Williamsburg, VA Area

Reservations at Waypoint on weekends are a must. The place has been packed which is great for the middle of January in Williamsburg. I haven't tried it but reports are good.

Restaurant in the city for birthday celebration for 21 year old?

Many thanks, cook262! I made a reservation at Oesteria. I have always wanted to try it and she loves Italian. I'm glad to know that it has a fun vibe.

Restaurant in the city for birthday celebration for 21 year old?

I need some recommendations for a birthday celebration. We'll be staying in the Rittenhouse Square area but willing to go to other neighborhoods. She'll be turning 21 in the days following the dinner so drinking is not a priority for this evening. I'll leave that celebration to her college friends. There will be two young adults and two parents in the party. She's a foodie but I think it would be fun to go to a place with good food and a lively atmosphere and one we haven't tried. Years ago we went to Tangerine and enjoyed it. I'd love to find a place along those lines. We've been to Distrito, Alma de Cuba, Table31, Lacroix, Fork, James. Any ideas?

Where to buy sushi-grade tuna in Hampton Roads Area

They sometimes have it at Fresh Market. Check the NN or Wmsbg stores.

Where to Eat in Williamsburg VA

I think Le Yaca offers a very nice lunch that isn't very expensive.

Restaurant Recommendation in Williamsburg

Another vote for Fat Canary. Also Le Yaca near Busch Gardens for french. Blue Talon has a nice bistro menu.

Italian bakery near Yorktown, VA?

Florimontes at the far end of the Crossing Shopping Center at 199 and 5 in Williamsburg has a few things.

Best cheese steak in the Triangle

I gotta tell you that if those peppers are bell peppers, then Dain's cheesesteaks aren't even close to being authentic. Only Italian peppers, sweet or hot, are allowed anywhere near a Philly cheesesteak.

Colonial Williamsburg

There are a lot of choices within walking distance. There are, of course, the colonial restaurants if you want something different. For a little bit more upscale dining you could go to the Trellis or Blue Tavern. More casual fare can be found in the next block over at Aromas coffee house and Retros. Retros has great fries, burgers, etc.

Thanksgiving Dinner in Williamsburg

Also look at Kingsmill www.kingsmillresort.com. They always have something planned for holidays and the setting is gorgeous. If you eat early enough, you can take a walk down by the river afterwards. Even if the meal is in one of their ballrooms, it will be special. Their banquet food is wonderful.

I-95 In Philly to 1 S in DE to 13S through MD to Norfolk

If the timing works out better that you eat closer to the CBBT then Stingrays in the Exxon just a few miles before the CBBT has good seafood. I don't think they have hardshell crabs though.

Fabulous lunch in Charleston yesterday

Thank you! I am also headed down there Friday with my daughter. This sounds like a place both of us would enjoy.

St. Croix restaurant report

During a recent trip to St. Croix we had the opportunity to try some great restaurants and some not so great ones.

Savant - We ate outside in the lovely courtyard setting serenaded by the frog or bug in the greenery that was very entertaining. I would recommend that you do not sit on one of the concrete benches at the side. They are very uncomfortable. The menu was varied and imaginative. Some of the dishes were marked as spicy. We found that most of the food, marked or not, was overspiced. It was probably the worst meal we had during the trip. Not horrid, but certainly not great.

Bacchus - A big improvement over Savant. The best service we had. Son said his steak at Bacchus was better than the one at Kendricks. I started with a fantastic, tangy, potato, sausage salad with a mustard dressing and then had the portobello, vegetable entree. Yummy.

Kendricks - My favorite. The wait staff was a little young and inexperienced but the manager more than made up for it. She was great. My salmon was my favorite meal of the week and is in my lifetime top 5. My husband thought his tuna was wonderful. The outdoor setting at Kendricks was as lovely as Savant's but more comfortable.

The Terrace at the Buccaneer - We ate two dinners here at our lodging site. They were very good. Not as memorable as Kendricks or Bacchus but high quality and the view can't be beat.

Mermaid at the Buccaneer - Right off the beach. Salads were good. Do not order the mint tea. It's like drinking mouthwash.

Lunches at:
Off the Wall - What a setting!!! Fabulous beach location and view. Warning, though. They put red pepper flakes in the hamburgers.

Duggans - Another nice setting on the beach. Good salads.

We can't wait to go back.

Where can I get Schweppes Bitter Lemon?

I agree with macdaire. We have always used it as a mixer, usually with gin or vodka so I can't imagine substituting lemon soda. We used to bring down cases of Schweppes to Virginia from NJ and found it gradually harder and harder to get. I'll have to try those links. Thanks.

The Homestead

We have found that Sam Sneads has better food than the dining room. It is more casual and you miss the whole grand dining room experience but it is worth going across the street for a dinner or two.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

Licensed veterinary technician specializing in anesthesia. It has nothing to do with food.

BBQ around Hampton, VA

If you're driving by Williamsburg on I64 on your way to Hampton, you should stop at Pierces' on Rochambeau.

Current recommendations for Williamsburg, VA

I would not call Fat Canary "family friendly".
Pierces is a very casual and excellant but out of the way BBQ joint.
Casa Maya on Richmond Rd has good Mexican.
If you walk around New Town you'll find a lot of good places ranging from casual burger places to more upscale dining.

Philadelphia to Duck, NC Dinner Stop

It sounds like you are coming all the way down the eastern shore and crossing the CBBT. Just before the tunnel is Stingrays in an Exxon on your left. Great seafood and great people watching. We love the broiled flounder (with two sides) but there are a lot of good fried and broiled choices plus nonseafood items. For the other end of the spectrum I have heard good things about the restaurant at the Bay Creek golf course.

Recommendations for St. MarysCity & Williamsburg

In Williamsburg -
Emerald on Rt 60 towards Busch Gardens has good Asian with a Thai slant.
Also, Chez Trinh on Monticello behind Books a Million has very good Asian with a Korean slant. When the Asian journalists come for the LPGA tourny they return every year to Chez T.

I like the delis. We are usually at Paul's after every home basketball game. I don't know if I would go now. They will probably be very quiet during the summer.

For a good, casual breakfast, lunch or dinner you can also check out Aromas, a coffee cafe on Prince George St. It is a big student hangout.

Dinner at Bistrot Lepic, Breakfast at Luna Grill

Thanks Steve. Yes, when I described it to my 16 yo daughter she told me that it is called a Floating Island. She watches way too much Food Network! I eat gluten free so it was a perfect dessert for me.

Dinner at Bistrot Lepic, Breakfast at Luna Grill

We escaped to DC for a quick overnight. I didn't feel like anything over-the-top fancy. A French bistro sounded perfect. Bistrot Lepic is on Wisconsin near R in Georgetown. We took a cab from Dupont Circle but there seemed to be plenty of on-street parking available near the restaurant. The bistro is cozy with ok decor. The staff was very friendly and French. I started with a lemon risotto with grilled shrimp. It was good but the presentation in a deep, small bowl made it difficult to cut and eat the single, large shrimp. Husband's lobster bisque was ok but not the best he'd had. My rockfish special was good and then excellant when I figured out that I needed to swirl every bite in the yummy reduced red pepper sauce at the bottom. My husband claimed his lamb was fantastic. My dessert was so wonderful I don't even remember what my husband was eating across from me. Mine was a chunk of moist meringue in creme anglaise. The meringue was topped with almonds and drizzled syrup.

Breakfast the next morning at Luna Grill on Connecticut was good, nothing exceptional. We ate on the back outdoors patio. Its a pleasant, simple place to eat breakfast before heading to the musuems or shops.

Williamsburg Inn

You should have asked us first. The Inn has never been a favorite of mine. Even when the food is good the service is so incredibly snobby. I don't care for the other tourist fave, the Trellis, either. For all 3 qualities: service, food, atmosphere I recommend Whitehall on Jamestown Rd or Le Yaca near Busch. Fat Canary and Blue Talon have good food but less elegant atmosphere.

Newport News, Williamsburg, Jamestowne?

Jamestown is Williamsburg so you can knock that off your list. Casual, good restaurants in Williamsburg are:
Asian: Emerald (thai, near Busch Gardens), Chez Trinh (near Staples on Monticello)
Italian: Sals by Victor (across from Staples on Richmond Rd), Maurizios (next door to Emerald) Giuseppes (near the outlets)
Mexican: Casa Maya (in hotel row on Richmond Rd), South of the Border (on Bypass)
Seafood: Whaling Co. (near Busch Gardens), Berrets (in Merchants Square)
Nice: Fat Canary, Blue Talon (bistro in Merchants Square), Whitehall (continental on Jamestown Rd near 199), Cities Grill (on Rt 5), Le Yaca (French near Busch Gardens)

Williamsburg, VA - Report on 3 Dinners

Blue Talon is one of my favs. hopkid - try a glass of the house red when you go. A bargain.

Boston Hound Needs Recs for Williamsburg, Charlottesville & Alexandria VA

Also in Williamsburg, Chickahominy house on Jamestown for southern breakfasts and lunches. Biscuits, country ham, Brunswick stew. Go to the Peanut Shop off Merchants Square for ham, peanuts, peanut soup.

Boston Hound Needs Recs for Williamsburg, Charlottesville & Alexandria VA

In Williamsburg:
You need to try to get out to Pierces BBQ on Rochambeau. Side of the highway type of place but great BBQ with the fixings.
I also like Fat Canary but you'll need to make a reserv. Blue Talon in Merchants Square is good but more French Bistro. Centre St. Grill in New Town has good food and seems to lean towards some southern.

Restaurants in University City

Thanks everyone. After looking at menus on web sites, I decided that Penne would best suit his tastes. I have to agree with Saturninus. It was just ok. Nice decor and atmosphere, lovely hostess, good (not great food), fair service. At a restaurant of this caliber I would expect the waitress to list the specials without being asked, have the kitchen split a salad on two plates when it is shared, and refill coffee.
Because of the weather, we ate breakfast closer to our hotel. I would love to try RX sometime.

I will refer to your other great suggestions when we return to this fantastic town. Thanks again.

Restaurants in University City

Darn! My post's title was dumped. Here's the post:
I'm taking my son to Drexel's accepted student day in Philly next weekend. Since he'll probably end up there next year I'd like to introduce him to the neighborhood. I lived there 20 years ago so I'm not completely clueless but I am aware that some things have changed. I'd like to take him to one casual student hangout-type place one night and something a little nicer another. He's not a big fan of asian food but anything else would be ok. BTW his favorite restaurant in Philly is Tangerine.
Also, any breakfast places in the neighborhood? Thanks.
