What Brooklyn dinner experience (tomorrow night!) will persuade my wife to move there with me?

Fried Axolotl, maybe? I just bought $72 worth of Moxie in Allentown, Pa on Sunday! Come join Melvin Coznowski and me...we'll have some crackers...to slip a rozer the dropsy in snide...with it.

I assume Peter, you can decypher what was just said...and congratulations!

New Brunswick Restaurant Week

Be sure to have a Fat Ronaldo or a Fat Darrell at the R. U. Hungry Grease Trucks, and a CaliCheeseburger at White Rose System.

Unpretentious, delicious, guaranteed to spike your glucose and you'll have change of a $10 bill. Better than most sit down restaurants.

Try:

DiFara's
Skinflint's for Hamburgers (Fifth Ave at 79th St, Bay Ridge)
Nathan's for hot dogs and fries (Don't forget their Chow Mein on a bun and frog legs)
Middle East on Atlantic Avenue and around Church Ave (McDonald Ave and Coney Isl Ave)
Forget Juniors...their cheesecakes are pure sugar now)

If your wife doesn't want to move to Brooklyn with these here, keep her as a friend and get a chowhound to accompany you to the best eats.

Any Good Indian Buffets by a trolley line?

I'm a trolley nut who will ride SEPTA trolleys on Saturday to get pictures of them in the snow. Any good recommendations for Indian Buffets near the 10, 13, 15, 34 or 36 lines? Or Center City on Saturday?

It'll be cheesesteaks if this idea craps out. Good, but fattening.

Announcement: New Board Breakdown for Chowhound

Mazel Tov...this is wonderful news. It should only have happened earlier. I'm glad NJ is getting its own recognition.

But couldn't you have given DiFara's Pizza in Brooklyn its own board?

Trader Joe's in West Windsor (Princeton, between friends) IS NOW OPEN!

I was there earlier today, opening day.

I don't thinks it's going to last. It was too crowded. Just think what it'll be like when it gets popular! No one will go there.

(Seriously...although it had the lines and crowds of opening day...it was clean, I liked the variety of their homebrands...and they sell fruit by the each...not by the five or by the pound. ).
Nicely lit, not like the ones in Westfield or Commack.

Give it a few weeks for the teething pains and novelty aspect to die down. It'll be nice competion against Wegmans, Shopright and Whole Foods.

Pizza-deprived in Canada seeking best pizza in Brooklyn . . . Help!

If you want to check out the Pakistani and Bengali area that Kensington is (not the one south of Queen Street), then you'll also be in the neighborhood of Corner Pizza (East 3rd Street on Church Avenue). They still make a great slice for only half the price of DiFara. Used to live a block away and it's one of the reasons my cholesterol and blood pressure are what they are today.

Their meetballs...AH Machayah!

Hey...you still can get pretty good pizza for 99 cents at 9th Ave at 41st St in Manhattan...for the extra 4 samolians...how much better do you need?

A place not on the subway line: Where should I go if I have a car for one day?

Try City Island in the north of the Bronx...many good places. Sorry...not current with any places on Staten Island. Check the other entries for Sheepshead Bay/Kings Plaza...some good places around there.

The rest is typically subway-accessible.

Water bagels?

Dear former neighbor (having grown up in the 50s and 60s on E. 13 between K & L)...they are hard to find, but a good replacement is the bagel store in Quakerbridge, NJ on Flock, just off Quakerbridge Road. I used to get them also when I lived in Canarsie on Flatlands at 79th (Bell Bagels), but alas, time marches on. These in Jersey were very close to what I remember.

Corned Beef Hash

Last time I was at Junior's on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, it was still the homemade (strips of beef, not oakmeal consistancy like from a can) that was about the only still-good thing there, since their cheesecakes turned to pure sugar.

Any recent CBH lovers try it there?

What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?

St. Johns Bread (Bukshoo, in Yiddish). My rabbi gave me some to try in Hebrew School. I wanted to convert then and there!

Hot or Cold tap water for boiling Pasta??

Another bubbeh meisseh. Cut off the ends of a roast when putting it into the pan for baking! My Grandmother always did this.

She, of course, didn't realize that it was because the roast was too long for the pan to begin with.

So who are you going to believe, old tales or scientific fact. Basic thermodynamics, like we all learned in high school (at least if you were lucky enough to go to Brooklyn Tech)...it takes less energy to excite the molecules of water to raise already hot water to 100 degrees centigrade (212 degrees to normal people...ie, boiling) than the sluggishly moving molecules of cold water.

Basic sech'l (and not a bubbeh meiser!)

How else would you boil the luxshin in koogl?

Hot or Cold tap water for boiling Pasta??

Have you ever returned a plate of spaghetti in a restaurant to the kitchen complaining they used the wrong flavor of water?

Gad...it's all in the mind, you know.

Pizza restaurant at a diner-tips at the counter?

There's a restaurant in East Brunswick, NJ (Sandy's) that has a regular booth area for diners and a counter area. They sell Pizza (pretty good, I might add) up front at the entrance but no separate area for sitting for pizza eaters, requiring the pizza eater to take a booth or sit at the counter. So if you've ordered, paid for and taken your pizza to the rest of the restaurant, this makes me feel very uneasy as this is typically where people who have restaurant meals would be, all around me, and I feel awkward about the tipping...I paid for a slice of pizza, not waitress service. I don't want to tip even if I'm just at the counter.

Very uncomfortable.

Thoughts?

Folger's Instant Decaf-comments?

Anyone have a critique about the green-label version of the Folger's Instant Decaf? I usually had the red-labeled regular crystals but tried the green decaf about a year ago. Didn't care for it the one time I tried it. I bolstered up my courage, tried again, and was so disenchanted with it that I through the furshluggina jar out.

Any other people like or dislike it?

Incredible, sudden craving for great corned beef hash

Last time I was at Juniors on Flatbush at DeKalb (Brooklyn), their CBH was the only decent thing left...their cheesecakes are mamafufu.

A cold winter favorite...instant Iced Coffee

Now that it's time to get cozy under the blankets, put another log on the gas fire, time for a nice winter treat...instant Iced Coffee. My way.

Just take some Folgers Crystals (about a rounded soup spoon, not heaping), stir it (not shaken) into 18 oz of water in a 20 oz plastic glass. Add two ice cubes and imagine you're on a tropical island. Nescafe Clasico also does the trick. (Forget Folgers green-jarred decaf. Pure poison).

Of course, if it's after 8PM, use Sanka instead.

Any other users of the gorgous brown powder crystals?

(And why is it so hard to find Sanka nowadays...I have to get it at Wegmans? The usual Pathmark, Stop and Shop and Shoprite don't carry it!)

Like Moxie, a wicked good drink to cure what ails you.

Main Street, South River, NJ

I work in South River and hit the SUN SUN Chinese take-out 2 or 3 times a week (right at the foot of Ferry/Whitehead) at Main Street. Really good value and they make a good-sized lunch special (with white or fried rice) and a good hot-sour soup. I like their making specials for me that aren't on the menu, like beef curry.

Nice people.

Chicken Fat, of course. (My father was the one who got the jars of Postum). Also can't get No Cal cola or saccarine, probably for the better.
