Marche Jean-Talon or Marche Atwater?

You won't find fresh bagels at either market - pick them up before or after your brunch at Lawrence, when you'll be a few blocks away from both St. Viateur and Fairmount for bagels.

What does Montreal have to offer? June 30 - July 3

Dominion Square Tavern is a few blocks away. Brasserie T and F Bar are about a 15-minute walk, but because it's during jazz fest, you would have to reserve in advance to get a table. Ferreira (F Bar's big brother) is fairly close by as well. And while it's not a novelty to someone from NYC, the Daniel Boulud restaurant in the Ritz Carlton is opening this week (and is relatively close to your hotel as well)

Gvina Levana or Quark cheese?

um - perhaps Loblaws in the kosher section? Try the one on Cavendish and St. Jacques.

Wine Rack stores in Ontario, when will we get independent wine stores in Quebec?

The independent wine stores in Winnipeg were pretty underwhelming in their selection. Mostly middle of the road wines, not necessarily inexpensive, but nothing interesting. While Quebec and Ontario may be run by liquor monopolies, the selections we get are second to none in this country, IMHO.

Bachelor Party in Montreal...help

Le Chien Fumant would work. They do late night dinners, and it's owned and run by Joe Beef alum. Salle a Manger would also be good. Ice House doesn't take reservations AFAIK, so if the weather's good (or there's a game on) it will be hard to get into. Brasserie T is fun, not formal, but I think Chien Fumant would be a better fit for your group.

Openings in 2012

The people behind the cafe at Excentris are apparently the ones opening this. Should be soon, but not sure of the exact date. Hopefully it will be better than Wellhouse was - it would be nice to have a decent restaurant in Westmount for a change.

Last-Minute Itinerary Advice

I would switch your Schwartz's lunch with Jean Talon Market - the market is always better on Sundays, and Schwartz's is probably less busy on Mondays. Havre aux Glaces is at Jean Talon Market, so you should plan on having ice cream or sorbet for your dessert after lunch. Another ice cream place that should be on your "do not miss" list is KemCoBa. It's close to St. Viateur bagels (it's on Fairmount just east of St. Urbain). Worth a detour IMHO.
Joe Beef and APDC are not overkill - both are good, but different. Le Bremner is also good, and another possibility would be Le Filet.

Restaurant in Old Montreal for 6-15 person wedding reception

There's a cosy private room downstairs at Gibby's. While it's not my favourite restaurant, it might just fit the bill for what you want.

Where to eat in Ottawa [split from the Quebec board]

(Note: This thread was split from the Quebec board at: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/847326 Here's the original poster's request:

We will be making 2 back to back business trips to your lovely country. In Ottawa I think we are staying at the Lord Elgin. In Montreal we will be at the Le Centre Sheraton. We will be celebrating my birthday in Montreal and our anniversary in Ottawa. Suggestions for special places to eat in each city would be most welcome. We will eat anything that won't bite us first with the exception of sushi. Hubby does not like to get dressed up. We prefer local eateries to chains, and will have a car, so we can go most anywhere.

-- The Chowhound Team)

Ottawa recommendations are Beckta for a special meal, and Play in the ByWard Market area for a more casual meal (same owner, both very good food).

Restaurant Closings in 2012

Doesn't surprise me. The one time I ate there, the food was okay, prices had gone up, and the service was so slow (IIRC, it was around a 1 1/2 hour wait for our mains) and disorganized (albeit friendly) that we never returned.

Jean-Talon Market 2012

They have it on occasion at Fromagerie Atwater - same price ($30). I'm sure it's good, but I haven't bought it.

Montreal Bachelor Party - Memorial Day Weekend 2012

I've been with a group of 18 to APDC, no problem with being at one large table, so they can definitely do it. Definitely an option. If you really really want steak, Queue de Cheval is the place to go (and it caters to plenty of Montrealers, not only tourists - I've been there, although it really doesn't touch places like Peter Luger's...)
Forget about Rib'nReef. Forget about Mexican.
+1 for Sake Bombs at Imadake, also agree with DNA, Joe Beef , Salle a Manger for dinners (now that Joe Beef has expanded, they should be able to accommodate a group of 13, as long as they have availability).

Take out sushi in NDG/Wsmt, centre

Kim in Westmount Square has very good sushi - they do takeout, but I don't think they are open most evenings, so you would have to plan and order in advance (depending on the day)

Small plate/tapas style Resto for TONIGHT (Sat)

Le Bremner or Le Filet might also work - but not sure what your chances of getting an earlier reservation at either on a Saturday night would be. There's also Tapeo.

One dinner. 4 guys--need recommendations and evaluation of other choices

If you want good food, skip Cavalli. It's a bit of a scene, but that's it. Late dinners are easy to find here - it depends on what you're looking for, but if you read a few of the threads here on late-night dining, you will likely find something.
Some suggestions - Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Nora Grey, Brasserie T, DNA.

Is it legal to bring an already opened bottle of wine to a BYOB restaurant ?

Sorry, I wasn't replying to the OP, I was correcting Mangoannie, who said that "you cannot bring or leave with opened bottles of wine".
Still have no idea as to whether you can arrive with one...

Is it legal to bring an already opened bottle of wine to a BYOB restaurant ?

AFAIK, if you bring a bottle of wine to a BYOW, you are allowed to leave with the bottle. But if you buy a bottle from a restaurant you cannot. I know anytime I have been at a BYOW and not finished my bottle, it has never been an issue to bring the remainder home with me.

Breakfast and wi fi downtown or St. Henri

Mariani's service speed is not exactly one of their strong points...especially now that you can only order from your table, not at the counter, if you're eating in the restaurant.

Where to eat with kids?

And whatever version of steak frites they have (not beef, but usually venison or some other red meat, which is typically much better anyways).

Where to eat with kids?

Places like Holder are more than happy to accommodate kids - they will make up half orders of steak-frites (or at least they used to - I assume they still do ) and the like, or let kids share. Pretty much most bistros will work - Lemeac and L'Express (although it's not my favourite) are also options. Dominion Square Tavern might work - it's quite close to your hotel. If there's a chance you can get an early reservation at Au Pied de Cochon, that would be fun. La Banquise for poutine, if you really want poutine - open 24 hours - and they also have hot dogs for less-adventurous palates.

Where to eat with kids?

You can take kids to almost any restaurant in Montreal without a problem. There are a few threads on this board, which you should find if you do a search.
As for Beauty's, it's probably the same as it always was, but be prepared for a long lineup (and hence long wait), which might not be fun with 2 small kids.
As for Jardin Nelson, while the space is nice, the food is sub-par. There are many better places to eat in this city. Let us know what area you're staying in, or what parts of the city you'er looking at, and I'm sure we can come up with some suggestion.,

Best food experiences Montreal for the money spent ...on a budget

La Montee de Lait is closed. You can cross that one off of your list.. Kitchenette is very good, but not exactly downtown - although IMHO worth a trek for dinner. And my preference for pizza is Jane - it's a heavier pie than the others, but something you definitely won't find in Halifax. Instead of Ferreira, you might want to try their other resto, F Bar near Place des Arts. I would add La Salle a Manger to your list as well.
5ieme Peche is not open for lunch AFAIK, and I would pick Brasserie T! over L'Express any day, for lunch or dinner.

Montreal in May - Must Eats for NYCers

While it is across the street, Burgundy Lion is not the same people as Joe Beef. Liverpool House next door is, though...

Openings in 2012

I would say it's the worst Chinese food I have ever had, except to actually call it Chinese food would be an insult to the cuisine. Disgusting, flavourless stuff. I am always amazed that people like it (and that includes most members of my family!). Not that I'm biased or anything...

Le P'tit Plateau

I was just there a few weeks back. No difference in anything that I noted - still as consistent as usual - although unlike on my previous visits, the majority of people dining there that evening were anglos.

Quebec City for the weekend, recs?

I would guess the main reason you haven't gotten responses is because the subject has been covered many times in the past few months - if you do a search of this board, you will find several threads discussing all of the above-mentioned restaurants, as well as many others. Should answer all of your questions.

L'Autre, Europea, LeGrain DeSel

Have you considered P'tit Plateau? As far as BYO's go, it's my favourite. Food is always consistently good.

Reservation Trade at Tickets?

We went just after 9 pm on a Thursday night, and there was an 8:30 pm no-show (they have to wait the requisite 20 minutes after a reservation time before they can give away a table). Granted, there were only 2 of us, but the other option you can try is to check in with them at the start of the evening for cancellations, as these do happen.

Where did Jamonisimo go?

Their web site also puts them as C / Provenca 85, unfortunately. Which is where we went. Oh, well... next time...

"In 1996 the first Jamonísimo store opens its door. Inside you will find the best Iberian hams, knife-cut by hand, and other Iberian products.
As well as other gastronomic delights

Where did Jamonisimo go?

Tried to go there last week, and the signs are gone, and it was empty. It was disappointing, to say the least. Did they move, or did they close?
