Best sushi in Western Mass?

I know this has been discussed before, but I'd like some recent opinions.

There are so many sushi options in Northampton but I just haven't been that impressed with any of them. We've been to Osaka most often but have also tried all the others at least once. Are any places worth another shot? Sushi is so pricy and I hate feeling like I wasted my money, plus a trip to Brooklyn a few months ago reminded me of just how good sushi can be.

I read a few good reviews of KS Restaurant in Westfield. Has anyone been there?

Pho Vietnam opening tonight in Northampton!

We got takeout tonight and also had a really long wait, about 45 minutes. The fresh rolls were good but the vermicelli bowls were just average; I felt like they should have provided some type of sauce on the side since the noodles/veggies weren't dressed at all. Anyway, I'm sure we'll go back since it's the only Vietnamese option in town. They've just been open three days now so I assume the service will improve. The place was packed at 6PM with every table taken!

clambakes in RI

we're pricing clambakes for our wedding in Newport and are considering Compton Clambakes and B&M (in Pawtucket). they're comparably priced so we're hoping some personal testimonials might sway us in one direction or the other.

i saw a couple of older posts about Compton but didn't see a lot of details. has anyone used one of these companies for an event, or attended an event where they catered? any info would be great.

Galway House or Jeanie Johnston?

you should try the Galway House for sure! it is a very unique experience as it's nothing like you'd expect just from looking at the exterior. there is a very extensive menu, decent food & huge portions. the lighting is horribly bright and it smells very smoky, but it's still worth checking out. caveat: i haven't been there in a couple of years, so it's possible the food quality has changed since then, and hopefully the smell has improved as well!

My first Bahn Mi..

I just asked Mei Sum what they use for their spread, as I was trying to recreate the sandwich at home and failed miserably. They said they make it there using egg yolks and oil. Homemade mayo, basically.

Garden at the Cellar: where's the love?

interesting...typically we've gone when it's just two of us, and haven't had a problem sitting at the bar. but maybe we've just been lucky!

Garden at the Cellar: where's the love?

okay, so i have posted about this place before on this board, but we recently made another trip to Garden at the Cellar in Cambridge, and once i was completely blown away. honestly, i don't think any place in the area compares in terms of value combined with quality of food, especially now that the Biltmore has gone under new ownership. i love the fact that you can eat well here (really well, in my opinion) for under $50 for two. there are many items on the menu that are very reasonably priced and it's easy to combine a few small plates for a substantive meal. i especially love what they do with vegetables--the veggie sides sampling is always really unique and delicious and always inspires me to do more with vegetables in my own cooking. i'm not vegetarian, but it seems like a really good dining option for those who are.

i'm surprised that the Garden doesn't get more play on this board (or maybe I've just missed the posts). have others had lackluster experiences there?

lime leaves recently?

has anyone come across lime leaves lately? i have been looking in all the usual places (super 88, the other markets in chinatown, whole foods) and they are nowhere to be found. perhaps there's a run on lime leaves lately? i want to make some curry so i'd appreciate any leads...

Portland recommendation needed--group meal

I'm searching for a restaurant that can easily accomodate a group of fifteen. I was all set to make a reservation at Clyde Common, but they 1) don't take large group reservations on weekends and 2) serve large groups family style--not what we're looking for.

This is a group of fairly adventurous eaters, and we'll be staying at the Hilton downtown. A restaurant nearby would be nice but not essential. Most important is amazing food and great service (it's a business dinner).

Any good recommendations for a place that's similar in price and quality to Clyde Common? Thanks in advance!

Romano's Mexican Roslindale

Good Feta in JP?

if you can hop on one of the buses that go down washington street to roslindale, you can find plenty of feta at the Roslindale Fish Market, right in the center of Roslindale Village.

ROSLINDALE RECS?

Delfino's is definitely the fanciest place in Roslindale in terms of atmosphere and quality. I like it a lot but it feels like a special occasion place to me. Sophia's and Geoffrey's both have great atmosphere with decent, moderately priced food. Sophia's shares a courtyard with a few other places and it's a lively scene in warm weather. Village Sushi is good for Japanese and I really like Bangkok Cafe, the Thai place in the square. Blue Star is cheap diner food--not bad but nothing special (in my opinion!). Oh, one other note about Roslindale--there are a lot of small ethnic markets that are worth checking out.

Anyone Been to Derna's in Roslindale?

i love the bahn mi at le's sandwich shop in chinatown (just off beach street). i always get tofu and it's better there than anywhere else.

Arnold Arboretum -- where to eat?

The Dogwood is the best option but it may not be open when you need to go. Java Jo's coffee shop is on the same block as the Dogwood. Nothing amazing but they have decent coffee and a good selection of sandwiches.

Downtown Bakery

it opened a few months ago. it's super busy at lunch but pretty calm the rest of the day.

JP Recommendations

i'd also throw in a suggestion for the Brendan Behan pub, which is really close to the brewery. they don't serve food (though you can bring food in from elsewhere) but the atmosphere is awesome. you could always have a pint there and then move on to doyle's or james gate.

Garden in the cellar-Cambridge

i love this place and wrote an earlier post about it in the fall. i'm always surprised not to see more posts about it on this board. the food is adventurous and a really good value to boot--a hard combo to find in cambridge.

Harvest tonight

We're going to Harvest tonight to celebrate the BF's birthday. I've never been before--any suggestions?

Also, is there a place in Harvard Square for an especially good pre-meal cocktail? The last time I spent significant amounts of time in Harvard Square was before I was of legal drinking age--and that's been quite a few years! If there's nothing special we'll probably skip it but I thought I'd check.

good to know. i would sit at the bar if it was just two of us, but it will now be four of us so we'll probably need to sit at a table in the cafe.
