .01 of a dollar out from there currency, it simply costs too much.

The Penny Removal Bill has been proposed twice and while it hasn’t been approved yet, there are economists trying to make it a reality. (I’ll count on some people obviously not being for this, but I am pro, especially if removing pennies will help makes my dollar stronger!)

We would have round down for sales to the nearest multiple of 5 cents for sales ending in 1c, 2c, 6c, 7c, and round up to the nearest multiple of 5 cents for sales ending in 3c, 4c, 8c, 9c? Values ending in 0c or 5c remain unchanged. And besides, round only happens in physical paper and coin transactions. If you pay with plastic, you will be charged the actually dollar and cent amount of your purchase, rounding doesn’t factor in. We are just talking about removing the physical coin, not the concept of .01 of a dollar.

Rounding laws may have positive the effect, exact change would have be counted out if there is a law saying what is/isn’t lawfully rounded. You would easily be able to point out to some one saying, they missed your change by a nickel, dime or whatever if you didn’t receive the proper change back.

I do agree that people in establishments unlawfully rounding, deciding how much and to who is wrong. I respect property rights of all.

Rounding up absurdity

Do I think it's wrong what happened? Yes!

I do think our country need to get onboard with this though:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_rounding

Considering it works both ways, for the business and the customer.
