Falernum?
Velvet Falernum Legend
Sir James Taylor Mountjoy strode into the kitchen of Great Plantation House his Uncle had bequeathed to him; he was a proud young man. Sixty good acres of fine cane land in St Philip, Barbados in 1840 was indeed a wonderful legacy, and he was determined to make it a success.
One particularly attractive girl, perhaps 18, was busy on the stove with a large pot of boiling sugar whose sweetness filled the kitchen.
‘Smells delicious, what are you making?” was his response to the delightful aroma. “It really has a wonderful tropical fragrance. May I have a taste?”
“Well sah it make men rude!” answered the confident yet charming young girl.
“Oh I think I can handle that. How do you make it? What are the ingredients? It is delicious!”
“You want fuh learn um?”
Fa ler num! Good Lord what a fine name! Reminds me of the classic wine of ancient Campania beloved by the Gods, called Falernian. Young lady this is a wonder of the new world: I will name it after you …what is your name?
“ Velvet sah!”
Henceforth it will be called Taylor’s Velvet Falernum, a noble liquor fit for the Gods! I shall have some with my rum this evening. Bring me some Falernum this evening Velvet!”

Santa Barbara Bar of the past?
Years ago I was at a great bar in a hotel (The American Hotel?) on the main street of Santa Barbara. The ceiling was plastered with an artists caricatures of the patrons. Anyone know of the place?

Pizza Crawl - who's your winner?
I thought Casale was the best and had it all together. I would return to Joey's, Fratelli la Buffala, and Andiamo is not out of the question (I loved their Popeye Pizza). Racks had some decent pie. Big disappointments were Solsta and Pizza Volante. For the life of me I don't understand peoples attraction to Pizza Volante.

Casale South Beach
I'm sorry but I don't see the logic in these statements:
"This is a pizza place, but only about 1/4 of the menu is devoted to pizza. Not that that's bad, but if there's not as many choices as say Piola or Spris, then every pizza should be spot on due to the limited #."
&
"Friday night should've been exceptional since it was "Friends and Family" night!"

Mine too. It's the best crust for texture and taste I've had. Friday night was packed and the service was exceptional.

Miami's Most Iconic Restaurant?
I give a strong recommendation for Ortanique on the Mile. It is truly a Miami Icon. For 16 years Cindy Hutson's cuisine continues to win accolades and represents best the Floribbean movement of the early 90's. She is undoubtedly the heir to Norman Van Aken and the Mango Gang chef's who put south Florida on the culinary map. Her restaurant is the quintessential Miami dining experience.

Miami Pizza Showdown Part I - Recap
The pizza on the street in Roma, is called Pizza al Taglio (Italian for pizza by the slice or cut) is made in large rectangle trays. "Forno Campo de'Fiori" is famous bakery that makes this style along with "Pizzarium". As you can see the pie looks exactly like "Pizzeria Rustica's" and nothing like what PizzaVolante is doing.

Miami Pizza Showdown Part I - Recap
Here's a real boner from the Miami Herald.
In the SCENE IN THE TROPICS section they claim "The first of its kind in Miami, Pizza Volante is a Roman-style pizzeria and mozzarella parlor."
Really, the only pizzeria, I know in Miami, that can be classified as Roman is Pizzeria Rustica.

Miami Pizza Showdown Part I - Recap
Joey's satisfied across the board great tastes.
Pizzavolante underwhelmed, taste got lost in the minimalism.
Andiamo surprised. Had the pizza of the night (The Popeye).

Caviar Kaspia
"South Beach's old Webster building will reemerge June 1 as a 20,000-square-foot, outrageously chic emporium. Its French founders, Laure Hériard Dubreuil, Frederic Dechnik and Milan Vukmirovic, have concocted a three-floor shopping experience with men's and women's clothing from the most elite brands, fine jewelry, vintage watches, art offerings, a lounge area, rooftop space and the first U.S. outpost of the famously hip Paris eatery Caviar Kaspia."

I agree. The pizza at Rustica, Spris even Piola is pretty good.
The new Sardinia Pizzeria is looking like it will be a gorgeous fun place and I'm sure the pizza isn't going to be bad.

8 oz Burger Bar lands on South Beach
I really don't eat hamburgers but because Govind Armstrong was opening a burger bar, like a lot of people, I was interested. The layout and look of the place is very comfortable, the service couldn't have been better and where else can you hear Beatle music in South Beach. I've been there twice now and am disappointed with the general lack of flavor. I was hoping that the house blend of sirloin, tri-tip, short rib and chuck would impress. I also sampled the wild boar, and lamb and found them lacking. The short rib grilled cheese was dry. The miniscule fillet of fish had some flavor because I got it fried. The fried olives didn't live up to the memory of when I had them at the bar of Table 8. I did enjoy the beet salad and the beer is great. I would still meet friends there for a drink but if I ever wanted a hamburger again I would go to 5 Guys, I think their fries are also better. They are opening up on the beach in the old Dogma space.
