Steakhouse with the family

Having eaten at the Tulip, Keg and Canyon Creek, I would pick the Keg any day. Tulip used to be good value before they changed the menu. Their small sirloin was an amazing deal. The last time I ate a steak there it wasnt very good and definitely not worth the money. CC served me a tough cold steak. The Keg I find really consistent and generous and they are great with kids

Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?

When I ordered the chicken at the Stockyards, it was inedibly overseasoned with about a pound of black pepper. My son took one bite and couldn't eat another. I managed to get a piece down but couldn't eat another (and I'm a f**king pig). I brought it home for my wife and she wouldn't eat more than a bite.
I've been dying to try some from Harlem. Currently, my fave FC is from Chick N Joy

Best burrito in the city...

I have to say that I really don't like all the downtown burrito joints I've eaten at. Mission, Boyz, Big Fat, Mucho. I think they're all pretty bad and feel I can make a tastier one at home. I unfortunately compare burritos to some of the amazing ones I've had in SF and Chicago, which I understand isn't fair. My most recent North American favourite was Santa Fe Burritos in Philadelphia. But I finally found a place in Toronto that makes a good burrito. Burro Burritos.
I had a mix of their two chicken burritos today. My only regret was getting the large one and stupidly ordering mine with lettuce. I didn't see the ubiquitous double flattop press that ruins so many burritos in my opinion, so I got lettuce. They ended up putting it in a convection oven.
The chicken tinga was nice. Good amount of heat. Great guacamole. Nice spice to the salsa. Tasty refried pintos. I am considering going back tomorrow for their steak burrito

Just ordered a dozen glory hole doughnuts

So my coworker popped into Thor and brought me a couple different kinds of GHDs. She got the PB&J and the apple pie, then another coworker brought in 3 more of them including maple bacon, chicken and waffles and another PBJ. Overall, solid dough, but not mindblowing. Yes, they're large and I almost guarantee you'll get a stomach ache if you eat too much. My impressions were:
PBJ, unlike the one I loved at the Doughnut Plant, this one is a traditional filled donut. The problem with that is that it was STUFFED with grape jelly, terribly sweet jelly. It was too much, but the dough was nice
Apple pie, the best out of the ones I tried. Not too sweet and super tasty.
C&W, the waffle part was okay but I didn't like the chicken. As just a glazed donut, it was pretty good
Maple bacon, again a tasty glazed donut but I could barely taste any maple or bacon.

I'm eager to try the others that looked good like the puddin' and the lemon meringue.

Just ordered a dozen glory hole doughnuts

$51 delivered to the east end. $46 if I picked them up

Just ordered a dozen glory hole doughnuts

I was emailing with Ashley, but decided that $51 was just too much for a dozen donuts. I will hopefully be able to walk over to Thor tomorrow to try one out

The Construction Site - Grilled Cheese

There was a place in Kensington Market that did GCs only too. I predict the same fate for this place too. I don't think a restaurant can make it selling overpriced grilled cheese sandwiches. I wouldn't try it out, mostly because I have a fairly large ego when it comes to making slammin' grilled cheese sammies

The best Schnitzel

I've been to Europe. When I was there, all the food was single note. The schnitzel was bland and greasy. I won't go back. My fave schnitz after years of tryIng diff places is still the Albatros Pub on Lakeshore

I just don't get the Burger's Priest deification

Zagat review aside, they make a decent burger and fries. It's not that special. They don't elevate the burger. But they make a burger the way EVERY PLACE that sells burgers should. I'd rather hit Goody's

Lithuanian Cepelinai

I have actually never been but my brother in law goes frequently on Sundays and he doesn't drink

Lithuanian Cepelinai

I think you can find them at the Lithuanian House on Sundays

ISO Valentina Hot Sauce

I just got a bottle at the No Frills at Pape & Gerrard

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

I finally made it to this place last week while I was on staycation. Word to the wise, don't walk in at 1:30PM. That's the end of their lunch rush, it took 35 minutes between sitting down to getting our food. No blame, we fully understood the folly of our ways and our server was very busy and very apologetic. I forgot that this place's specialty was burgers, so my wife and I split a Goody burger (with onion rings instead of fries and strip bacon instead of peameal) and a pulled pork burrito.
The burrito, though that wouldn't be a combination I would generally eat, was very good. Full of good stuff, with very tasty pulled pork. On the side, their 'frite-like' fries, were very good too. I don't know if they're frozen or handcut, but they were really great, seeming like they were twice-fried.
The burger deserves its own paragraph. Like others have reported, the Goody burger is a 8 oz. fresh ground daily sirloin patty topped with jalapeno havarti, pickled jalapenos, caramelized onions, mushrooms, tomato and lettuce. It's a big, messy burger but manageable, unlike some of their other burgers I saw. This burger is the best I've had. And like most of you, I imagine, I've had a bunch. The meat is delicious, seasoned but not overseasoned like meatloaf. The bun was very nice too.
Hopefully they'll find it worth their while to open on weekends more regularly. I'll be there almost every Saturday if they do

Best Doughnuts in Toronto

My son and I often 'donut hunt', we seek out places that make donuts (that aren't crappy coffee shops) to see who makes the best. So far, Epi Breads are the clear winners. They're donuts are filled, either with pastry cream or raspberry filling. They're pretty awesome.
That being said, and I apologize for talking about another city's food, but I agree with the other. If there was a place like the Doughnut Plant on the Lower East Side in Toronto, they would sell a thousand donuts a day. I fricking love that place. Last trip to NYC, my wife and I ate 5 of them before hoping on the place back home.

Looking for an Allergy Friendly restaurant in Distillery District

As the dad of a young son with severe allergies to nuts and seeds, this is a constant concern when we eat out as a family. Unfortunately, we deal with a lot of ignorance around this ("There's just a FEW seeds on the bread") but have found that the best bets for dealing with food allergies is sticking with corporate restaurants. They know every single ingredient in each dish and they don't stray from recipe. The Keg was simply awesome when we went there for a family dinner a while back. They brought a binder with each recipe to our table to help us choose something for our son

Where to get grilled wings in TO?

Just finished off a large bag of pit wings from La Nova in Buffalo. In terms of non-Buffalo or deep fried wings, they're pretty awesome. But I wonder who does grilled wings in the city

BBQ shack on the side of I81 or I476

Last year, I made a trip to visit friends in Philadelphia. We were on the 81 and then the 476 getting there. Somewhere between probably Tioga, NY and Allentown, PA, wWe passed by a little shack on the side of the highway with smoke just pouring out of it. It was a BBQ shack, possibly with an Italian name. I didn't write the name of the place or where it was down and now, as I'm about to embark on the same trip, I don't want to pass it by.
I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know this place?

Dinner suggestions for Cobourg ?

I ate at Zest in PH. It was pretty tasty

Is anyone eating steak at the Tulip on Queen?

I like the Tulip because I know what I'm getting. it's not fine dining but it's good food, large portions and a decent price. I have eaten several steaks there and enjoyed every one. I always get the small sirloin. I recently brought a foodie friend who has eaten at every steakhouse in the city and he agreed that the sirloin was one of the best he's ever had.

Shawarmas in Toronto

Armenian Kitchen on Vic Park has the best I've had

Casa di Giorgios on Danforth mini review

I'm a fan and happily ordered from Queen St until they opened closer to me on Danforth. I like their pizza, but I can't agree with you that it's only a notch above PP. PP is fairly awful in comparison. As well, I doubt it's cost-effective for a restaurant to purchase dough when it's very cheap to produce in house.
I suggest their wings. Their pastas are fairly tasty too and they do a decent Chicken Parm.
I like Gerrard Pizza but I just can't abide by their prices. The last time I ordered from there, the pie was over $40 and I had to go back for a cup of sauce because there was far too little on it. I don't like oversauced pie but this was completely dry.
Tonight, the neighbours are coming over and we're ordering from CDG

What happened to Hollingers?

It's too bad it didn't work for them. I went in with the family one weeknight. They were absolutely dead. They had lots of amusements for my son and barely charged us for his burger and fries. They had good selections on the tap and the food was honest. But yes, they did suffer from the location's history. Great wings too.

z-teca gourmet burritos

Wow, that's a great deal. They have really good margs and I think they're usually $12

New fave brunch

Good question. My guess is that their regular menu doesn't change.

Reggie's Old-Fashioned Sandwiches, new place Beside Craft Burger on King

Aside from the usual (banquet burger, club sandwich) Their chopped steak was very good. Massive portion and perhaps just a bit TOO smothered in homemade gravy.

New fave brunch

Went to Mocha Mocha last weekend for brunch and found the breakfast I will now crave. AND IT DOESN'T EVEN CONTAIN ANY MEAT!!! The Fiesta Platter was amazing.
Scrambled eggs (super fluffy), half a sliced avocado, refried beans, grilled tortillas, 'spicy' tomato sauce (not spicy at all, but still very tasty) and a small mound of salad on top. It was so fresh and their vinaigrette is fantastic. Can't wait to go back, despite it coming to $15 with a cappuccino.

2009 closings

Reading that Solfrino closed was saddening. Hell, without reading it here, I probably would've headed over there one day soon to get a big cup of disappointment.
Not that I want to drag out the dead, but perhaps in this unfortunate climate, we can keep a list of establishments that have fallen this year to avoid in-person, time-wasting disappointments.

Lapse of reason

Went to Mr. Greenjeans in the Eaton Centre yesterday with the family. I don't know what else I was expecting, but it was among the worst meal I've been served. It was as inspired as a Hannah Montana album. My burger was overcooked and the bun was stale. My wife's salad seemed like a full pound of romaine with 6 black beans on it. Plus she had to ask several times for a refill of water that never arrived. Aside from the overpriced milkshake and the buffalo chips, it was easily the worst meal I've seen in a restaurant. All for the low cost of $60 for two adults and one 3.5 year old.
Again, I don't know what prompted going there nor do I know what else I should've expected. Even Chowhounds slip sometimes.
