Times Square/Theatre District Suggestions on the cheap side
Wall the extra couple blocks to Hell's Kitchen, 9th Av. The best way to get there is through Restaurant Row 46th St. ... this way you can see how ridiculously priced everything is there and when you get to 9th Av you have an explosion of restaurants at 1/3 the price. Just look sift the boards for Hell's Kitchen restaurants. All within easy walkking distance to the shows.
Where can I eat in Grandma's kitchen?
I'm looking for something off the beaten path tonite for dinner. I'm looking for something in someone's home or kitchen that serves something that is so out of this world. Where is it?
Taste of Chinatown this weekend?
THAT SUCKS SO BAD!!! I was so looking forward to it. And now in December??? That's messed up.
Taste of Chinatown this weekend?
This sucks ... I was looking forward to this weekend. Do we have any inside connections on this board to confirm? This is the best taste in NYC and they are not taking it serious enough!!! :)
Taste of Chinatown? When????
Thank you! See you there ... I'll be the non asian fella standing in every line througout the day.
Taste of Chinatown? When????
Does anyone know when the taste of Chinatown is going to be held this year? Don't know why they have not posted dates yet ... but hoping an insider will hook us up!

Where do you buy your soft shells?
I get mine from the fish markets between baxter and mott on canal. Don't underestimate the low prices at those markets, the fish there is caught in the same place where you buy it for 3-5 times the price.
Long Weekend in Manhattan
Yeah, you're really going to have to narrow your details down quite a bit. There are expensive holes in the wall ... some worth the price, some not so much. For instance one of my favs in the city is Elias' Corner (Greek Seafood) in Astoria. Total hole in the wall, no menu. But will set you back $100 for dinner for 2 with drinks with ease.
STL: NY/East Coast style pizza
Zackly. Well luckly I'm back in NYC now and have a Ray's on my block and about 20 pizza shops within short walking distance, so luckily I don't have to live with that anymore. Now if we could just get some real BBQ in Manhattan life would be good. However last word about that Imo's pizza ... it's the only pizza where I can eat an entire large pizza all on my own. That pizza is by far the worst I ever had on the planet. Even worst then Ellio's ... while still frozen. Worst then a piece of toast with cheap no name ketchup.
STL: NY/East Coast style pizza
Got it ... but I still don't get it. Not only do the pizza's taste horrible, but some of STL's so called Italian restaurants use this cheese on their dishes too. STL has a lot going for it ... I lived there for about 5 years. The STL Zoo is the best in the nation and the entire Forest Park rivals any other in the nation, including Central Park. BBQ is great and so is the asian food ... but that provel cheese really eeeked me.
STL: NY/East Coast style pizza
I always wondered why they called provel "provel" and not plain ol American cheese. STL'ians put it on everything and it's horrbile. I never understood it.
NYC style pizza in STL is hard to find. Talyana's is New York style, but at it's worst.
STL Best BBQ in USA, Smokin Al's
Well I've been to just about every famous BBQ stand, joint, place, restaurant from Chicago to Memphis to Carolinas to Texas.
But of all the places I've been too, nothing takes it home like the biggest little secret in St. Louis and that would be Smokin Al's. The place is just phenominal, the ribs and shoulder are out of this world and the sauce is the best I've ever had by miles.
Not only is the BBQ the best in the country, the sides are amazing as well. The pork and beans are a meal in their own. Prices ... can't even be matched.
So if you haven't been to Smokin Al's try it and prove me wrong ... I dare ya. I give the place a 10 across all boards.
See you next time I'm in STL!!!!
FiDi street carts
Alan's Falafel at least 1 or 2 times a week. Best $3 you can spend. When I feel really crazy I go for the plate which fills me lunch and dinner.
Another great cart is in front of my office at 44 Wall. Great cheesesteaks and platters.
As far as weekend carts ... sometimes they are there but most are gone.
Todai Restaurant (6 E. 32nd Street)
Been to Todai a bunch ... not bad. However I like sushi park better, if you like sushi more than american versions of japanese food like Todai has. Sushi park focuses on the their sushi first and last. Great sushimi collection for sure.

Taste(s) of Manhattan - The List
Well I went to the Hell's kitchen "International" food fest and sorry to say, it was awful, although not a complete washout. However doesn't come close to the Feast of San Genarro. Same street fair and yet another misadvertised theme.
All those retaurants along 9th ave and only a handful participate. Of the ones that do participate, they are just serving regular menu items at sometimes inflated "show" prices. Although I did bring home about 25 travel size toothpastes thanks to Auqafresh, that was the best part.
Of all the so called common food fests I've been to this city, only Taste of Chinatown has figured it out so far. Each vendor is REQUIRED to offer only $1 - 2 tastings so you can REALLLLLY taste what each participant has to offer. These vendors need to learn how to BRAND their products by offering reasonable prices instead of making the events a cash cow for the day. DUMB.
Looks like I will be going to taste of UWS next weekend, at least the price is reasonable. I see a lot of tastes in the $200+ range but there is only so much I can fit at $100 let alone $200.
Taste(s) of Manhattan - The List
Great thanks everyone! This is exactly what I was looking for!!! Guess I'll start having to exercise a lot more to keep up with these events. Thanks so much, see you in HK this weekend!!!!
Cheesesteaks
"It's steak, cheese, and bread?"
Not by a longshot. You'd think it would really be that way in this day and age, but I have yet to have a better cheesesteak than Tony Lukes in Philly. Biased from Philly ... maybe, but I know the difference between Brooklyn/Brox best Pizza and Philly's best Pizza, Brooklyn/Bronx takes Philly's best by a mile and a half.
Cheesesteaks
It's the Times Square of the Philly Cheesesteak. Ironically the streets are laid out the same at TS too. All roads in South Philly lead to it ... N, E, S, W and diagnol. Home of Pats and Genos steaks. Me ... I'll take Pat's any day of the week.
Taste(s) of Manhattan - The List
Hi everyone. I'm new to these boards, however old to exploring good food. I'm hoping to compile a list of various "tastes" of Manhattan along with their dates and ratings. The only one I've been to is the Taste of Chinatown and it's rather amazing. I would also consider something like the Feast of San Genarro a "taste" of Little Italy seeing that a bunch of the restaurants particpate. So really I'm trying to put together a list of regional "tastes" where the local restaurants particpate and offer small dishes instead of full meals. I think you get the point.
I'll start off with the most obvious. Not sure if I can edit posts later and add to top of the list yet. Mods can chime in if so.
Taste of Chinatown / Chinatown / Fall of 2008 (can't find date) Rate it a 9/10.
Feast of San Gennaro / Little Italy / September 11, 2008 / Rate it 8/10.
Real midwest bbq? Memphis/St. Louis style
Looking for REAL bbq, pulled pork and ribs St. Louis or Memphis style. If you've never been to some of the top places in these 2 cities, you probably don't understand what I mean. I don't mean to come across as condesending, it's just I've had suggestions on good BBQ from people who thought it was good and well ... you know.
It's a plus if you've been to Smokin Al's in St. Louis or Cozy Corner/Central in Memphis. If you've been to these places and think they are great BBQ, then you know good BBQ. Sorry to be so picky .. it's just sometimes I wish I lived back in St. Louis just for their BBQ.
Cheesesteaks
Some of the carts are rather impressive and I'm from Philly and have spent many of night at 9th and Passyunk.
There is a cart right outside my office at 44 Wall St. that could easily rival the steaks in Philly.
