Vegetarian entree ideas for formal wedding

I appreciate all the feedback!

As someone who is really into food, I thought that menu planning would be fun! In thinking about why this has been so difficult for me, I realize that there are multiple reasons:

1) I have attended many catered events where the vegetarian dish is a sad pasta or vegetable plate. I really want the entree at my wedding to be special. I also want it to be filling. I hate it when I am handed a plate of grilled vegetables (with no protein) and then am hungry an hour later.
2) Many of the go-to vegetarian entrees just don't seem that formal or elegant to me (enchiladas, lasagna, etc). I want something more elegent and creative, rather then comforty classic.
3) The fact that it is a seated, plated meal seems to make this a bit harder. Presentation is going to be extremely important.

Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions. I am especially interested in harken banks, alanbarnes and sweetTooth's suggestions. Going to report back to the caterer.

Vegetarian entree ideas for formal wedding

We are vegetarians, who eat dairy. We do not eat meat for environmental and ethical reasons. It is really important to us that our wedding is in line with our beliefs. My parents were uncomfortable with a 100% veg meal, so agreed to serve a local, sustainable fish. (As a side note - it is quite common for there to be a fish and a veg option at Jewish weddings. I am pretty sure any guest who does not know us well will assume the meal is Kosher-style).

Some of our guests are vegetarian, but the majority are now. However, almost everyone could be classified as sophisticated eaters. Since we love to cook and go out to eat, most of our friends have that in common. I am not worried about anyone thinking the food is to gourmet, or that tofu is weird.

Thanks for the replies so far. The wedding is in September in DC. We are trying to keep everything local and in season, so thanks for bring up that point. I know some people do not like tofu, but I am wondering if it would be ok to serve it within a dish (as opposed to the centerpiece).

Vegetarian entree ideas for formal wedding

I am getting married this fall and am working with my caterer to plan a formal sit down meal for 130 people. My fiance and I are vegetarians. We will be having vegetarian and fish mains. We are having a hard time coming up with a GREAT vegetarian main. Our caterer, while extremely creative when it came to the apps, the salad and the fish, has not suggested anything for the vegetarian option that makes me very excited. However, the caterer is one of the best in the city where I am getting married, and I am confident that they can execute almost anything (that can be made in quantity, etc).

Just wondering if anyone has any great ideas... So far, I have just been collecting ideas from my favorite vegetarian restaurants (Greens in San Francisco, Candle 79 in NYC). We do not want to serve a pasta dish. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Best Pizza in Buenos Aires?

This post is long overdue, but I wanted to thank everyone for the suggestions, and let you where we ended up eating pizza during our trip. First of all, we ate a ton of pizza! We are vegetarians, and it is one of our favorite foods, so it was a logical choice while in Argentina. In fact, we probably had a slice of pizza every day!

Pizza in BsAs is not for the faint of heart. Such thick, doughy crust! So much cheese! It is a hearty meal. Pretty much every where we went we had mozzarella, tomato sauce and green olives.

Our favorites were El Cuartito (http://www.flickr.com/photos/s_r_p/3004118039/in/set-72157608665423210/) and Guerrín.

If these two favorites, I preferred Guerrin. The pizza was of medium thickness, and was perfectly crisp on the outside. I tried both a mozzarella/tomato slice and an onion slice (my memory is failing me on this one, and I guess I forgot to take a picture. I think it was onion and cheese, but can’t seem to recall it exactly. If anyone knows, please let me know).

In terms of thin crust, we tried Morelia in Palermo Hollywood (http://www.flickr.com/photos/s_r_p/3004127249/in/set-72157608665423210/)
I had a nice salad with my pizza. Overall, the pizza sort of reminded me of Matzo, so I was not a huge fan.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Best Pizza in Buenos Aires?

Next week, boyfriend and I are leaving for a 16 day trip to Argentina. We love pizza, and can't wait to taste the best of Buenos Aires. If anyone can suggest some pizza places, I would greatly appreciate it.
We generally prefer very thin crust (In the states our favorites are Pizza Picco in Larspur CA, Delfina Pizza in San Francisco and Una Pizza Napoletana in NYC), but are interested in tasting many varieties in Buenos Aires.

Many thanks!!

Scott Howard this Saturday ~ advice on ordering?

I was there in February. Unfortunately, the only thing on the entire menu that I can rec is the carrot soup and the cauliflower soup. I found the food to be mediocre and the service less then satisfactory.

I had:
• Cauliflower soup with ancho chile syrup
• Skate wing with hearts of palm and mussel & meyer lemon vinaigrette

My boyfriend had:

• Carrot broth with Chervil sabayon and Truffle oil
• Scottish salmon with Shallot confit, hedgehog mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and curry beurre blanc

Both of the soups were light and flavorful, all around excellent.

The entrees were another story. My fish (the skate) was o.k. Nothing to write home about. The salmon my boyfriend ordered was gummy and fishy. He had to send it back. The 2nd fish was better, but still mediocre.

My favorite part of the meal was when the Warm chocolate cake with blackberry coulis and crème fraiche arrived. The crème fraiche was melted and sliding off the cake. It was not warm. It appeared to have been sitting in the kitchen for quite some time (see attached photo).

Overall, I was disappointed.

Mamas on Washington Square does a nice egg while scramble. It comes with sliced tomato instead of hash browns, or you can get fruit on the side.
