They are mostly hightops with "regular" square tables for 2,4,6 in the back. I put it in the same decor category as Blind Burro or maybe Southpaw Social, rather than a formal place.

Went last night to the friends and family soft opening-full disclosure: food was complimentary and it was a cash bar. Nice inside, mostly high top tables and the music was at a level good for conversation. Fresh made tortillas made in front of patrons near the bar (both corn and flour) were perfect. I've have undercooked and burnt before, and these small light tortillas came out just right. The appetizers we tried were the Crudo, nice white fish in a light citrus. Cilantro was not overpowering and it was flavorful as is, without needing any additional spices. It came with freshly made blue corn tostadas. Also had braised market greens (interesting mix of chard, kale, mustard greens, little potatoes, roast garlic and a little cheese. It's an appetizer, but I had mostly with the fish main course and tortillas and I liked that combo a lot. Also shared the Caesar salad with jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were really impressive. Three jumbo shrimp, seasoned and warm on the salad. We cut each shrimp in half and the appetizer was easy enought to share for 3 to 4. For mains we tried everything. Two fish dishes and I was impressed with both. The fish of the day was (I think) yellowtail, dusted with achiote and cooked firm but moist. Again, just great with the plentiful small tortillas and the market veggies. Also had a full fried fish (snapper) on a bed of garlic rice. It was easily removed from the bone and tender enought that I could eat the cheak (sp?) just like at a good Chinese restaurant. Still more: tried the Carne Asada torta. Nice sides like smoked mushrooms picked jalapeños grilled onions and a big side or garlic fries. At $12.00 this was the deal of the day. Also shared the wood fired Jidori chicken. Comes with frijoles (good!) garlic rice )also good a good flavor match) guac and pico de gallo. Mains are priced from 12 to 24 (for the fish) with most under 18.00. Apps are from 7 to 11 (for the Crudo) with most priced at 8.00. I liked everything. No negatives but the next time I would order the Caesar salad with dressing on the side and as each main course have very unique flavors and spices, they don't lend themselves to family style sharing. The mix of everything together isn't as nice as the individual plates. I like the restaurant addition to the Gaslamp quarter. It's unique enough to me that I'll go back and try the rest of the menu.

Sit down Mariscos in Chula Vista area

My old favorite, Mariscos Godoy has closed. Can anyone recommend a replacement - great food, margaritas, a place you would go for dinner tonight with out of towners? Has anyone tried la Perla Negra, the Mariscos Godoy replacement? Thanks!

Meatball Cuccina (sp?) is closed. Finally. Loved the concept, but not the execution.

Need Recommendations for nicer place to watch monday night football

Quite like Stout (just left actually), as it's off the tourist track, and not so crowded in the evening. HH until 8:00 and the sliders are $2.00 each including choice of cheese. Enough people watching the game to be social, but I could still get a seat at the bar.

San Diego foodie sites other than Chowhound [moved from San Diego board]

Just checked it. It's off to a good start. I can think of several CH San Diego board members who should apply for the editor job for their SD board.

Best meal in Santee-open to all

Cheers all. I think I'm Jonesing for excellent Thai, and I know Sab-E-Lee 1 does that, so worth trying the other branch. I'll send a report on the weekend.

Nice. I've tried the Linda Vista location, and that sounds like a good call.

I need me some soup (92101)

I had the minestrone at Napizza. I liked it. Long on vegetables, the broth was real tomatoey in an Italian sense, not sweet tomato like you buy at the Super. I could have used more Oregano, but that could be my bias. I'll walk out again when it's colder and have that with a slice. I do like Napizza. My only issue is that the wine by the glass price seems out of proportion to the cost of a bowl of soup or a slice.

Best meal in Santee-open to all

I really like this board for best fish, best burrito, ethnic, etc. so T.I.A. I have to go to Santee on Friday, drop off a friend and pick them up later. I've never been there. Is ther anything you would call the best of San Diego, located in Santee or very close by? I'd like to support local, like ethnic especially Asian or South American., as well as a great burger, burro, steak, fish. Thanks in advance, again.

No spoon rule at Underbelly

Ha! Don't get me started on 7 bucks for 25 cl of beer!

I'm sure everyone knows they are expanding with a mizuwari bar upstairs. If there is some other "unique" rule there like Yamazaki must be sipped while standing on one leg, holding a renge (noodle spoon), I think we can say the place has jumped the shark :)

San Diego foodie sites other than Chowhound [moved from San Diego board]

I agree and I appreciate the update. I know I can search for other blogs, but I do respect many of the posters here. Similar to visiting a restaurant based on a good review, I was curious to see what else everyone followed.

Cheers,

San Diego foodie sites other than Chowhound [moved from San Diego board]

I appreciate that,. It's something I didn't know. At the risk of an issue, I'll pitch mmm yuso, and a great international site " the traveling hungryboy". Go on, banish me to a food site that no one can find....

No spoon rule at Underbelly

Does anyone know the origin of the” no spoons” rule at Underbelly? It’s not something that ever occurs at a ramen shop in any country I’ve visited, and certainly not in Japan. I’m used to trying the broth by itself by spoon, eating the ramen, and then maybe picking up the bowl if I want more broth. Is it anything other than a gimmick?

San Diego New Places Opening

For what it's worth, they are advertising in this months' Yu Yu for a ramen chef and staff. The ad is in Nihongo, rather than in English. I would really like a good ramen ya close to downtown.

Black Tie Dinner for 80, near Convention Center/Gaslamp District

Great suggestions above. I would add Mr. A's as it has some of the best views in the downtown San Diego area and is, in my opinion, excellent for the mix of service, food, and view factor.

Best Wings in San Diego

For downtown, I was really pleased (surprised) by The Red Zone. They make their own sauces-The mango jalapeño and the orange jalapeño are excellent- really spicy hot with a lot of complex flavor. Hand dipped wings as well. The Chef's name is Evan. I'm not sure if it's consistent if he is not there.

Where can I buy fish taco style smoked Marlin?

Thanks all. I ended up at the San Diego Farmers Market (Commercial Street and 22nd). There's one prepared fish stall, with no smoked Marlin, but I bought Civiche and Camerones Aguachile. Good value. They had several kilos of camerones being prepped on the center table. I assume they were thawed from frozen, but the taste was quite good.

Where can I buy fish taco style smoked Marlin?

Does anyone know of a local casual restaurant or market that sells Marlin for fish tacos in bulk, similar to how Porkyland sells Carnitas to go by the kilo? I'm looking for 2 kilos of smoked Marlin for a make your own fish taco night. Thanks!

Ramen in San Diego

I am another former 5 year resident of Japan (Tokyo), and the meal I miss most is Ramen. In San Diego, I think the authentic Japanese choices are limited to Santouka and Tajima. I just came back from a trip to LA and Costa Mesa/Fountain Valley and my new favorites are Shin Sen Gumi on Brookhurst for Tonkatsu Ramen and Ramen California (not for the purist, but really fresh, light chicken stock and fresh veggies). I really want to call "Ramen California" "Noodle Soup California", but it's quite good, whatever the name...

Gourmet India delivers. For downtown, I think it's the most authentic, and a great price point. We go there about every two weeks.

Sit down Mexican in Chula Vista

Looking for recs for a sit down (not to casual?) Mexican lunch in Chula Vista. While I love small taco shops, I want to take my folks out to lunch in someplace that they are more comfortable. Seafood preferred, margaritas would be nice. Thanks so much for your help.

Gaslamp San Diego ??

I lived in Tokyo for five years. For sashimi (not a sushi fan), I think Taka is quite fresh, and the quality is high. If you can get sat by Maru San (request at the time of your reservation), he can tell you what is good, fresh, and worth trying.
