Chocolats Privilege

Chocolats Privilege

Stopped in yesterday at the Atwater market location and purchased an assortment of 16 for $25

I LOVE chocolate and probably eat it way to often as my waistline can confirm.

I’m very disappointed by these chocolates, slightly bland, micro sized and quite frankly I don’t think they are too fresh.

Am I missing something? I would be curious to know other peoples opinions on this shop.

49th parallel coffee in Ville St-Laurent !!!!!!!!!!!! Could this be true?

The best coffee in St Laurent with a barista that takes his time to make it right.

The gelato is to die for with many flavours I never thought possible

A true gem in the area.

Breakfast and wi fi downtown or St. Henri

I have been to Cafe Joe a few times, while I find the food pretty good, its offset by the horrific service.
You can easily wait an hour for a breakfast sandwich and the waitress has the most ‘’I don’t give a dam attitude’’ I’ve ever seen. Numerous times I’ve seen clients come in after me and order the same thing and received it before me.
Clients are allowed to play any music they chose on the CD player so the type of music or loudness is completely out of control.
It’s nothing to see the staff chatting up regular clients at great length while you wait for them to fire your food.
Plus the general lack of cleanness of the place with the dead plants, ripped floor tile and baby seat ….. on the food counter has finally turned me off this place.

Midi Six, It’s not outstanding but quite decent. I’ve always received good service and I find it very reasonable

Rumors abound about the sale of Schwartz's

Hy Diamond must be in a state of shock selling for 10 million after he picked it up for pocket change.
10 million buys a great toupee

A good friend has been in the place when Rene Angelli arrived and made a scene that people were at ‘his’ table.
Now as the owner he can have a proper section built, roped off so now one has to be removed while eating.

Looking for... edible hibiscus flowers (in a jar)

Aubut has the product in stock.

Laksa anywhere?

Had the Laksa this past Saturday at Satay Brothers and it was outstanding.

They have it on the menu everyday, but they run out of it quick.

Best Greasy Spoon in Montreal

Chez John is a sweet place with a good breakfast & killer coconut pie.
It reminds me of a small town diner where the locals go to catch up on the gossip.
Every time I go I learn something new about my hood.

Green Spot is fun for its decor but the food is horrible.

New System BBQ never disappoints if I am looking for some greasy spoon food.
They make my fav pizza, a serious pie that so jam packed with ingredients I can never get pass two slices.

Decarie Hot Dog is nasty; I swear they haven’t changed their oil since they opened in the 70s.

I find the best Club Sandwich in Montreal can be found at Ruebens, the one in the basement near McGill College.
Its HUGE, with real chicken slices, not scraps or processed and served with mayo not Miracle Whip.

Where's the best burger in Montreal

I had a great burger today at MeatMarket, in my opinion the best I have had in Montreal.

Large size, super juicy triple A beef paddie, with spicy mayo, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, red peppers etc.
It came with potato & sweet potatoes fries, Harissa mayo & coleslaw,

A bruschetta salad was also included in the table dhote at $13.95

The service was very friendly and efficient.

Montreal smoked meat--The Main v. Schwartz's

I have been going to Schwartz's since I was a boy and they had sheets of wood planks as floors.

I go less and less as I find so often I am disappointed.
Over the years the quality has greatly dropped and the consistency is non-existent.
The quality of the meat changes drastically, although my order is always the same, large plate med fat.

I was there this past Friday and it was terrible, super dry, stringy, tasteless.

Like throwing the dice at the casino you never know what you are going to get, but when it’s good it’s in my opinion the best in town. That said, unlike the casino your meal shouldn’t have to be a gamble.

Unfortunately the past years it tends to be more of a miss then a hit.

Baked goods in Montreal...

Sweet Lees Bakery in St Henri is fantastic with their handmade cookies, cakes and tarts.
Try the espresso & hazelnut butter square or praline maple pecan & pear cheesecake, so delicious.
Everything is so fresh and the sister and brother team are super nice.
They have a shop opening soon but at the moment they sell their products at the local markets;

This is the list of locations as per their website;
Thursdays at Metro Verdun 2-7pm
Fridays Metro Atwater 2-7pm
Saturdays Parc St-Paul 9am-3pm
Sundays Parc Sir Georges-Etienne Cartier (St Henri) 9am-3pm

Cafe Saint-Henri Micro-Torréfacteur

A great new café near Atwater Market and lucky for me a few steps away from my home
” Saint-Henri Micro-Torréfacteur”

Opened by the people behind Caffè in Gamba, they will be roasting their own blends on the spot.

They have this stunning machine called “La Strada” that is the Rolls Royce of espresso machines.

Tried the espresso and Colombian blend and both were outstanding

Each Wednesday they have informal tastings of their blends and as of Feb will be conducting tasting classes.

Finally great coffee in the hood!

Leonidas chocolates at Costco!!!!!!!!!

Davyboy, I love you but my waist curses you!
Your post encouraged me to go to COSTCO to check out the Leonidas chocolates.

I bought a few boxes and I can say that they are the same product sold in the stores.
The exterior cover wrapping is different but once you remove that, it’s the same ballotin. There is no fancy ribbon or bag, but the contents are 100% fine Leonidas chocolates.
I have purchased these in Brussels and at the duty-free, I don't know they can be priced so low at Costco, they are a steal!

In order to provide as justified opinion I sacrificed myself by enjoying a few rows.

The ballotins contain milk, dark and white chocolate, filled with butter creams, Ganaches crisps and caramel. They are excellent!

Leonidas & Neuhaus are my favorite type of chocolate in this style; Godiva is a mass commercial product that I don’t enjoy.

Bottle of Champagne... SAQ?

Brent I have to disagree with you. I had an office in Burlington where I spent Mon-Fri and returned home for the weekend.
Naturally I would stop at the duty free and rarely drank my purchases in Vermont but brought them back with me to Montreal.

After a long time of doing so, on my return to Quebec the CBSA agent saw the alcohol on the back of my seat in the plastic duty free bag.

He asked if I had bought it at the Highgate Springs Duty Free to which I answered yes.
I had been doing for awhile and thought it was completely legal, the whole reason of me not hiding it.

He informed me that “duty free” items had no duty rendered on them because they were to leave the country thereby not taxable for duties as they were in “transition”. This is why at the duty free shops you are asked for your license # and asked if you are going into the states and at the airport why the duty free is beyond the check in and located in the international/USA part of the airport.

As some times mistakes are made I decided to contact CBSA and verify the information, at which time it was confirmed.

Funny thing, not one person in my office was aware of this rule and many had been doing what I did.

The 48hrs is your personal exemption for liquor or tobacco bought outside the country. Once that exemption is exhausted all other items are subject to taxes & excise duties

Bottle of Champagne... SAQ?

At what border are you crossing into the US?

When driving to Burlington Vermont I usually stop at the duty free at Highgate Springs just before entering the US.
Their prices on liquor are great and wine good.
I recently purchased Veuve Clicquot $49 (SAQ $67.25) & Charles Heidsieck $48 (SAQ $60.50)

The law is that when you purchase at the duty free you must be going to the USA and consume the product in the USA................

The duty free at Dorval airport is a total rip-off, the prices are very similar to those at the SAQ!

The duty free in the USA are much better, I recently saw Veuve 2btl 750ml package for $60 at Chicago’s O’Hare. Two weeks ago I saw at a retail store in New Orleans Veuve for $35.
Seeing those prices just makes me crazy and more determined to make my purchases outside of Quebec.

As you are going to NYC my experience has been great at Astor Wines & Spirits 399 Lafayette (at East 4th St.)Phone: 212-674-7500
A few months ago I bought Pol Roger $34, Veuve $38, $70 Vintage & Charles Heidsieck $37
If you are into wine & sprits you will be in heaven and make sure to check out their extensive Sake collection.

If you can’t make it there, don’t worry, at any store you will get a better deal than at the SAQ

La Maison Kam Fung - horrible service

In my experience the secret to good Dim Sum is to go early as soon as they open. The food is fresh and less hurried, plus give a list to your waiter and they will usually get the items you want with out having to wait for the carts.

I have had bad service at Kam Fung; once when a waiter wanted to be paid immediately because he was going on break and when we got hell because we said we needed a table for three and were told that a 5yr old was not a person we should have asked for a table for two plus one kid!

I had a funny experience at Tong Por once went I went for dinner with a friend. We just sat down and were chatting; the waiter was very impatient and came by our table 5 times in 15 mins to take our order. We asked him to give us a few minutes, he returned and looked at us both and said F----in Guys. I looked at him shocked and asked him what he had said; we had misunderstood him as he had said “Fork and Knife”. It was an experience right out of Seinfeld.

Sutton,Dunham

Alphonse the owner of Nid de Poule is a great host and will spoil you.
The restaurant is small with a couple of tables and on the first floor of his B & B
I would make sure to RSVP

As BrentMTL mentioned most of the ingredients come from his farm.

He has some of the best Fois Gras and supllies many high end restaurants with it.
The rack of lamb is the best I have ever tasted.

At $50 plus being able to bring your own wine makes it one of the best deals I know.

Montreal Foodie visiting, looking for Napoleon House alternatives

Montreal Foodie off to New Orleans this week.

I have had a great time reading all your postiings about the great places to eat and have prepared a good list.

I was planning to have a drink at Napoleon's as I have been there before and loved it, but just found out that they are closed from July 5- 20.

Would it be possible to have some tips about places with the same atmosphere as Napoleon's and also good places to see live jazz, and if serving food a plus.

Many thanks

Service at Olive & Gourmando

Funny this topic should appear as I was discussing O & G with friends this weekend.

Good Cuban sandwich & great brownies but in my opinion not worth the wait or attitude.

I sum up my experience of O & G like this, 1st wait for a table, 2nd wait at the counter to order your food, 3rd wait at the other counter to pay for the food, 4th wait to get drinks delivered, etc.

All that waiting and my lunch hour is over.

Plus everyone with a sour face like they are being forced to work against their will.

Premiere Moisson

I greatly enjoy the breads, pastries, preserves and the Fois Gras at Premiere Moisson but find their prepared sandwiches and salads horrible.

In the last two weeks I have ate at PM three times (not my choice!) and each time I am left shaking my head and wondering what all the people in the long lines see that I don’t.

I have tried three different sandwiches and salads and all left me dissatisfied.

$14 for a small sandwich and salad with no taste.

Am I missing something?

Waterfront Lachine

I am not big on mexican food but I have been to El Messon and its great. The service is charming and the food is very good, would def go back.

Good news for Montreal chiliheads! Cuisine Szechuan

LOVE that soup, As others have mentions it is called Wontons in hot soup and strangely it is listed in the noodles section and not the soup part.

LAURIER BARBEQUE

Laurier Rotisserie is up for sale. The owner of the restaurant also owns the building and he is looking to sell both ASAP.

He has been cutting expenses drastically as he knows he is dumping the place, this may count for the bad experiences.

When I lived on Somerled I use to go to Cote St Luc BBQ but never found it great. One day I arrived just minutes after someone had been gunned down in a booth, that put the kabsosh on the place for me.

In my books you can't beat Chalet BBQ, always good and so inexpensive.

In Search of Montreal's Best Charcuterie

I really like the homemade Capicollo & sausages from La Campagnola in La Salle. They have a full take out menu with meats, sauces etc at their deli next to the restaurant.

Boucherie Tranzo on Somerled in NDG does a great homemade Porchetta; they roast the pig on the spit once a week so often it’s sold out quickly. Their sausages are also quite good.

Passing of Mila Oh (aka moh)

I am sad to hear of the passing of MOH and my condolences to her family.

I did not know her beyond her postings but felt a connection to her as her posts always left me nodding my head in agreement.

Her critique on Bofinger and Romados and her preference for Coco Rico, to her taste for L’Express were just a few of the many posts that always left me thinking she was bang on.

Often I found myself noting her suggestions and recommendations. I bought the Hibiscus flowers at my fav place Marche Transatlantique and plan to eat at Jun I.

When I have the pleasure of doing both I will surely raise a toast to her.

Where to find best Dim Sum

I like both Kam Fung and Ruby Rouge.
The secret to good Dim Sum is getting there early around 11am so you get the food hot and fresh.
I ask the waiter for a few things to start which they will go and get sometimes straight from the kitchen.
The rest you can pick from the carts. If you are there during the rush, often by the time the carts makes it to you it’s lukewarm.

Who can recommend a good Thai restaurant

Ban Lao Thai still great, bring your wine wine (SAQ right next door)
Its on Decarie & Decelles, next to the Cote Vertu metro station
I would call before going as they have strange hours.

I have had good Pad Thai at the thai place on the 3rd floor of Faubourg.

Bon Appétit Des Caraibes

Had an amazing lunch yesterday at “Bon Appétit Des Caraibes”

To start had a great Caribbean Pea Soup
Huge bowl of hot deliciousness, filled with yellow peas, carrots, rice, potatoes and dumplings in a wonderful tasty broth.

Had a hard time trying to decide over the boneless curry chicken, curry goat or jerk chicken. Decided on the jerk chicken and I wasn’t disappointed.
A huge plate with juicy tender jerk chicken, rice & peas, plantain, sauté veggies & a side of jerk chicken sauce.
Their jerk chicken rub is sweet with a good bite of spice.
A type of meal that leaves you saying WOW and cheap at $12.50 (Soup $3 & Jerk chicken $9.50)

In the past I have had the doubles, patties and boneless curry chicken and it has all been outstanding.

Another plus is the pleasant folks behind this place; always smiling and welcoming, which makes this one of my fav in my neighborhood.

Best foie gras to take home in Montreal

I have tried Premiere Moissan's Fois Gras Torchon and in the glass jar and both were excellent. They also sell a nice fig bread which is excellent with the Fois Gras

Also I have bought fresh lobes of Fois Gras from au Pied Du Cochon, expensive but fantastic!

ISO wine tasting /discovery course in Montreal, other than at the SAQ

I have taken Nick Hamilton’s courses and he certainly knows his stuff.

The courses are in his home on St-Denis Street, near Beaubien

His teaching style is very matter of fact, all business and when the course is done its time to get out, no time for chit chat.

This may rub some folks the wrong way for those who are looking to learn and enjoy the social side of wine.

A good idea is to contact the city’s wine agencies as they often organize wine tastings and courses at very reasonable rates. Their goal is not to make money on these activities but to build their brand and following.

Romados

What’s going on with my fav place Romados?

The last three times I have been it was poor.

The oil is no longer spicey, often the chicken is burnt and tasteless, fries cold and it’s just lost its edge.

The renovations are nice but it does nothing to speed up the line.

Having one counter person during a busy Thursday lunch is crazy. The sweet lady behind the counter even told me " When theres a long line I get nervous and lose my head"

The wait was 20 mins to get served and my colleagues were willing to put up with the wait but no longer interested in returning because of the past unfavorable experiences.

Has Romados lost its shine or am I just really unlucky?
