Where to find Sake, Mirin and Miso in NYC
At the Lobster Place?? Seriously? Was literally just at Chelsea Market this afternoon and didn't even think of checking there. Thanks so much!
Where to find Sake, Mirin and Miso in NYC
Just wanted to revive this.... I'm looking for mirin to make a dish tomorrow night, and was hoping to find it somewhere between where I work (west midtown) and where I live (west village - far west/north area) to save time. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Rough week, need comfort food...
Trattoria Pesce Pasta on First Ave in the high 50s has a really great chicken parm on the bone, and it's a pretty good value. Not exactly midtown though, but there's also a Pesce Pasta on 9th Ave in the 40s, I believe.
Help my dad love the West Village as much as I do
Thanks for these! I was actually considering Da Andrea, it looked like a good fit but wasn't sure how tiny/cramped it would be. It's definitely closest to my apartment though; employees only might also be good; as unhip as my dad is, he still likes a somewhat clubby feeling (ala Elaine's). I'll check out the others too and add them to the list so I'm prepared next time. That is, if I can ever get him down here again.. it might be long trips back up to the upper east side from now on, sigh.
On Centro, the first time I went, I agree the service wasn't good. The other night we had a wonderful waitress though, which really saved things in a sense (my dad is convinced there's no good help left in the city, so he's always happy when he gets a good one who he can chat with).
A little bit of order brought to Difara's
Finally took a day off from work and made it down there for the first time today, around 1:30. There was definitely a system -- a woman in glasses was taking orders on a pad, there was a line, and the place had the atmosphere of a church -- everyone quiet, hopeful and orderly.
When we first got there, there was actually some confusion with some customers over whose pie was whose, but it was quickly and calmly resolved in an extremely friendly manner.
Needless to say the pie was really incredible, and we waited less than 20 minutes.
Help my dad love the West Village as much as I do
My boyfriend and I recently moved down to the far west village, a few blocks south of Meatpacking. My dad came to visit for the first time the other night and it was a complete disaster. He used to buy meat in the area for his Queens restaurant (a casual Irish pub) and has the impression that it's very seedy, dirty and unsafe. He couldn't find parking so we ended up finding a spot a ways down 7th Ave, and in a fluster I chose Centro Vinoteca which was far too noisy and modern for his taste. Between the vicinity to the Meatpacking District, the parking and the restaurant he was cranky and disappointed and I really want him to love it as much as my boyfriend and I do.
So where can I take him to make this right? His favorite restaurant in our old location on the upper east side was Da Filippo, and his overall favorite restaurant in the city is the Parkside in Corona. So I'm looking for a place that's traditional Italian, comfortable with some space between tables and relatively quiet. Good sized portions, solid service and overall value would be a huge plus. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions...
anthos vs. bar room - restaurant week
I've been to these for r-week and was really impressed with both. I do remember wishing there was more choice on the Anthos menu, as the regular menu offered so many delicious looking options. The lamb shank was huge though and there were a lot of complimentary items like olives and spreads, which was great. (Although an aside on lamb shanks - I find that I always get shamefully tired of the lamb shank taste about halfway through the dish in question that I'd started to avoid it; I was proved wrong on this the other night at Centro Vinoteca, surprisingly, where it was absolutely delicious the whole way through.) Portions at the Modern were smaller but I think the atmosphere is probably more fun for a girls night out there than at Anthos.
Best Restaurant Wk dinner you've ever had
I agree that Restaurant Week typically ends up being a bit of a disappointment, but I always end up going out for it a few times anyway.
Favorite meals have been lunch at davidburke & donatella (exciting that they have dinner now, too); lunch at Cafe Boulud, Devi (basically the entire menu was available); Perry St and EN Japanese Brasserie.
Least favorites were Tribeca Grill and lunch at L'Impero.
This year I'm considering 21 Club, Cafe des Artistes and Lure Fishbar.
