Pittsburgh foodies: ISO pre show eats near Heinz Hall

Dinner was ok. It's not on my favorite list. I had the duck breast and forgot what the greenish/brown stuff was on my plate. I asked the server and he said mole sauce... it was confit lentils. Service was slow. Parking was a nightmare. I had no idea people going to the country concert across the bridge would park near Heinz Hall and crowd the restaurant. Noise level was bad. I did get in the lot across the street from Heinz for only $8/flat rate. I shoved my car somewhere probably where it wasn't supposed to be haha. Now I know Butcher and Rye is across the street, that's on my list to try. Hope you enjoyed the show. He was hilarious as always.

also you can eat at the bar at Meat and Potatoes but you have to get there the minute they open the doors. There's usually a line..

I haven't eaten there in a few years so I'm sure a lot has changed. I got Mac & Cheese as an entree and I was underwhelmed. It was a meal at the time and not a side.

I'm going to give it another shot and hopefully it will be better :)

I agree with yammers - meat & potatoes, grit & grace (both are excellent). I'm going to Six Penn before the show myself :)

Pittsburgh bakeries

There is Grandview Bakery on Shiloh in Mt. Washington. Someone told me they were owned by Prantl's (not sure of that). They are excellent!

Serious Question...Is Pittsburgh limited to Diners Drive-ins and Dives or are there a few good restaurants?

Jay - give it a try again. I have had numerous dishes and apps with no problems. I love the curries and Laksa noodles.

Stopping in Pittsburgh on my way to Ohio

The reason why these newer restaurants are successful are because they are pushing the culinary envelope. It's a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill restaurants and mediocre food. Don't let the descriptions throw you off. I've been to Salt many times and never had a bad meal.

It's just nice not to see the usual Pgh desserts on the menu (creme brulee, carrot cake and molten lava or chocolate/chocolate cake).

Monroeville has Green Mango (Thai) and they closed their other location, so they are not a chain :)

Pittsburgh Burgers

I've been to Burgatory. Burgers are great. Very loud and crowded however. I like BRGR better for the atmosphere and the burgers are great too! Get the fries!

I think 7/1 or 7/2.

I've never had a bad meal out at the Green Mango in Monroeville.

Green Mango (Regent Sq, Pgh) closing????

I read it in the paper. They said they wanted to focus more on their family.

The Green Mango in Monroeville is still open and I have had many good meals there.

St. Pats and Birthday in PGH - Suggestions

Hi - not sure if you have a vehicle or not. New Hyde Park Steakhouse is near the Hyatt on the North Shore. I enjoyed dining there.

Salt of the Earth in Garfield is another option.

As for party places, everywhere is jammed. Mullen's Bar on the North Shore, Piper's Pub on the South Side, Claddagh in the South Side Works.. all great places

Birthday dinner help--Pittsburgh

Jay - you should give it a try. Some of the combos might sound "odd" - but it works. It all tastes good together. I never had a bad meal there. I've been there twice and really want to go again.

I tried Pho Van in the Strip. It was ok. Nothing to write home about. Pho Kim on Route 88 is very good. You get the plate of basil, peppers, etc.

I can't compare it to SF Asian-type foods, but it is very good IMHO.
