best Jersey Shore souvenir

Hi all!
I'm going abroad in a couple of weeks and I need to bring some souvenirs that will best represent the Jersey Shore. I was thinking maybe salt water taffy? What's the best place to find it? I thought about pork roll, but I don't think it'd be wise to try to bring it overseas! Any other recommendations + where I could find them? Thanks!

snowskin mooncake

The Mid-Autumn Festival is upon us! Are there any bakeries that sell individual snowskin mooncakes? Methinks 'twould not be a good idea to have a box of these babies lying around!

ISO Banh Bia

Hi all! I'm searching for banh bia, which is a Vietnamese pastry composed of flaky layers surrounding mung bean paste, durian or both. It's very similar to the Taiwanese mung bean pastry, lu dou tu (綠豆凸) I think I've seen some banh bia sitting on the counter at Paris Sandwich in Manhattan, but I'm hoping to find a bakery that sells fresh ones. Here's what they generally look like: http://lilynguyen2007.blogspot.com/20...
Thanks!

Yes, they still serve a small selection of Taiwanese snacks (8 treasure rice, shumai, dong quai soup, etc.). And there's usually someone behind the Taiwanese table to take your order for things like lu rou fan (stewed pork over rice) and intestine soup. I can't comment on the latter, but the former was ok.

shanghai bun, matawan nj // gross ANY decent dumpling places in Central Jersey?

I hadn't been to Shanghai Bun in over a year and from the recent reports on here, I thought it was about time to check out their improvements myself. I heard that the original SB in Flushing had closed because their owners moved down here to take over. I've been to the original SB and I recognized the same items on the now expanded menu. Their xiao long bao are just as great as I remember them. We also got an order of the beef sandwich, Shanghai wonton soup, and pork chop over rice. (No room for their famous noodles this time!) We were very pleased with everything we ordered. I'm already planning another trip to check out their weekend breakfast/brunch offerings!

Does anyone have a copy of their new breakfast menu? It sounds really intriguing, especially since this seems to be the only place in the area that offers something like this!

best handmade soba!

Hey all!
I'm planning a trip up to NYC for my birthday coming up and I am just dying for an awesome bowl of handmade soba; one with a good deal of bite/chew to it. I recently came back from Tokyo and I've been jonesin' for soba ever since. I've narrowed it down to:

Matsugen (I've read so much about their expensive buckwheat grinder)
Soba Totto
Sakuragana
Soba-ya
Sobakoh

Hm my list isn't very narrow, is it? Agghh my head is spinning from all the reviews I've been reading for these places! So, my dear Ch'ers, my fate rests in your hands! Thanks!

I believe the old name of this place was New World Buffet. They may have changed owners since then.

satsumaimo truck

Hi everyone,
I'll be visiting Tokyo this November and I wanted to know if the satsumaimo (sweet potato) trucks still exist? I've read so much about them and I would love to be able to see/hear/taste it at least once. I assume if they are still around, you'd be more likely to find them in residential areas? Thanks!

Atlantic City Boardwalk?

I'll be heading down to Atlantic City in a few weeks for a concert. Anyone have any suggestions for something cheap and casual before the show?

Korean BBQ - Charcoal grills

Most Korean BBQ places nowadays use gas as opposed to charcoal. I've only tried the gas method at Woo Jeon several years ago. I imagine meat grilling over charcoal will be much more flavorful. Where can I find it, specifically in Middlesex county? (Maru, Keum Ho Jung, Chung Sol Bat, Edison Noodle House, Kimchi Hana, etc.)

new Hmart in Edison?

I came upon this little ad on the Hmart website. Unfortunately, I cannot read Korean! It looks like there's going to be a new Hmart opening in Edison on Lincoln Highway. I think it says 1745 Lincoln Highway as the possible new address. Has anyone heard anything regarding this?

Hmart event

I just saw this flyer for the Hmart in Ridgefield but sadly I cannot read Korean. It seems there is some special event this weekend. Has anyone been there in the past few days? Or can anyone translate this? I never see any "special events" listed for the Hmart in Ridgefield so I'm very interested this time.

Hunan House in Middletown

I just drove by here today and it seems it has turned into a new restaurant named Bando. There was an ad for it in the Chinese newspaper promoting their xiao long bao (soup buns) and taiwanese style food. If anyone stops by here, please let us know your experience!

Oops I guess this was already discussed!

Taiwanese in North Brunswick

I just saw an ad in a Chinese newspaper for a Taiwanese restaurant located in North Brunswick. I believe it's simply called East Chinese Restaurant. Has anyone been there? Is the food authentic Chinese/Taiwanese? I'm very interested in visiting the place since I don't know of many Taiwanese places in these parts.

Mitsuwa sweet potato lady

Every year when the weather starts to get cooler, a nice lady will start selling grilled yellow and purple sweet potatoes at Mitsuwa, usually just outside the bookstore. Although it is not yet officially fall, the weather has certainly been chillier these past few days. Have the sweet potatoes appeared for this season?

Korean Chuseok Festival

It's going to be held at Flushing Meadows Park: http://queens.about.com/b/2007/10/09/...

Hmm there seems to be a discrepancy as to when it's being held. The above link says Sunday September 21, but http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things... which is probably more reliable says Saturday September 20.

Best Moon Cakes in GTA ? It's that time of year again...

Are there any suggestions as to where I can find the "snowy skin" mooncakes? I'm going to be visiting Toronto from New Jersey (which imo is a culinary wasteland) and I would love to try it since I can't seem to find it anywhere near here!

izakaya recommendations

I'm going to up in Toronto next week and I would like to experience some real authentic izakaya-style food. It seems Ematei is a favorite on these boards. Do they have a large selection of skewered things? Is it offered at lunch as well? How are the prices? Thanks!

I was thinking more along the lines of northern chinese style noodles. It seems that Sun's Kitchen is quite popular for their noodles (and presentation!)

best handmade noodle?

I am very picky when it comes to noodles. It's gotta be handmade! I especially love the thick, uneven types. No skinny, spaghetti-like strands for me. What are your recommendations for the best handmade noodle?

I'm going to be visiting Toronto next week and I'm definitely going to explore Chinatown while I'm there. Are there any good place that serve the classic Northern style Chinese breakfast of sesame pancakes/shaobing, fan tuan, soymilk, beef rolls, etc?

shaobing/sesame pancake in Chinatown?

My heart broke when I found out that the Dumpling House on 925 Race St. had been replaced. I loved their sesame pancake! I haven't been to Philly's Chinatown since last December but I will be making a trip there at the end of this week. Does anyone know where else I could find my beloved shaobing/sesame pancakes there?

Authentic Chinese - Dover, NH?

I'm going to be visiting my brother up in NH this weekend and I wanted to go to an authentic Chinese restaurant (ie, no general tso!) with him since this would be a good opportunity to go outside his usual burger and fries joints. Any recommendations in the Dover area?

Ridgefield H Mart

Hi all!
I'm planning a trip to the super awesome H Mart up in Ridgefield tomorrow afternoon. I've read in some places that they often give out samples of stuff currently on sale. Does anyone know if they only do that on the weekends or will I hit the jackpot tomorrow? Thanks!
