Grand Central Oyster Bar just started doing a happy hour that will supposedly last through 2013. $1.25 oysters, $4 beers |

I think Geido (Flatbush Ave. near 7th Ave.) would be an excellent candidate for this. Do you and your mom like Japanese food? |

Ultimate Burgers and Dogs- A treasure in the old Chicory space It looks like this place is done. I walked by yesterday and the place was emptied out, with an AT&T bill stuck between the door knob and frame. Sad to see it go. I really liked the food. But it takes more than that to survive in such an out-of-the-way location in the neighborhood. Prediction: In the spirit of Brucie and Karloff, another communal-table place will open here with a passionate small-scale chef. Just like Chicory was in the old days. ----- |

I caught a little bit of the soft opening at Karloff on Court Street last night. Perhaps out of fear for the curse on the location, or the shaky economy, they've taken the "diversify" mantra to heart. They've got take-out pastries and ice cream, a serious coffee bar, and a delicious-looking menu of Eastern European comfort food. Of particular interest to me are the coffee options. They include grind-to-order pour-overs and the neighborhood's first siphon brewers!!! They have a beautiful communal table near the entrance, and smaller seating options towards the back. I'm looking forward to trying the food. Anyone else peek in last night? ----- |

downtown brooklyn lunchtime burger round-up Assuming they're still in business, I can't recommend Ultimate Burgers and Dogs enough! They're on Degraw between Court and Clinton. I'll warn you now, though -- opinion in the blogosphere/chowsphere is quite divided. They don't ask what you want on it and the bun is an untoasted potato roll. It's a perfectly seasoned, remarkably tasty, slightly greasy burger. Perfect as far as I'm concerned, but YMMV. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/661965 Word is the place in the old Patois spot -- JB's Burger -- is "not even trying." ----- JB's Burger |

Book Club-Friendly Brunch Spot in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens Sounds like a tough assignment. Where did you end up going? How did it work out? |

Re: adding pizza to the menu. I remember calling them a few years ago when the take-out menu I had listed pizza. I started placing my order for one of them when she interrupted me and said, "If we didn't have pizza, what would want?" Classic! |

I think you're talking about The Hideout. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/03/fashion/03boite.html |

Sunday Brunch in Boerum/Carroll/Cobble/Atlantic area? The garden at Apartment 138 always impresses. The food doesn't rise above standard brunch fare, though. |

Then I guess parking won't be a problem after 7. :) |

Just wanted to "big up" Tomato & Basil in Brooklyn, on 4th Ave. near Union St. His thin, square slice with fresh mozzarealla, plum tomatoes, and fresh basil is devine! |
