St. Pats and Birthday in PGH - Suggestions
Hi - not sure if you have a vehicle or not. New Hyde Park Steakhouse is near the Hyatt on the North Shore. I enjoyed dining there.
Salt of the Earth in Garfield is another option.
As for party places, everywhere is jammed. Mullen's Bar on the North Shore, Piper's Pub on the South Side, Claddagh in the South Side Works.. all great places
Best Mussels Southside
Very few things I crave. Point/Park Bruges mussels in White wine/beurre blanc... I could eat it 3-4 days a week :)
Fresh Rice Noodles Anywhere in Pittsburgh??
I don't know if they carry them, but there is an Oriental Market on McKnight - right past the Red Lobster.

Birthday dinner help--Pittsburgh
Jay - you should give it a try. Some of the combos might sound "odd" - but it works. It all tastes good together. I never had a bad meal there. I've been there twice and really want to go again.
Looking for Pittsburgh restaurant recs for this weekend
It's not the cheapest, but there is Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse on the North Side. I've eaten there and really enjoyed it.

Pho in Pittsburgh? Need advice from people who actually know what they are talking about!
I tried Pho Van in the Strip. It was ok. Nothing to write home about. Pho Kim on Route 88 is very good. You get the plate of basil, peppers, etc.
I can't compare it to SF Asian-type foods, but it is very good IMHO.
Heintz Stadium Food
Robb - I'm sending a link. I was in Heinz Field for the U2 concert (never for a Steelers game :( ). Hopefully someone can give you a review. I had a hot dog and nachos, so I can't give you a review lol. I'm not a fan of Primanti's (sandwiches with fries and coleslaw on them) BUT it is a must try thing for out of towners.

Suggestions for the following in Pittsburgh next week
What about S&D Polish Deli in the Strip? I haven't been there, but my (part) Polish roots are telling me to go there :)

Mallorca Advice
First thing, get their Sangria - I love it. Their portions are huge. I would stick with the specials, it's usually a very long list including goat, boar, steaks the size of a large dinner plate, etc. My friend got prime rib and it looked like something from the Flintstones, haha. Their sides are kinda boring (vegs, homemade chips and salad). Some people complain it's "old and boring" but they have consistent food and service and offer a lot of choices beyond fish.
Pittsburgh's best Inflating Prices?
I went to Salt of the Earth on Friday. Two starters, two mains, 2 cocktails, 1 glass of wine, 2 desserts and 1 pressed coffee was $115.
Cut out the alcohol and desserts, bill would have been around $60.
Food was amazing as usual.
Pittsburgh's best Inflating Prices?
I went to Park Bruges twice. Two orders of mussels, we split the frites, 2 glasses of wine and a side (mac & cheese) and I think we spent about $50-$60.

Amici's Route 51 (outside Liberty Tunnels) closed some time ago. This was the old Tambellini's site. Now I see signs for Premier Family Buffet restaurant opening soon (urf)
Meat and Potatoes gastropub- PGH
Yammers - sounds like a great place to check out. I made the wrong choice at Six Penn too and thought the Mac N Cheese was awful.
I'm going to check out the outdoor jazz soon so maybe I'll take a stroll over afterwards :) thanks.
Finding Thai ingredients in the Pittsburgh area
My brand of curry paste is Maesri. It's made in Thailand. There is also an Oriental Market in N. Hills open that is smaller but somewhat comparable to Lotus Foods.

Just looking through Pittsburgh Magazine - if these are dupes, I apologize:
Meat and Potatoes - www.meatandpotatoespgh.com - Cafe Zao old space, chef is from Nine on Nine.
Root 174 - www.root174.com - former Legume chef.
BRiX - www.brixpgh.com - chefs/creators from Toast!

Jay - it's not the same. I bought curry at a "regular" store and it was very bland. I actually used a whole jar to make Thai soup.
These Asian curries are authentic and really good (really hot).
Finding Thai ingredients in the Pittsburgh area
Mine is in a can.. I'll have to check at home. It's wicked hot.. found that out when I made curry soup.. thought it wasn't hot enough.. added a big glob of curry only... about blew my head off hahaha

Lotus Foods has green curry paste. I bought all the colors (red, yellow, green) from there. I don't know about the others though :(

that's exciting! I hope it does go well. It's nice to see the "little guy" take on the land of chain restaurants with bad food :)
Pgh - Tamari - Can 2 get a seat on Sat w/out a reservation?
I would think so. I've been there "early" like 5 or 6 and was able to get a seat. If the weather cooperates, they have the patio area open. You can opt to sit at the bar and watch the kitchen too.
Must Eats in PGH
I dined at Salt. It's definitely not for everyone. People complained about the portion sizes -- really? Does everything have to be Olive Garden (slop) sizes? I had the Tilefish in Dashi broth.. the levels of flavors, food was wonderful. Powdered bacon was really cool in the cheese plate (dessert for us::)). The combinations aren't that obvious.. not like you'll find a pile of coffee grinds on a plate... the flavors are subtle.
