Interesting Ice Cream Flavors?

Hey all!

I've just been getting a craving for some interesting ice cream lately... probably because im so sick of the peanut butter cup ice cream my family is used to...

I've usually failed at ice cream making at home because ive been too impatient. I've under-frozen the ice cream maker base, under-chilled the creme anglaise, and under-churned the ice cream. But this is going to be different... you'll see....

I want to really make all of this new-found patience worth it, though. Instead of normal vanilla (not that I have anything against a good vanilla!), I want to try something fun and new. Maybe some dried fruit or reduced balsamic, im not sure.

Basically, im asking y'all for some tried and true ice cream/gelato recipes or even an amazing go-to ice cream base that I could use to test other flavors. Thanks guys!

Castup and Mustard in Manchester

yep, thanks goodbyeohio.

Castup and Mustard in Manchester

Hey all!

I'm not sure if anyone's brought this up yet, but I just stopped at Catsup and Mustard with my friend the other night, and I was really impressed!

I ordered the barbecue-style burger (fried onions, bbq sauce, bacon, cheddar) and I LOVED it. The best part was that the burger itself is loosely packed so its VERY tender and juicy. I felt as though all of the toppings complimented the meat and it was just plain good.

You get vinegar slaw, a sweet gherkin, and another pickle on the side with every burger and I liked all 3. The slaw was tangy enough to cut through the richness of the beef, but not too acidic or sweet like most slaws.

Service and price were both pretty good, my meal was under 8 dollars and I felt pretty full afterwards! Plus, it looked like they have live music sometimes.

I'd give it a try :)

End of School Party... recipes?

haha well I know THAT :)

Like I'm buying, dried, canned, and fresh peppers, onions, cilantro, garlic, lime juice, and tomatoes for my salsa, but chopping all of that and throwing it together just takes a couple minutes so I think it's pretty simple to put together. I'm just trying to think of a few snacks that won't require me to be sitting in the kitchen while my friends are out by the pool, ya dig?

Thanks!

End of School Party... recipes?

Hey all!

So me and my friend are having this last-minute end of school party tomorrow afternoon and I was just looking for some quick-and-easy recipes that I could throw together very quickly :). I'll make the standard homemade tortilla chips, guac, and salsa, but what else could be easily thrown together and still impress my friends? Theres going to be about 12 people, and it'll be by a pool with grill access. Normally I'd do this in advance but I wanna spend time with my friends!!

Thanks everyone,

What's Up With Olive Oil on my veggies?

MakingSense: I'm pretty sure soupkitten was trying to imply that the technique of saute'ing the blanced beans was traditional, not that olive oil is indefinitely traced back to the cooking of native americans...

I'm 17 so I dont know everything about restaurants but I've been working in kitchens for a few years, and when I'm on expo and there's 20 orders on deck, I don't usually have the time to ponder the exact reason why one person asked for no butter on their green beans.

im definitely gonna check out pho 501 ASAP with my friends, sounds pretty great

as for char koon... I've always been kinda turned off by their take-out. It seems like they throw whatever near-rotting leftover veggies into the lo mein and the General Tsou's sauce is like pie-filling... in my opinion :-P

This is great guys! keep em comin' :-P

Hey all!

I'm new to CHOW so ill just say a bit about myself. I'm 17, I love to cook (and hope to get into culinary school), and me and my friends are looking for fun and interesting places to eat!

We're all pretty broke so recently we've resorted to eating at McDonalds... It gets us full but it's just not what I'm looking for! We've got a few spots we like to eat on semi-special occasions (times when we have money) like Auggie And Ray's in East Hartford, Little Mark's in Vernon, but I'm curious about new spots!

I'd love to hear about some real authentic ethnic joints that are semi-close and semi-cheap, but any cool place would be great!!

Thanks guys,
Teej

Sauce in Glastonbury

I've been with my family and I really liked it!

I thought the menu was mentally refreshing compared to the zillions of pizza places and pasta + red sauce places in glastonbury. I loved the white anchovy chicchetti(sp?) and braised beef short ribs!
