Santa Fe cheap eats...but tasty?

Without a doubt, our favorite spot in Santa Fe is Pepe's Tacos at 1945 Cerrillos Rd. A few blocks North from St. Michaels drive. It is a little place with about 6 small booths...The freshest Mexican Food in all of Santa Fe. There is a complimentary salsa bar and served with a great avocado sauce. Here is another viewers comments- PEPE’S TACOS, $, A mind-boggling menu of real Mexican antojitos in a psychedelic taco stand. Fresh and good. It outbeats any other Mexican Restaurant in Santa Fe!

Sugar's in Embudo, NM

Yes, they are very much open. It is up for sale but the food is as good as ever! I live in Abiquiu about 45 minutes from Embudo and go there often. Call first as their winter hours have changed. I think they are closed Tues, Wed ...call them - http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=1389

Sugar's BBQ--Embudo

Yes, Sugar's is still very much happening! Always a stop we make, when on the way to Taos.
They are closed Tues-Wed. Better to call first - Here is a link with their phone number.

Where to get the best taste of the SW in Santa Fe?

I always recommend Cafe Pascuals downtown Santa Fe for a unique breakfast with quality ingredients...http://www.pascuals.com Usually a wait, but well worth it. Some locals think other places are better, I disagree. It has festive atmosphere and it is expensive for breakfast , you get what you pay for, prime downtown location and quality ingredients.

If one the way to Taos, take the alternative high road and visit Penasco and have lunch at Sugar Nymph's Bistro, a great place with incredibly good food in the middle of nowhere.

As for a fine dining experience, nothing really compares to Geronimo on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. You really should do a search on the top of this page and type in Santa Fe....as there are so many reviews and recommendations. the subject of Santa Fe restaurants gets repeated over and over , so best to search for the reviews. Have fun!

Santa Fe: Adios Senor Lucky

I'll miss Senor Lucky's too! What a shame that owners couldn't notify employees in advance as opposed to just shutting the doors. Who knows what is going on with their other restaurant Geronimo, the best place in Santa Fe.

Advice on Santa Fe: Cafe Pasqual, Geronimo, The Compound, etc

Cheflauren- Yes, this is an old post that somehow was revived. Luckily all of the restaurants are still in business and the reviews remain the same after 2 years.

Santa Fe Favorites

I beg to differ...Lots of locals frequent the Coyote Cafe. In fact, in summer when the Coyote Cafe Cantina is open, it's mostly locals as is the main restaurant. The Pink Adobe also is filled with locals as is The Plaza Cafe. AS for the comment on Tourist traps downtown.... You might want to do your homework before making such bold statements and maybe be more open to all of our wonderful restaurants In Santa Fe. Wow, Maria's being the best in Santa Fe.....I guess you don't get out much, oh well.

Santa Fe Favorites

I totally agree with Alan regarding the Plaza, I love this place...Something about it , old time Santa Fe feel but with a modern atmosphere, great food and great servers who have been there forever. I also agree that Maria's is worth a stop, the food has slipped a little but the drinks and tequilla collection can't be missed.
Yes, on Pasqual's as well. Top nothch breakfast spot, prime location...Some people gawk at the prices, but you get what you pay for. Unique Breakfast items!
Yes also on the Compound, Coyote Cafe and The Pink Adobe is very, very Santa Fe. I have to totally disagree with the recommendation of The Tecote Cafe, I just don't get it. It's sort of a dump, sorry to say and the food is just so mediocre...I've tried it 4 times and it just gets worse. Maybe some locals like it because they meet friends there, My friends don't go there, We all go to Harry's Roadhouse for breakfast!

New Mexican restaurants in Santa Fe

After living in Santa Fe for 3 years and trying out restaurants in other areas. I have found that Santa Fe New Mexican restaurants are not nearly as good as other areas. I now live in Abiquiu, 1 hour north of Santa Fe and our restaurants in near by Espanola are far better, may not have nearly the ambiance as some Santa Fe New Mexican restaurants, but far better. Better chiles, hotter chile, usage of more traditional spices, more traditional recipes and usage of lamb too. Not as much usage of cheese like Santa Fe restaurants.

New Mexican restaurants in Santa Fe

I would seriously consider La Casa Sena. http://www.lacasasena.com The other places mentioned are fine, but too many imperfections. Why settle for second best, when you can dine here with no complaints about food, service or ambiance.

What is your favorite restaurant in Santa Fe?

Geronimo on Canyon Road, no doubt about it. The Compound across the street, Fuego at the La Posada Hotel, Santacafe. in order.

Albuquerque and Santa Fe Restaurant Recommendations

As there are so many wonderful restaurants in Alburquerque and Santa Fe, Your best bet is type in each city individually on the Chowhound search page. The restaurant reviews are numerous. And they good ones are mentioned over and over! Have fun!

Cafe Pasqual's- Santa Fe

I agree with Mutt too. Cafe Pascuals is a great place, You get what you pay for...They are in a high rent district, have nice atmosphere and all of their ingredients are top notch, not canned but fresh. Tia Sophia's is in my opinion, is just so so so, sort of tacky and run down. And the food is really not that great...I think the Plaza has great food too, I have never seen any vendors there??

Santa Fe away from the Plaza?

On Hwy 14 (THE TURQUOISE TRAIL) We always stop at the San Marcos Cafe, about 15 minutes south of Santa Fe. Funky, Good food, turkeys, chickens and peacocks all running around outside. Or the town of Madrid has a funky saloon that is supposedly pretty good and very different.
As for places outside the Plaza....The second street area mentioned in a previous posting has interesting places to eat. Canyon Road is not to be missed...Casual sandwich shop, Spanish Tapas Restaurant call El Farol , very good to upscale Compound and Geronimo. Also Cafe Sol next to El Farol is good too!

The Plaza is never as crowded as one would think, parking is always within a few blocks. Do a search on this board using the words Santa Fe and you will find many great restaurants! Have fun!

Need Sedona and Santa Fe info

Your best bet is to type in Santa Fe or Sedona in the search bar. There are thousands of recent recommendations. And some very good reviews and articles. Have Fun !!

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

Just to let you know, I do understand where you are coming from. The Mac and Cheese is $10. Here is the menu link- http://www.senorluckys.com/menuHTML.html
as for the service, let them know...they are grateful when you bring it to their attenntion. I am the first one to complain to management about lack of service or great service. It really makes a differance someetimes. Thanks!

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

I am glad you did praise the place for their version of Mac and Cheese. Being in the biz myself, there are always managers or owners on hand to assist you if there is a problem, They need to know, so they know there is a problem. I have made simple suggestions or even complained and been rewarded with a thanks, some comped food and even a gift certificate. Try it, next time.

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

I am really surprised at how many people out there, really think this place is expensive. Hey, It's a nice place. Have you seen the dining room and to imagine you can buy an entree for lunch for under $10 bucks! People, c'mon get real...This place is in the high rent district. There is parking around the corner in several of the pay lots. I think Senor Lucky's is far better than any other restaurant Downtown in this price range. The next best, one step up...In price, service and atmosphere...Is without a doubt, Santacafe.

Albuqueruqe: Places to buy NM Chile

Curious, on how recommending a website based in Pennsylvania will help CosmoM find green chiles in ABQ? The green chile stands that sell and roast chiles and not quite up yet, they usually pop up in parking lots etc. with their chile roaster. This is going to be the best crop yet, so they say. I live near Santa Fe and they also are sold at the Farmer's Markets. Try googleing Farmers Markets in Albuquerque to find one near you.

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

Did you say anything to a manager? This can happen at any restaurant. Senor Lucky's is a very reasonably priced restaurant with innovative food in a high rent district.

Sugar's BBQ in Embudo between Santa Fe and Taos is for sale! Oh NO!!

NO, it just went on the market... I think you are mixing it up with the Embudo Station down the road.

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

try this link for the menu- http://www.senorluckys.com/menuHTML.html

Senor Lucky's in Santa Fe

I go there about once every 2 weeks and love it! They have great roasted jalapeno Cheeseburgers...And really good, Green chile Mac and cheese. Incredible Calamari appetizer, the best calamari I've ever had with 2 unique dipping sauces. The service is just as good here as it is anywhere else, casual. And very resonable for a prime downtown location.

Paul's in Santa Fe

Unfortunately I will NOT miss Pauls. I thought the food was mediocre and passe. The restaurant had seen it's day and the staff seemed burned out. We look forward to the new place coming in soon.

Sugar's BBQ in Embudo between Santa Fe and Taos is for sale! Oh NO!!

Gosh, I beg to differ. What did you try? The Brisket platter and the Ribs served on Fri and Sat is very good, comes with a whole bunch of sides. I know we don't have much BBQ in Northern New Mexico but what we little we have, it's pretty darn good. One gets tired of green chile this, red chile that!

Mexican Lunch in NM

Try being more specific on your Posting heading....Such as "Suggestions for Lunches from Abq to Pagosa Springs"
I think you will receive more responses.

New Railyard Cafe, Santa Fe

I recommend you start a new thread. You will receive many responses. Senor Lucky's cuisine is categorized as Nuevo Western-Southwestern and Swig is across the street from Senor Lucky's. They had the same owners until they sold Swig. Ask the viewers about Swig by starting a new thread. Have fun!

New Railyard Cafe, Santa Fe

That's surprising. I had a very pleasant lunch there about 2 months ago. I was surpised at how good at was, the service and atmsophere were nice too. I think like most restaurants and especially in Santa Fe, it is hit and miss. I still really like Senor Lucky's at the Old Palace. Always good, innovative and great service and nice to sit outside in the festive patio.

Sugar's BBQ in Embudo between Santa Fe and Taos is for sale! Oh NO!!

pete- sugar's is closed on tuesdays! jeff

Sugar's BBQ in Embudo between Santa Fe and Taos is for sale! Oh NO!!

To be honest, there are really no BBQ restaurants to speak of in Northern New Mexico...seems like it's mostly green chile this, red chile that.

It's realy nothing fancy, picnic tables, with beautiful scenery and wonderful ribs and briskit.

This place received an honor from Gourmet Magazine as one of the top ten roadhouses in all of the USA.
