Dinner in Altoona
I love The Altoona Hotel, and Burley's. The best two places in Altoona.
Dinner in Akron tonight for a homesick UA student
Thank you so much, it sounds perfect.
ELEVEN, Strip District, Pittsburgh
I was there last Monday, and with a friend had the entire appetizer menu for dinner! So good.
Altoona area
The Altoona Hotel. We had a special occasion dinner there in January in the wine cellar which seats about 12-15 people. It is a white table cloth place, with a good wine list, but pricing is not that of a big city. We had a limited menu for the party but the skirt steak and the crab cakes were both excellent, as was the salad. The upstairs has a lot of nice windows. My in-laws live in Altoona and my mother-in-law says that the Altoona Hotel has a special pizza that people either love or hate, with American cheese on it, she loves it!
Another place near the boarding school that you are referring to is Burley's in Tyrone.
We have eaten at Burley's on many occasions, and have had them cater something for us in the past with great success. Both restaurants have really good food.
I would make a reservation soon for either place.
Pittsburgh-Vegetarian options near Warhol museum
Right at PNC Park is one of the locally owned Atria's. Not necessarily vegetarian, but many options there. And you can walk from the Warhol.
Anyone been to Avenue B in Shadyside (Pittsburgh)?
The web site is www.avenueb-pgh.com
Ideas for Pittsburgh rehearsal dinner for large group (45-50 people)?
I hadn't thought about PNC Park before but the Lexus Club there is pretty nice.
Cocktails on Mt Washington? (Pittsburgh)
I agree. The best view from Mt. Washington.
Convection oven question
I have a new oven with convection options too, and I am trying to learn how to cook with convection also! Yesterday, I baked two batches of different cookies and I noticed that the shorter time given in the recipe was the time that both batches were ready. My oven has a thermometer that you can put into, say the turkey, and the sales man suggested I use it. He said that everything will look brown quickly, but not be done internally.
Pittsburgh Catering
Catering by Linda Ionotti and All in Good Taste are certainly at the higher end of the spectrum, however, they are both fantastic, I have been to events that both have catered.
Help a DC chowhound find some good food in Pittsburgh
As far as the Casino goes, I stopped and had a drink at the bar at Andrews, they had just opened the doors when I was there on Sunday. The wine prices are appalling, $12.00 for a glass of Fish Eye wine which retails for $7.99 at the state store. The nice wine man upgraded me to something else for the same $12.00. Anyway my husband and I were sitting at the bar and three guy's came in and ordered the calamari. When it came it looked soggy, and it must have been because three orders went back to the kitchen. One guy got a steak and when it came it wasn't evenly cooked.
I ordered the green tomato, lobster stack, and that was wonderful. Thinly sliced green tomato's fried in a cornmeal crust, and lobster with tarragon cream drizzle. My husband had a plate of oysters that he said were "OK".
That is all I know about the food.
Yo Rita - Taco Heaven
My husband, and daughter and I went to Yo Rita last night for dinner. KS was not there, the waiter said that he was cooking at the Andy Warhol last night. We started with incredible ginger margarita's. This is the best cocktail I think I have ever had. Then we went to the jimica chopped salad, it was wonderful with cantelope, honey dew melon, the jimica and cabbage in it, not sure what was in the dressing but it was HOT. I kept coming back to it though, it was addictive. My daughter had the yellow tomato gazpacho, nice and smooth, but under seasoned, it needed more salt, pepper and vinegar. My husband had the chicken liver taco and my daugher and I had the black eye pea one which we all really enjoyed.
can anyone comment on Legume,Dinette or Toast in pittsburgh?
PghJen,
When I was there in February, my friend ordered a beer and the server told us that no one ever orders beer, and the staff were the only people who would drink them.
can anyone comment on Legume,Dinette or Toast in pittsburgh?
Toast! is very good, very interesting and tasty menu. However, they have no beer, not even a bottle. The bar is all wine. Also, I have noticed that on the weekends if they get busy, you are there for a very long time. I am not sure I would want to be committed to a show time.
Legume--love it. Being BYOB really helps keep the cost down.
At any of the restaurants mentioned, it is important to stay off the parkway and use back streets to get to Heinz Hall or any downtown location. All three of these restaurants are located in the East End and therefore easily accessible to downtown.
Altoona area
Fanilli's and the Allegro are both excellent but expensive. Zack's food isn't very good, but it is the hangout place in Altoona. Lot's of beer and burgers.
Kaya (Pgh)
Kaya has a good Happy Hour, drinks are half price and very tropical, and made well.
"Wegmans wins beer ruling"
I was at the State College Wegmans on February 13 and I was really surprised to see huge cases of six packs and individual bottles of beer!
Good local breakfast in Pittsburgh
Square Cafe is just OK, if you really want a good breakfast head for Drew's Family Restaurant on Ardmore Boulevard, also known as route 30. Very close to Edgewood, and on the way to Monroeville.

Best Almond Tort - Pittsburgh?
Whole Foods also makes Almond Torte, I had it once and it was very good.
What's your favorite hot sauce?
Oh boy, at my house it's D.L. Jardine's Texas Champagne Sauce or nothing.
Desperately seeking Irish Bacon... in Philly and 'burbs
I saw it once about three years ago at the West Shore (Harrisburg) Farmers Market and had been searching for it ever since. Last week I was at the Whole Foods in Pittsburgh and they have it! It's the 365 brand and the packaging says that it is "new."
Brunch/Breakfast Pittsburgh
I am a big fan of Drew's Family Restaurant located in Forest Hills on Ardmore Boulevard. They have all of the basic breakfast items very well prepared, and their soups are generally interesting. The owner told me that they leave a pot of stock on the stove every night to make the soups. The breakfast potatoes are really good.
Wilkinsburg
I have not been there yet, but the City Paper had a good review, and I have heard that there are lines out the door for the Sunday Brunch if that helps.
Steelers Fan Club in Los Angeles
I would say that chipped ham BBQ would be a must. Just have the deli shave (chip) a good quality ham and then add Heinz Chili sauce and ginger ale to taste, and add a dollop of Heinz pickle relish.
Sunday Dinner in State College
You might try the Autoport Restaurant, they have a motel there, near the Ramada.
Falafel in SF?
I was in San Francisco last week, while on my way to my hotel I noticed a restaurant called Persimmon Cafe on Sutter near Mason Street. I ran in for a quick bite and their falafel was so good, it had caramelized onions and lentils inside of them. Everything else was very good too.

Homey Pittsburgh restaurant for Thanksgiving?
My sister made a reservation at the Omni William Penn. She said that each table gets a turkey of their own, carved by the staff. I think she said the cost is $49.00.
